Ford Italia Unveils the Monza W-Track for Assetto Corsa

Assetto Corsa Monza W Track.jpg
An initiative aimed to highlight the underrepresentation of women in motorsports is using Assetto Corsa to send a message.

The relevance of Assetto Corsa for PC seems endless. The latest to utilize the platform for a high-profile initiative is Ford Italia, who aim to bring light to the difficulty women may face when entering real and virtual motorsports.

To convey their message, the team behind this project has modified the Monza track in Assetto Corsa and changed the straightaway after the Ascari chicane to form the word "woman". The added complexity of this track section is meant to represent the added complexity of women entering a male-dominated sport.

The track was unveiled as part of a private tournament, with participants testing their skills at both the regular layout of Monza and this special layout. A link for downloading this special version could not be found at this time.

The timing of this project aligns with International Women's Day, and both share a goal of enhancing inclusiveness and gender equality.

If this is released to the public, which car would you use to drive it?

Like many males I very much welcome more women into our sports and as the nicheleading website we have historic data to actually proof that women are more and more getting involved into simracing.

Here is the current gender split of the total RaceDepartment audience.

Not too bad, as most woman I know, think that rich people driving around in circles to see who has the fastest car is quite lame.

I guarantee you if you had a carbon copy of george russell with equal skills but is female in contention of that mercedes seat at that time, Mercedes would have given the female version of george russell the seat instead. It is a massive PR opportunity and they would 100% take it. Such a caliber of female driver in F1 has just not appeared yet, but we'll see.
Definitely.

But no such carbon copy exists because we needed a lot of young children in go karts to come up with one George Russel. The probabilty of that happening to a girl is just way lower than a boy because boys outnumber girls in motorsports by like 1:200 (just an estimate).

And, no, that's not natural as another user commented. When we grow up all we see is women being interested in make up and men being interested in machines. That stuff has an impact on us whether we like it or not.

I think most of us are oblivious that in motorsports -like in many other economies and circles- favoritism, sponsoring/money, patronage and other factors decide who is going to go up or who will be overlooked (or actively not pushed forward). Most critical for sure in higher ranked open wheeler series, especially F1, I would believe.

I think we will only see if there is really a gender difference in the ability to be the best racer among all sexes, if this stops. Not that I think that it will come that far anytime soon...if ever.

I firmly believe however that women-only series are the wrong way to go, because you isolate women in their own series instead of incorporating them in the established series. I really loved how Sophia Florsch pointed that out and refused to partake in the W series.
In my head it is counterproductive to create alternate realities.

Why does it matter? Maybe because being full of white rich boys isnt exactly a great look.

When drivers no matter race, sex or background can make it to the top and sponsors aren’t scared to touch them. Or they aren’t used as sex icons. Or racial stereotypes aren’t used against them constantly by fans. Or when black drivers aren’t constantly racially abused.

funny how you complain about these things but your open statement is that something being "full of white rich boys" .. is "not a good look".

am I wrong? Look at their statements about BLM or any type of social issues. Or when loads of people went of social media because of racism and lando made it about himself. Or when drivers can get away with sexual assault.

ya getting rid of the "white dudes" will surely accomplish that.. good luck with your endeavour.
Never said get rid of white people. I’m saying when a black person makes a small mistake they aren’t called the N-Word. Or when a woman is sexually abused not only is “not all men” not banded around Or people don’t get jobs based on their name. Or that people aren’t homophobic.

I want a world where women feel safe on the streets. I want a world where there’s no hate crime and lastly no discrimination.

"Never said get rid of white people" you said a place with "white people" is not "a good look".. make up your mind.

and to fight these things your starting point is hating on white dudes.. nice

so what you are trying to say is that white rich boys are all for hate, sexual assaut, homophobia and calling people with slurs?

Being a female racer in todays motorsport is a huge advantage, its a marketing dream, the teams are desperate for female racers It would also really help the "we race as one" and be amazing for TV gettin a female audience. Anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded, easy example is Jamie Chadwick, i see articles daily about how she should be in F1, when the truth is she'd get destroyed, the only reason she's even mentioned is she's a female.

If someone truly wasn't racist or sexist or whatever-ist then they would simply hire the person best suited for the job (ie. best performing). It doesn't matter if they just so happen to be all black people or all white or all male or all female or all oriental or all slavic or all blonde haired or all over 5 feet tall or all with size 10 shoes or all with freckles or...whatever. You simply hire the best performer you can without paying attention to anything else...no "ifs", "ands', nor "buts". That is the absolute only truly pure way; anything other than that is in itself prejudice (or discrimination, sexist, racist, etc.).

If you don't hire a black person only because you already have too many black people, that's racist to black people. If you don't hire a white person only because you already have too many white people, that's racist to white people. If you don't hire a man only because you already have too many men, that's sexist/discrimination/prejudice to men. If you don't hire a woman only because you already have too many women, that's sexist/discrimination/prejudice to women. Etc. etc. to other things (religion, height, weight, hair colour, good/bad looks, nationality [not just skin colour], shoe size, breast size, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.).

eh, the good old "colorblind" stuff we were taught in the '80s and '90s before this generation of grifters raised to power with their bizarre ideas that a "free" society should result in a perfect split between colors, genders, cultures or whatever abritrary segregation they came up with last week in EVERY single community/job/circle/hobby/sport on the planet.. missing the whole point of "freedom".. which means to be free to be who you are and free to do what you want to do... and people, by definition, are different and aspire to different things.

In my karting days, there were a few girls driving. They were just as fast as the most of us.

Here is a list of female drivers of last 20 years with their race finish in F3 or in their series before f1 and the f1 role they got, or didn't. Only drivers are listed who did more than handful of races.

Sophia Flörsch - F3 22nd - no f1 role
Jamie Chadwick - British F3 8th - no f1 role
Tatiana Calderon - F3 27th - Alfa Romeo F1 development and test driver 2018-2020
Susie Wolff - 18th in DTM - Williams f1 development driver, drove in official F1 practice session
María de Villota - superleague 15th, 2 races - Marussia f1 test driver
Carmen Jordá - GP3 29th - F1 renault and lotus test driver, did not drive the car tho
I believe that Jamie Chadwick is still a Williams development driver. Not that Williams is making sure that she gets a F3 seat so she can really make progression, but at least they can mention that they support diversity on their website.

From the Netherlands there's Beitske Visser.

And I would like to have women to participate in my championships and singles events.
So anything we can do to encourage women to get involved would be welcomed.

But we cannot force them. As a father of two daughters and a son, it was clear to me from the cradle that their interests are different. It's a cliché, I know but my girls are more sociable and less competitive than my son. That was very evident in the computer games they liked to play. The girls played the Sim series where my son played FPS and racesgames. And while I played Battlefield with them, the girls didn't play that game alone. It was the social aspect of the collaborative mode that they liked, where my son liked the counter-to-each variants more.

I see fast car racing as a modern form of knight-era jousting, so I think it will always appeal to men more.

But I have to say that I don't think 14.6% is a bad score. I don't know how active they are, but it's interesting to find out why those women joined.

So maybe we should do more on the social aspect of our community to attract more women to our discussions and Discord chats. Or maybe a women-only event/championship, such as a virtual W-series.

I am certainly willing to organize such an event. Unfortunately I don't know any of the 14.6%.
