Do you race in VR?

Sim racing is a perfect gaming format to experience with VR, but some in the sim community are very pro-VR while others are holding back. Have your say in the comments below on whether VR is for you, and why.

A good Virtual Reality sim racing experience is hard to beat, but technical limitations and limited developer support has slowed the growth of VR. So, we want to hear from you. Is VR worth having for sim racers in 2021?

While the global stats on its use on Steam puts the percentage of VR in the single digits, most sim racing polls put the percentage of users who at least own a headset in the 25-35% range. Even with this high level of VR owners, many high-profile racing franchises such as F1 and WRC have yet to implement official VR support. Other sim titles like Assetto Corsa, rFactor 2 and RaceRoom have supported VR for years, and are enjoyed by thousands of sim racers around the world.

For many in the community, VR is the only way to sim race. This crowd even has a slogan: “No VR, No Buy”. Undoubtedly, there aren’t any more immersive or exciting ways to experience sim racing visually than to virtually control the head of the driver. The first sim racing experience in VR is something most people don’t quickly forget. Sitting virtually in cars most of us will never get to drive in real life at a track most of us will never get to experience is undeniably cool.

Contrast the above list of pros with some known shortcomings of VR, and you end up with a divided set of opinions. Among those who have tried VR sim racing and moved on, two of the common complaints are that the video appears grainy and the frame rate is too low. Both issues can be mitigated with higher end hardware, but the cost of such hardware is prohibitive to many. A byproduct of a lower framerate in VR is often motion sickness. Motion sickness can occur in VR at any frame rate, but it’s more common with sub-90 FPS experiences, and makes Virtual Reality impossible for some.

It’s also possible that we’re only in the infancy of VR, and the next generation will improve the visually quality and frame rate even on affordable GPUs and HMDs. Other than flight simulators, no gaming format takes advantage of a VR view quite like racing simulators. If the demand for VR continues from racing gamers, the developers will hopefully look to make support more commonplace in future titles and improve the experience in kind.

So, we want to hear from you. Do you use VR? What keeps you coming back or keeps you away from VR, and what do you think the future will hold for VR sim racing?

Hey man! Good news for you, all VR headsets allow you to see in relief, 3D, depth, whatever term you want, each screen (therefore the two screens of the helmet) reproduce a slightly different image, as in real vision, which allows the vision in depth, as in real life and which also means that myopic people like me have to put on their glasses to use the helmet when I can see very well over a meter / yard.
Test VR for real before you say you don't like it.
Have a nice day.

Can't afford VR, so I only use SmoothTrack headtracking for now.. and it's really game changing! I can't drive without it anymore, it's just so good, being able to look around you, and it gives more speed sense! Just awesome!

I use TrackIR instead of my VR for racing as well, even with triples its worthwhile. you only really do very slight head movement into apex corners anyway and for me this really adds to the immersion without all the drawbacks of VR, its also indispensable for MSFS2020

On VR, sadly for me the question is to puke or not to puke:sick:
I can ride on a boat just fine, but sitting in the back of a coach, or keeping my head down when riding in a car, even playing literally anything with a low field of view, let allone watching a youtube video with some crazy camera shaking, I'll get really bad nausea within a couple of minutes:redface:
Damn, I'm just not compatible with modern day tech...

Some prefer experience above visuals. I just dont want to go back 20 years in graphics to have a 3D experience. And with the current minig scalpers and riddiculous high gpu prices, VR will die a slow death.
Not to be confrontational but I think the people that say 'VR will die' lack foresight and just don't understand where it's going. VR and AR will blend to become an extension of reality.

I've been reading this site for many years and have noticed that a lot of your posts are just nonsense lol.

VR though lacking in a lot of areas such as resolution, washed-out colors, lack of full clarity, etc.. is still incredible.
There is nothing like being able to turn your head and look at an opponent while blasting up the Kemmel Straight in a car.
It is a more natural experience to sit in that 'space' and simply drive.
It is way more representative than any single or triple-screen experience.
Can't wait to get hardware to again support it.

hey, i'm the only one with motion sickness here?
love VR...unfortunately, short sessions or else i ll be in the edge of a nightmare
So, flat screen or vr have both some flaws and perks

If someone I knew had VR I would like to try it. But to invest in the equipment that seems to have plateaued along with some of the previous statements of motion sickness I'm quite happy with triple screens.

Exactly this, after getting used to VR there is no way possible to return to screens (even not 100 inch, on which I raced before or 3x 65 inch triples, it's not even comparable in terms of immersion).

But only with good VR glasses(SHARP image) en good/fast hardware(minimum 3080). I have the Reverb G2 + 3080 and for me it's the minimum setup to enjoy VR. With lower resolution headsets and lower framerates then 90fps stable I don't have the same type of immersion.

"The first sim racing experience in VR is something most people don’t quickly forget. Sitting virtually in cars most of us will never get to drive in real life at a track most of us will never get to experience is undeniably cool."

This was not the case for me, my first sim racing VR experience was with the first Rift. I was extremely pixelated and for that reason it was even unplayable for me. I was not so impressed at all to be honest. At that time I didn't want to change my "flat" setup for VR. But after the Reverb G2 was released; I switched and now I can never go back to regular screens.

Edit: No VR no buy! :D INDEED :D
Exactomundo. Nothing comes close to VR for simracing. The sense of depth, spacial awareness, the natural feel for the car movement, ...
Sometimes I have to pinch myself as I am fortunately to have a monster system (5800x/RTX3090/ReverbG2).
However, my sim of choice, rFactor 2, stretches my system to the max, so it's not without some compromises that I have to run it.
In any case, I did notice that AMS2 - which runs very well - feels a lot more natural in VR as it eliminates the odd camera bouncing that I never managed to tune in pancake mode. Pity that, for me, it does not please me wholly simulation wise.

VR racing is immersive and makes some cockpit views useable, like some GTO cars where you are sitting in the centre of the car. you cant use that view on a flat screen as you can`t see much at all. But in VR its a realistic and useable option.

the immersion of racing side by side and with someone and out braking them into a corner can`t be matched by single or triple screens,

I have a next generation on `VR yaw` on order , so the immersion will go up another notch

Two years with the HTC Vive have convinced me to race in vr when the sim allows it. Even with the low resolution of the original vive I have done several Iracing races and i'm as fast (or even faster) as i am when racing with a monitor. It does have drawbacks, mainly resolution (maybe with modern headsets its much better) and lack of awareness of your surroundings irl. Still, nothing beats looking to the side and seeing someone you are actualy racing.

And even without racing, in vr you can just relax and drive in Assetto Corsa if you want to, shutoko in vr is amazing, and any mountain road at night becomes magical.

Seriously, if you haven't tried it yet do it, VR is amazing and it gets better every day.
