Motorsport Games' BTCC Title Might Be Delayed, President Stephen Hood Leaves

New BTCC Game Might Not Release in 2022.jpg
Following in the footsteps of the classic TOCA games, the BTCC was supposed to make a comeback to the sim racing stage with its own game in 2022: Announced in the summer of 2020, many touring car fans are looking forward to the title - however, it looks like its release might get pushed back.

As Traxion, a part of developer Motorsport Games, has learned, the new BTCC game's schedule is now listed as "to be determined" instead of a 2022 release. This became apparent in a call of Motorsport Games, outlining the plans for future titles - games like the brand-new IndyCar and WEC games announced earlier (and scheduled for release in 2023) are still listed, while the BTCC game has been demoted to merely a footnote.

After the release of NASCAR 21: Ignition that was plagued by bugs, this may hint at a "get-it-right" approach regarding the BTCC game - another game release like the NASCAR one would not have looked great for Motorsport Games, which is likely what the developer is trying to avoid. Even if the BTCC game has been pushed back indefinitely, the developer still holds the license until 2027 - more than enough time to create a worthy successor in spirit to the old TOCA games.

President Hood Leaves Motorsport Games

However, this is not all. According to Traxion, Motorsport Games President Stephen Hood is no longer with the company. A change in the bio of his Twitter profile seems to confirm this. However, no word is out on the reasons of Hood's departure.

Update: Stephen Hood left the company already on January 21, 2022 after his position was eliminated. CEO Dmitry Kozko will assume all responsibilities of overseeing Motorsport Games Development Studio, the PDF on their corporate website states.

The last time the BTCC had an exclusive, standalone game was in 1998 when TOCA 2 Touring Cars (or Touring Car Challenge in the US) was released. It then evolved into the Race Driver series, which featured many more different classes, and eventually laid the cornerstone for the current GRID series.

What do you think about the game possibly being delayed? How much are you looking forward to a dedicated BTCC game for the first time in more than 20 years? Let us know in the comments!

Having checked the BTCC licence runs from May 2020 to 31st December 2026.

BTCC licence cost was $891,999 with $100,000 due 5th June 2020.
The balance of $791,999 is due May 29th 2022 ( or 60 days after launch of game - whichever is earlier :) ). This has been included on the non-current liabilities on the balance sheet.
Wow. Is this from their financial statements?

My feeling is: not much. BTCC is a UK-only market, Indycar is still a marginal championship in the USA, sadly, and the WEC is not that popular, except for Le Mans. The only really expensive license is F1. Even NASCAR is probably not that expensive.

Best-case scenario: Motorsport game goes belly up and these licenses are available again to serious developpers.
I think those licenses stand better chances if they become DLCs of existing sims than a dedicated product which will inevitably have high costs and much smaller audience.

BTCC maybe big in UK Motorsport along with some global interest from "Motorsport" fans but I'm not sure how far something being the "Official BTCC Game" carries it.
Its exactly the same as Nascar games, they are a US based series so how popular are they worldwide?

If anything BTCC might be more popular due to racing with cars that are closer to the actual cars on the road....and of course they can play on the nostalgia factor if they add 90s super tourers into the game as a bonus

That to me is the most worrying thing about this.

Kartkraft is also a nice game from a promising developer.

I recently bought Ignition with a large discount, just to verify how bad it is, and it is really amazing how such a product can be released. What is even worse is that they are not pumping out weekly patches to fix the game.

It basically feels like abandonware.

That’s for the inaugural product that should establish the reputation of the publisher.

Looking back it is (much) worse than the original NASCAR Heat release, which was pretty bad, and makes most other NASCAR attempts look like polished gems.

I feel bad for the employees, developing houses, investors and even license holders like NASCAR.

Scandalous does not adequately describe it.

Speaking as a Canadian, I can tell you nobody here even knows that the BTCC exists. I only heard of it because I am interested in sim racing and I read "Autosport" once in a while.

It is. Comes from their financial US Securities and Exchange Commission Form 10-K reports.
For 2020 ( dated March 24 2021 ) and for 2021 ( dated March 30 2022)
So in theory in seven weeks time MSG must pay TOCA ( for BTCC ) that second payment.

I haven't read both reports fully but it seems they also have to pay the ACO / WEC some not inconsiderable sums - unfortunately a lot of these reports seem to try to obfuscate the true meaning.
Can we have "plain english" please?

A line regarding "Risks" in 2020 report
If we do not provide high-quality products, our business may be negatively impacted
And 2021
We have incurred significant losses since our inception, and we expect to continue to incur losses for the foreseeable future. Accordingly, our
financial condition raises substantial doubt regarding our ability to continue as a going concern.

AND
We will require additional capital to meet our financial obligations, and this capital might not be available on acceptable terms or at all

weren't there also negotiations between Slightly Mad Studios and MSG?
I think Ian Bell was a lucky guy or simply tougher then them when the deal was canceled

Yes I seem to remember that, then Codemasters (pre EA) stepped in and made a better offer.
It’s a bit worrying that our small niche has been the target of financial predatory moves.

When I first heard about MSG, I was sceptical. How did a company founded in 2018 somehow get licenses for Le Mans, Indycar, NASCAR and BTCC. Given the failure of the recent NASCAR title and now this, it seems the whole thing has been smoke and mirrors, and that's really disappointing given I'm sure those series will be reticent to collaborate with other developers in the future.

In truth, a BTCC game would be fun but if it does happen, will probably end up being an expansion for Rfactor2 or RaceRoom. I'm not sure people will shell out full price otherwise.

I was just last week thinking about what is happening around this game, and same time got a feeling that its not going so well. And BOOM! What a surprize...

I find it interesting that people expect us to bring rumors as news without having any confirmation from the company itself. Is that the kind of journalism you like to see?

Now Traxion/MSGM confirmed it themselves and I have reached out to BTCC and Stephen Hood today for a comment so we can do a follow-up newsarticle if needed.
I mostly agree with you, Bram. Rumors and pure speculation are not "news".

But I also somewhat disagree. "Parroting" or repeating of what industry actors say (in interviews or news releases) is not the only kind of journalism I would want to see on RaceDepartment – that is usually of little interest to me.

Thinking constructively about reporting news about Motorsport Games, I'm struck by three concrete things RD could have reported on: MSG's concerning, seemingly misleading (if not dishonest) earnings calls to investors, bleak-looking financial reports, and the leaving-out of the BTCC game on a recent roadmap (suggesting it is in danger). You could have just described and reported on these in and of themselves, free of speculation or exaggeration (even if others in the community often do speculate). Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe there were news items about these events here on RD.

This is my bet.. BTCC becoming a (paid, of course) DLC to RF2

[edit] I saw Austin's video.. forget it.. they must already lost the license

As I said in an earlier post Alan Gow is extremely precious where the BTCC is concerned, probably saw the nascar debacle and had second thoughts.
Although having said that he allowed Codies to hang on to it for years and make almost no use of it, apart from preventing anyone else doing so.
