The 2022 Formula One season is behind us and want to hear your pick or picks for which driver impressed you the most this year.

The revised Formula 1 regulations entering the 2022 season were intended to allow cars to follow closer and encourage more competition between the cars and teams after an eight-year reign by Mercedes. And while the cars certainly had improved ability to follow closely, the leveling of the competition was harder to spot.

An early season push from Ferrari quickly fizzled out, and the Red Bull cars led by Max Verstappen cruised to one of the most dominant seasons in F1 history. Despite this, there were impressive performances throughout the season from Verstappen and many other drivers. We want to hear from you who impressed you the most. Here are some ideas:

Max Verstappen – The obvious choice; Verstappen became the first driver in F1 history to achieve 14 wins in a season. Verstappen’s presence on the podium in 2022 seemed a foregone conclusion entering nearly every race, regardless of track type or weather. Verstappen now has two drivers’ championships to his name and looked unstoppable all season long.

George Russell – Russell would have had countless valid excuses if he had performed far worse in his first season at Mercedes than he did. Few people expected #63 to match his teammate, who happens to be the winningest driver in F1 history, but at the time of this writing Russell is ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the standings. This season included Russell earning his first victory and proving he belongs at one of the premier teams in the sport.

Lando Norris – Like Russell, Norris outperformed a teammate with a greater career win total. The disparity in pace between Norris and teammate Daniel Ricciardo in 2022 makes it difficult to assess the potential pace of their McLaren. Was Norris driving the wheels off a car that had no business in the top eight? Or was Ricciardo underperforming in an upper-mid tier car? The answer is likely somewhere in between, but undoubtedly Norris looked great, and even split the top teams in the standings through much of the early season.

Kevin Magnussen - Before the 2022 season started, K-Mag didn't even have a seat in F1. Fate intervened, and Magnussen ended up as the full-time teammate of Mick Schumacher at Haas. His 25 points so far in 2022 exceeds the expectations of most F1 fans coming into the season, and is double the current total of Schumacher. Magnussen also earned a pole position for the sprint race in Brazil.

Who is your driver of the year? One of the above? Someone else? Leave a comment below and be sure to vote in the poll.

Fernando Alonso was never so thoroughly beaten by a teammate in his career as he was by Ocon. How he's 2nd in this poll is beyond me. Then again, Vettel has some votes, so...

There's some bad luck in there, but of the seasons where he's been behind, it was only by a total of 5 points. Ocon beat him by 11 points.

Was he better than Ocon this year? I'd argue against it, but there's an argument to be made.

Was he better than Verstappen, Leclerc or Russell? Not a chance.
you're entitled to your view :)

yep he was, Alonso, had lot of unlucky moments. Watch races rather than the results

Lando from Orlando Norris is IMHO P1, the guy basically ended Dany Ric's career. The stats are crazy in their teammate duel... Poor Honey Badger :(
Max was outstanding too, but his teammate is the 2nd driver of the team & there to support him willingly or unwillingly.
And a shout out to Ferdinando Galfonso - he beat Ocon in qualy fair & square! The guy has speeeeeeeeed!
Leclerc's qualy speed was amazing too, but so too were Ferrari's strategists.
Hopefully, next season will be more interesting with more teams in the fight.

I won't re-watch the entire 2022 season, but I've watched every Q and race session.

I mentioned accounting for unlucky moments (3 more DNFs), but let's delve deeper. When not retiring, Ocon finished at the average position of 8.20. Alonso? 8.65.

Alonso beat Ocon 12-10 in Q. No domination.
Ocon has the highest position (4th) compared to Alonso (5th). No domination.

Alonso has been his old self this year: equal measures entertaining and toxic.

A case can certainly be made he was better than Ocon this year. I won't make it, but such a case can be made. To me, they were a very close pairing, Ocon maybe a smidge better, but I can accept the opposite view.

I've been watching F1 since Damon HIll won the WDC. I think Alonso is the best on-track racer I've ever seen. That he's only lost 5 points to his teammates at year's end in his entire career is a testament to his incredible talent and performance.

But his 2022 has been good, nothing special. A 2nd overall position in this poll, 36 times higher than his (more or less equal) teammate, is just wacky. Hulkenberg, Latifi, Albon, de Vries and Zhou are all ahead of Alosno's more or less equal.

Then again, Vettel is 4th, and while he had a decent season, I'M betting this has more to do with reputation than actual performance.

The order of the starting grid should be based on a random draw just like the groups in the FIFA world cup. This is what grants you great battles and defenses same as Sao Paulo. Putting the fastest car first is like making the rich richer and the poor poorer.

Alonso toxic? The old stupid story about Alonso and media. I can have my driver preferences but keeping saying about this old stereotype about Alonso is really dated. My vote was for him. I believe his level of driving this year was really high, as high as his ambition. Shame on Alpine reliability, but the guy was very fast on race. Alonso never was a qualy alien. Trulli and Fisichella could beat him several times too. His strong is the race management. But the best about him has been to demonstrate that a human is not a corpse in f1 after 40 year old barrier. Pity Vettel won’t keep driving. His last races have been good too, and he had a lot to show yet. Younger f1 fans believe each generation is better than the previous, they need someone to prove they are wrong.

Among the following overrated drivers:
Hamilton.
Bottas.
Vettel.
Ricciardo.
Magnussen.
Gasly.
Tsunoda.
Gyanyu.
who is the most overrated?

Ricciardo and Gasly probably? because Perez can beat them single handedly while not having half of their attitudes and ego?

Maybe Guanuy? because everyone made a legend out of him and his golden 6 points? vs. his teammate's bad 49 points? or Schumacher's bad 12 point or Magnussen's bad 25?

(This comment won't mention the worse drivers who usually get their fair share of hate, it's for those who haven't recieved the hate they should receive).

(Take it easy there's a bit of banter here, no offences).

imo

Hamilton: Not overrated, just too much SkyF1 dribble (as a Max fan)
Bottas: Fast, can't seem to overtake.
Vettel: A god at RB, underperforming and spinnella at Ferrari, let down by the car at AM.
Ricciardo: Never got to his potential after RB.
Magnussen: Too many crashes, especially on the first lap.
Gasly: Great at AT, poor at RB, Great at AT again, this season seems like a fluke, especially with this years poor car.
Tsunoda: Fast, too many mistakes and crashes. One of the best on team radio.
Gyanyu: Doing what is expected so for. Needs to keep improving though.

I'd pick Tsunoda? He needs to come good next season. But it's hard to say, out of this list, I feel nobody is really under- or overrated that much.

Norris for me. Alongside Verstappen and Russel he is the only driver that made a crap car look way better then it is in the past few years. I think he is the only driver who could actually challenge Verstappen if he would have the same car. But unlike Verstappen he does not have a crappy mentality.
"Driver of the year" is not only about being the fastest, but also what you do for your team. And Verstappen is just crap in that regard, possibly the worst teammate you can have, Checo can tell you a lot about that I guess. If I would be the owner of any team, Lando would be the driver I would like the most to have in my team.

Had to pick Max. Utterly dominant, no body came remotely close even while his team mate was struggling to secure second places.
I'm still hoping we'll get a year where Red Bull, Mercedes, and Ferrari are competitive with each other. Ferrari have such a good driver line up I'd hate to see even more careers fade out to nothing with that team.

I agree completely on the Lando part, one of the best drivers currently in F1 and also a very nice guy. But nice guys almost never win world titles (Vettel may be an exception, but also he had his moments with Ricciardo at RB). And also agree that Max may be the worst teammate you can have, but not for the same reasons a you have. He will always make his teammate look bad/slow and he will always want to win himself. That is good for Max and good for the RB team, but almost never for his teammate.

again you’re looking at stats. reason people are voting alonso higher is he had special drives. Something ordinary drivers like Ocon can’t do.

The World Cup groups are far from straight random, there are seedings, and geographic considerations before the comparatively complex draw is made.
Draw is from four pots, roughly based on World ranking, and no two teams from the same continent (Except Europe which could have up to two teams in each group) can be in the same group

Lewis Hamillton has gone from 1st to 5th. People have always said they want a shake up in the ranking's and when it happens they pretend they never wanted it that way in the 1st place.

Max wouldn't have won any title without Perez's help and besides, he's a spoiled kid who doesn't know a thing about teamwork, only exalts it when it's convenient for him. Russell really deserves, not this arrogant Dutchman, who is very reminiscent of kindergarten children, who want everything without giving anything, otherwise they will whine.
In any sport you have to be a Alpha Dog, Team mates are not realy team mates as the cars are close to identical and therefore skill and talent is what separates a #1 from #2. You have to be ignorant and stubourn to be a champion. It is hard to exel as a nice guy as it is harder to dominate that way. I think Max is nicer with the drivers behind the scenes but come race day you cant have freinds on track, espeshaly if they are close rivals. You cant be freinds with rivals it upsets the spirit of competition

I guess you're not a Max fan then? :) I don't know why you're so upset (it seems) about him though.
