Race against DLC you don't own in rFactor 2

GT3-Update-6.png
In a Facebook announcement today, Studio 397 announced a slight delay for their Q1 build. While the GT3's will get their promised updated the 7th of February, the game-build will be delayed two weeks until the 21st, as the Studio wants to polish the new feature.

One of the issues many players have had with rFactor 2, is the fact that you need to own all content that is present on the server. If you want to race a DPi-car in a RaceDepartment Club Race against LMP2's and GTE's, you would have to buy all cars. If you the next week want to race a Ferrari GT3 in a GT3 event, you would have to buy the 11 other GT3 cars as well. This is finally going to change in rFactor 2.

As the rFactor 2 announcement says:
So, let’s tell you one of the big reasons why we want to delay… this Friday, we will update our Release Candidate with a new feature… the ability to race online against content you don’t own! Exciting as this is, we just need more time to polish it all up, and a few other bits, so we hope you don’t mind a little delay – I’m sure you will think it was worth the wait!

There is no doubt that this is a feature that have been requested for a long time, and it's taken Studio 397 quite a time to untangle the old rF2 code and being able to make these changes. While it doesn't state with clarity how this will work, it is an important step forward.
It will also make life easier for server hosts, as there is less of a need to focus on what kind of DLC is being used.

It will come for the Release Candidate already this Friday, but with all beta-builds, they may contain bugs. Stable release is planned for the 21st of February.

I've been a motorsport-fan for as long as I can remember. Initially a rallycross-maniac, but got into F1 around the time I started school. Got my first sim when I was 7, but didn't start properly until I got a wheel when I was 12. Been a staff at RaceDepartment since 2012. Mainly the dirty-guy who does rally-stuff here. But also management-titles and rFactor 2.

BEST NEWS EVER!
Thank you Studio 397.

I dont think calling people stupid just because they dare to work on other things is a valid response :whistling:
Probably not, but those namecallings always come out loud while gaming when something that is in front of user interaction is being ignored, while esporfs and tons of cars come first.

BTW, I pointed out an issue with the game, but seems like only word you saw was "stupid" and made it about me being an a****le and devs being the heroes that always work on "other things". Really feels like rF2 fanbase thinks rF2 is a free mod and S397 is doing it for free out of a good heart. It's a business. I paid hundreds for DLCs. So it gets frustrating to see many little things left ignored, and always encounter some user un-friendliness just to get to the driving part.

I didnt say they are heroes, your criticism of this issue is correct, its just not fair or helpfull to call the devs stupid or lazy when they didnt do a certain fix/feature/imrpovement for whatever reason they have or dont have.

Yes this certainly would help to fix it, but they atleast didnt do nothing but work on a bunch of stuff in the last few updates, it might just not be deemend important enough at this time, which is sad for the people that want this improved but thats how it is for now atleast

I gave up on rF2, but in 2022 they really made some things that I wished for. Particles, sounds, some UI etc. But still, the most effort seemed to go into releasing failed models from other MSG games. I said this before, rF2 should be free, so new users get into it. Then even DLC would maybe bring more money, and more feedback. Just surviving on DLC being bought by loyal customers doesn't seem to bring enough developing/fixing pace, you know?

See, it doesn't matter if it's official content or mods. The game itslef lacks a feature that shows what content is being used on server. Of course developers can't force users to put car class/mod name in server name. But a few public lines of "code" and UI elements could do it automatically for everything. Is system that flawed that it can't be done, or developers so stupid/lazy that they didn't think it's needed?
Why not add another small window with file list, next to those Drive/Spectate buttons?
Does AC include a line of what content is on a server? You don't even get the option to automatically download the content when you join a server in AC, right? They could have included that option, so those developers must have been lazy, too.

Why bring AC in to this? Why does every topic on RD have to end up as my-sim-is-better-than-yours topic?

Hmm? In what way?
I'm wondering if I can race against third-party modded cars (for example, downloaded from RaceDepartment), or if this is strictly limited to official rF2 DLC.

Trying to connect to an online multiplayer race has always been a headache. Sure, the game will automatically download missing content for me, but sometimes the download hangs - and I need to force a restart of the game. Other times, the content is downloaded and successfully installed, only for the game to tell me that I'm missing the base content of those mods. By then, I'll decide to return to single-player rF2, or multiplayer Assetto Corsa.

I am hopeful that this new rF2 update will encourage me to spend more time on this game.

You can already race against third party cars how much you want.
The game have to load the 3D-model, materials, sounds etc, so you will still have to download and install the cars, modded or not, if that's what you're wondering.

Okay, I'm probably doing something wrong then.

Haha yes. Have you ever used Content Manager?
Glad you brought that up, AC is a prime example of official devs saying it can't be done, and some russian dude doing all of it for free or donations.
I wouldn't be surprised if the same happened in rF2 case.

Or you could just download some of the absolutely WONDERFUL free mods for said cars and make your own series!!!!! It's really easy to do!!

In this instance, it is called compare & contrast. rF2 is still the only game that will automatically download 3rd party content if you're lacking it, yet people seem to be totally against the idea.

Could it be implemented better? Possibly, but so far no other developer has even attempted to do so in the past decade. So why rag on the developer for providing the option? Why no ragging on the server admins that use the feature?

Good News.
Hopefully same change for offline against AI.
Then I will buy rF2.

This means that, like all modern videogames, we will be forced to take up gigabytes of space on the SSD even if we have not bought those DLCs and if we never play online. :(

Will server admins have to own all content or can anyone set up a server with any content?
I doubt anyone will be able to answer that at least until they officially release the update. So perhaps next Tuesday you will get your answer when the release candidate is updated.
