DiRT Rally and DiRT 4 Quietly Removed From All Online Storefronts

EA and Codemasters are on a roll. While announcing the demise of the Project CARS franchise, 2 of Codemaster's titles from the DiRT franchise have been taken down as well. From now on, you officially cannot buy both DiRT 4 as well as DiRT Rally anymore. Newer titles are not affected.

Publisher Electronic Arts seem to be restructuring its racing portfolio quite intensely. Yesterday saw the announcement of Project CARS, developed by Slightly Mad Studios being cancelled and the team reshuffled into other teams. Slightly Mad Studios is, or was, owned by Codemasters, developers of the DiRT franchise, GRID and the F1 Games and owned by EA.

It is unknown whether this restructuring of racing games under the EA umbrella has been sought after by EA itself or Codemasters. What is clear, however, is that major disruptions in the racing genre are currently happening.

If you still want to buy either of the 2 titles unlisted for PC, unfortunately, the only way would be by buying codes online. But if you do, be quick about it. DiRT 2 codes currently sell online for over 300€. So it can be expected that codes for DiRT 4 and DiRT Rally will increase in price too.

Or you can wait for the inevitable DiRT Rally 3.0 title that will be running with the WRC license at some point in the future, probably in 2023 or 2024. DiRT 6 is also expected to release no earlier than 2023.

But with no news on these new titles in the franchise, all we know is that currently, if you want to enter the DiRT scene, you need to do it via either the arcade racer DiRT 5 or the rally simulator DiRT Rally 2.0.

What do you think about this? Let us know in the comments down below!

Glad I purchased Dirt 4 and Dirt Rally 1 with all DLC for extremely cheap 6 or so months back. Having a fun time playing them in single player career. Playing Dirt 4 first then DR 1. I'm saving DR 2.0 for last since it's supposed to be the best, driving-wise, of the series.

Physical media always had a limitation of life based on its printing. Digital media's limitation depends entirely on copyrights and law.

Thank god i see a pirate ship on the portside! Those never sink!

Someone said it’s good to get rid of the old games, I tend to disagree. For my experience, I couldn’t justify spending lots of money on games when I first got into pc racing sims. So I got the older versions to see if I liked them. Eventually I saved enough money to get all the newer sims.
But I might not have ever spent the money had I not tried the older less expensive releases.
It’s my personal observation that ea is kinda like capital gains investors. Buy it cheap, milk it for all you can, then dump it. So even if it’s not an ea decision, I’m inclined to think they support it. I have pcars3 and dirt5. Both are junk I my opinion, and I’m not alone in that feeling. So instead of fixing them so that they are good and will sell better, just remove everything else so people have to buy the latest greatest most expensive.
It’s a shame really seems like so many developers are cheesing out for quick cash, and it’s happening across the board, not just racing sims.

Why do we not hear anything about a Dirt Rally 3.0 game? It's clear Dirt Rally 1 and 2 were successes in their respective genres...

They, codemasters, began working on it, but that was just before EA bought them out, and EA acquired the rights to the official WRC championships (the official WRC licence had been with Nacon, see recently released WRC generations by Nacon, which is the last release by Nacon before the rights move to EA)

So Codemasters is now under EA, as they were bought out by EA, and CM with the WRC licence in place will now be making the official WRC title for 2023 I expect…. Which may or may not use the code or some of the code that they were beginning to work on for DR3 possibly…

D4 was imo a little under appreciate, even if it is a little wonky, imo Codemasters were on the right track with their stage generator - what it was missing was more track ”tiles” and Rallies.

I Do not think We will have to wait long for the new EA/Codies WRC IP.

As far as I can remeber, Codies Signed the WRC Agreement, in late 2019, since than there was no new Rally Game released, accept the crappy DiRT 5.

I would definitly bet some money, that as soon as EA/Codies can officially show something, which, as far as I know, is 01.01.2023, they will give us an early release Date in 2023's Q1. Because they definitly work on this project since at least 2020.

May you remeber, the releases of last few F1 Games was 6 to 8 weeks after they annouced the Games. As far as I remeber.
Good points! I hope Codemasters releases their version of WRC sooner than later. Meanwhile, I am enjoying WRC Generations, especially with native telemetry support. I don't use VR, so lack of it is not a big deal for me. WCR Generations stage design and graphics are stunning on my G9 and 3080!

I think it's a good thing that old games are being removed from the market. I mean, selling a decade old game is kinda...greedy. Well, unless it's still being updated/expanded.
That being said,a better option would be to give them for free, for a certain amount of time, or a certain number of downloads. It's not like they would be losing money because nobody buys them now anyway.
I agree, they should pull the original Assetto Corsa from sale as well as it's older than both Dirt Rally and Dirt 4, and not being actively maintained.

It's well greedy of 505 Games and Kunos to keep that title on sale - imagine the disappointment new purchasers will have when they see the graphics are not quite up to date. What a waste of money.

As you say they should give it away for free.

EA are pushing out, like sitting on the toilet, WRC Generations, couldn’t get it to work at all and I only have a full motion sim rig. Get rid of the competition (Dirt Rally) and all you can buy is s#%^ Devs delete my comments on Steam after offering basically no help to get it working. Childish, like their coding abilities.

I don't think DiRT 4 had a physical release on PC though.
It depends on what you mean with "physical release". I bought DiRT 4 in the store back then and it came with 5 DVDs for the installation, but you obviously had to enter the attached Steam key before you could install it.

That's not really true. Codemasters aquired the WRC license themselves before they were bought out by EA.

I think only because the WRC License is with Kylotonn till the End of this year. As mentioned before. I think we will get lot of information from the 1st january in 2023 on...

Still play the Dirt Rally online challenges every day. Hope they won't be affected. Just bought the whole Dirt Rally 2 through some keyshop couple of weeks ago.

I don't like delisting of games. It may make sense from the point of view of the developer who wants to sell their new games. But as someone who can't afford a high end gaming PC I like being able to get games that get good fps on my machine.

And if people prefer older games over the new releases maybe the devs should ask themselve why that is the case.

That's sad - I actually always preferred DR1, it just has better tracks and soundtrack.
Soundtrack is the last position on my list in a racing/sim game.
As for me it can be removed completly from the want-to-have-in-a-rallygame-list.
Even in FH5 i disable the whole dumb music...engine sound is the proper music in my ears ;)
Some decent music (quiet) in a menu is ok but not during driving

I never liked those games. But I have to say that EA is looking silly, they probably have done this to force their clients to purchase the more modern titles that "casually" cost more. The reality is that probably there is people interested in those titles specifically, some others want to play it again for nostalgia, and few others don't have a computer strong enough to play the more modern titles.

It's better a small amount of money than no money at all, now that people is going to the bay store, a store where there is a never ending free giveaway promotion.

As you own the game you can download a backup with different version from 3rd party sites.

DR1 had PP, DR2 didnt, did you made a typo?
Huh? I said I only miss PP from DR1, that DR1 worked erratic in VR, but that DR2 is a great package, and only people needing PP would miss DR1.
