Round 2 of the 2023 Formula One season takes place in Saudi Arabia this weekend on the Jeddah Corniche circuit. Here are all the stories to look out for.

After a two-week trip across the Arabian desert, Formula One is paying Jeddah a visit in Saudi Arabia. This weekend is the Saudi Arabia F1 Grand Prix as the championship moves on to Round 2 of the season.

Compared to Bahrain, the Jeddah Corniche street circuit is a totally different beast. The fast-flowing nature of this high-speed venue is sure to produce a different pecking order to Bahrain. In fact, the tyre-shredding stop-start layout of Bahrain couldn't be further from the upcoming circuit if it tried.

The opening round of the season at Bahrain saw pre-season testing concerns become a reality as Red Bull proved this year will be a fight for second place. Elsewhere, a fantastic battle for the final step on the podium raged on throughout the race between Mercedes, Ferrari and Aston Martin.

Further down, an equally fraught competition for the lower point-scoring positions saw Alex Albon claim a point for Williams and Pierre Gasly climb from the back of the grid to the top-ten. The biggest surprise of the weekend was certainly the McLarens which suffered from major reliability issues all while showing little to no pace. It will be a difficult second race for them.

Top stories in F1 Jeddah

Whilst Aston Martin showed they could keep up with the top teams in Bahrain, Jeddah is a different kettle of fish. Whether or not the AMR-23 can maintain its pace on the much faster street circuit is an important aspect of this week's event. This track will be a good representation of many circuits on the 2023 calendar, so if the team in green can compete this weekend, we'll know they're in for a season-long fight.

As mentioned above, McLaren had a torrid event in Bahrain. Not only were they off the pace, both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri fell to reliability issues early on. Although the more experienced Brit continued to the chequered flag, he was forced to stop regularly to top up on pneumatic fluid. Meanwhile, a total electronic systems malfunction rendered Piastri's car immobile. The Papaya squad will be hoping they can show what they have in the second round, though with upgrades not expected before Baku, it will be a tricky first quarter of the season.

The biggest heartbreak in Bahrain was when Charles Leclerc once again came to a halt in his Ferrari F1 car. An engine issue forced his retirement from the race. But it gets worse. The Monegasque already has a 10-place grid penalty for using too many ECU parts this season. On the Sunday in Bahrain alone, the Ferrari squad used up their two allowed ECU components meaning every new parts from now will incur a grid drop. This early on in the season, Ferrari will be worried that this is a recurring issue. It will be interesting to see if either driver has the same problem in Jeddah this weekend.

Aside from the Aston-Mercedes-Ferrari battle, the best on-track action was as ever provided by the midfield. From eighth down, drivers sat in a line fighting for the final points paying positions. We saw in qualifying for Race 1 that the entire field was close, which makes predicting a line-up impossible. It will be an important aspect of the early stages of the weekend to work out which teams are likely to score points this time out as the field shuffles once more.

sorry, I was trying to isolate quoted material. (the dang website's editor kept going back to whatever color I had chosen for the quoted text even after I had changed back to black and typed another sentence or two. I had to go back repeatedly to recolor blue (or was it green?)to black...
I would have thought British Press would have pushed for revoking his Karting license and thereby negating all his career F1 points! :)
I apologise for the British Red Top gutter press, it's not the view of most people in the UK

Taken from the Mirror website
Verstappen was the last of the trio to reach the cool down room after giving his trackside interview at the end of the race. Perez and Alonso were stood chatting in Spanish when the Dutchman walked in, placed his helmet in Alonso's seat and quickly plopped in the chair reserved for the race winner Perez.
1 Lion, 2 leopards. If it didn't 'mean' anything, no one would have taken a photo, no one would have mentioned it. When Apex Predators are in proximity of each other, staking a claim to another's territory is paramount. Max KNOWS what he his.
THIS is why some folks think Daniel will be back in the saddle before the season is over. (notice how I'm now arguing on the other side of the issue? :> )

People see what they want to see. To fit a narrative I guess?

But does Perez seriously think he can win the championship?
Did Rosberg?
These folks are different from me and you, they're single minded and have self belief beyond that which most of us can imagine, they're not really there for the money, they NEED to win and prove to the world that they're the best.
I personally think that someone that's that driven has something wrong with their head.

I think Perez STATUS in team is nowhere near Rosberg used to be in Merc
so, yeah, I agree... unless something happened that prevent Max from winning the title I think Perez title hope are not on very solid ground

I'm pretty disgusted by the comments on social media about Jos not congratulating Checo. Based on one picture which was a snap shot of a millisecond. A few seconds later Jos shook Checo hand.....yet the bile and hatred towards the Verstappen's is seriously beyond anything I read about Lewis.....and I'd imagine 90% of the bile is from Lewis fans and Merc berks. We've had bitter driver rivalries in the past but some of the crap I'm reading is beyond the pale. It's almost impossible to have a decent sane F1 chat on social media.

The Fans are fine... it's the mass of haters and fanbois that are the problem, finding one of those Fans is difficult these days... I remember on Yahoo F1 forums were filled with hate for Seb, and back again for Lewis, I've not used Yahoo for a decade.

Ummm, nope. None of that. I happen to be a relative of one of 'those'. He is a straight up very much forward guy with a strong will and mind. However, he does and is involved in a lot of other things, not racing related and he spends a lot of energy to keep it out of the spotlight otherwise it gets fakebooked, tiktaked or whatever and then people like some around here start/repeat the wildest things.

Cheers.

So, not an F1 world Champion then, no disrespect, but as far as I see only those married to it get that far... and Kimi of course, but Fernando and Lewis gave him that one

That what I mean, the decent fans trying to chat are drowned out by the complete halfwitted feckwits all the time. Doesn't help that most of them think an LSD is a drug. ;) I do occasionally have some excellent chats, but it's rare.........I need a slap though to get off farcebook, on the plus side I haven't succumbed to twatter, instaknob, tik twat and snaptwat. ;)

Some of this is also fueled by the motorsports press, who are incentivized to have the most sinister interpretation of each and every incident. If they ran with a picture of Jos congratulating Checo then where's the story? How do they get the clicks or the mentions? But if they find the one 5 second clip where Jos looks disinterested in celebrating Checo's win; then they can run with the Verstappens only care about themselves narrative. Max sitting in Checo's seat by mistake doesn't get anyone to read an article. Max sitting in Checo's seat to disrespect him does.

That's not to say it's the press' fault alone, the fans, fan boys, haters, us here all buy into it and contribute to it as well.

No offense taken...he retired last year...so I'd say you're further away from your point than you were before...

Cheers.

Perhaps the brush I used was too broad (a mistake often made in getting a point across) the elder statesman did not always seem to be the well loved, well rounded and caring one that walked away.
If he's Canadian though, nice as he was... he never really seemed to find the edge to be there.

LOL. I agree on the brush part. That is one the greater challenges these days. Behind the wall of anonymity, I have to put the brakes on my fingers to make sure my brain is OK with the outcome. Success is not always guaranteed though.

Not Canadian, he is more one of the Germanic kind....

No, I didn't know the exact formula where it carries over 3 years. Regardless, I responding to the point that the 'cheating' was done last year. It wasn't, it was 2021.
Due, I'll tell you how **** works. You invest in 2021 for a project to be produced in 2022. Hence, you cheated in 2022.
If you know how to make payments of millions during the span of 2 milliseconds with money spontaneously created out of farts, please inform me.

Can we please move on from 2021? I know the current season is boring but we dont need to kill that boredom with toxic discussions

You need to do your research, if you can find out the exact breach that wasn't a breach on the preliminary budget... the one that became a breach many months later when the interpretation changed, and how a certain 'other' team boss claimed there was a breach long before the the release date I'd like to know, because that right there is interesting that another team gets these results from the FIA before it's made public, inside information... that is a breach of trust as far as I see.
