rFactor 2 GT3 update announced for February 7th

GT3-Update-4-1.png
Studio 397 just announced a significant updated that will enhance all the 14 GT3 cars available in rFactor 2 that will see important physics changes affect the category.

Here is a list of all the announced changes and additions:
  • new tyre model
  • tender spring support (tender spring is a term that often designates a smaller, secondary set of springs mounted on a shock that is usually of a softer rate than the main spring and serves to soak high frenquency bumps and curbs)
  • traction control update
  • ABS update
  • downshift protection
  • sound update (integration into the new sound engine)
  • updated BoP
Studio 397 advertises that this will affect the way cars need to be driven, stating racers will need to adjust their driving style and setups accordingly. They also say the addition of shift protection to these cars will prevent unrealistic use of rapid fire downshifts to achieve unrealistic stopping distances - a tactic widely used by the fastest players in games without the feature, such as Gran Turismo.

Overall, this update should make GT3 cars "a richer, more immersive driving experience" and generally more accurate, as per the devs' words.

Finally, didn't even take a year!
Damn right will have to adjust driving style, old tyre model was so "special" it took some time to unlearn the bad habits I had from rF2 and they released GTE update.

Would be nice if older GT3 cars could have interior textures updated, fake pixelated shadows/ambient occlusion looks really old now.
Every time they update the tires in rF2, they get more like those in iRacing. So let's hope they keep working on tire updates.

Question for you, not attacking you or anything or saying you're wrong :)
Do you use HDR in the game?
IMO, HDR makes rF2 look better than any other sim on the market which doesn't have this feature.
What type of HDR are you talking about? The type of HDR that a lot of games apply via things like the graphics engine and post-processing or are you talking about true "physical" HDR where you need an HDR compatible monitor?

I had a whole thing written to try to dispel some things I didn't agree with that I saw posted above, but I decided to do the right thing and not to further fuel the firestorm of angry side conversations that appears on any rF2 article now. Doing my small part to keep things from going too far off topic.

Good news, but what about the interior of the cars, graphically they need
an urgent update to match the looks of cars like the Ferraris and the
Porsche GT3 Cup 992.
Fully agree. The content on this sim is insanely mixed. Some stuff looks OK other stuff looks terrible. This is the case for the cars and the tracks. And the track advertisements are terribly designed, all those Studio 397 signs look horrible and are immersion breaking. In other sims there's also track advertisements from fanatec and other stuff but it's done more subtle. In RF2 it reminds you every time that you're in a game.

Never had that issue.... ever
It's not an "issue", "bug", etc. It's how they created those assets.

Somebody else's screenshot from RD:

You can see a very stretched gear number. In general the aspect ratios are wrong and even within the same dash there are different aspect ratios of numbers. The "Lap", "Place" and "Fuel" data have completely different alignment despite being in the same "column". The "Place" data doesn't even fit into its area so the last number is cut off. The 1 2 in "Lap" and "Place" have completely different aspect ratio. If you would see the laptime numbers in movement, they are centered as a whole so if a "wider" number comes up the whole thing moves sideways back and forth. Etc. etc.

If all this doesn't bother you, consider yourself lucky. But in comparison to the other current sims this is very very subpar and breaks immersion for me.

Newer dashes in rF2 are much better so it would not be out of place to have these old ones updated since it's all premium paid content.

Same car in ACC in comparison (random google images screenshot, only look at the dash display):
ACC-12.jpg

For the record, I do not expect or even want a level of detail like ACC in regards of dash displays. But what the rF2 car has in this case is just... unacceptable. On the level of a 15 year old free rF1 mod.

RF2 has no HDR support so I'm guessing it could be the little HDR trick I used to do with my PS4 + TV. When you turn on HDR on the TV but leave it off in the OS and leave it off in-game, then my TV panel made use of the REC 2020 color space (HDR color palette). Which made it look very colorful and for some games it was even a bit of an improvement. Colors will get a bit saturated (adjustable!), but your eyes will get used to that.

I really want to like this game because the driving itself is great. But for me it feels just so unfinished/unpolished (the dash screen was a good example).
Sometimes I feel like they should just release RF3 as a fresh sim without all the old content which is not up there with the newest dlcs so that all the content in the sim has the same quality.
However, dont want to "hate" too much and looking forward to this update :)

I tried over and over and revisit RFactor 2 every 6 months... I cannot get to like this sim, too many issues,... Hopefully, they keep addressing them...
Similar. I gave the GT3 Porsche a go around the ring in VR and whilst it felt great to drive, it sort of didn't perform when i did an AI race. Even AMS2 seems better now. I guess I'll look again after this update.

I just love how they merged two GT3 Packs together so I can pay twice for half of it. This is half of the RF2 story in short... the other is just waiting and fixing problems... somehow it is the perfect race mechanic simulator - but that´s not mentioned in the descripton - and that´s not why I bought a steering wheel - although people keep saying the FFB seems to be good - one day maybe I´ll find out :)

Now that you mention this, I looked at item store, and holy s**t they re-shuffled everything. Now the Sebring is not in track pack, but in some sort of series pack. For a few years now it feels like they are doing everything for the "new customer", who starts from 0. But as soon as you become "existing customer" - screw you. Too bad you already have most of the content, either buy missing items separatelly, or get our now "deal" pack and pay twice.

Love this game, this is going to be a very welcome improvement. As someone that uses this in the winter months to hold me over until I get to take real cars on real tracks I get lost the most in this simulation. (Although proper clutch simulation would be high on my list).

I don't think it feels like iRacing at all. It's a lot more fun to drive. Definitely some rough edges, but the FFB is much more engaging and graphically on a good system the latest tracks and cars knock iRacing out of the park tbh. Just a shame everyone and their dog plays iRacing still.

Ok generally im whining in rf2 threads but I think this actually pretty cool / welcome, when it comes.

Pity about the dashes as people say. Since this is GT3 I also wonder about the TC/ABS have they now actually made that more realistic (like ACC) or have they just update the visuals (blinking lights on dash). I hope we get a decent car BOP with this update.

Personally i really dont like the dynamic "Fanatec"/"Coach Dave" billboards in e.g. ACC, they are not very subtle imo. I prefer the S397 approach, even though thats also a bit overdone on certain tracks.

There are something like 4 separate adjustments now for ABS & TC(two each) So far, only a few cars have been upgraded to take advantage of the wheelspin lights on the dash. That seems more like substantive improvement over flash.
One might think they could create fictional billboards with fake sponsors like ' Pencil Oil' or 'Zappy Spark Plugs', but then we never see the agreements S397 signs with the track owners so we never see the limitations that 'MAY' be included.
