Ferrari VGT9 officially unveiled


After a bit of teasing this week, the new Ferrari VGT9, specifically imagined for Gran Turismo, was officially uncovered at the Gran Turismo World Series finals at Monaco.

The car is inspired by the 499P race car that will take part in the famous 24h of Le Mans, but without being restricted by regulations. The engine base is the same: a turbocharged hybrid 3.0 V6, but freed up to deliver a combined total of 1356 hp, with 1030 hp @ 9000 RPM from the ICE being assisted by 3 electric motors, one of them powering the rear axle, and each front wheel being powered by its own. Aesthetically, while the focus was aerodynamic efficiency, the body nods at older race cars such as the 512S and 330P4, with the big, fluid wheel arches contrasting to sharp and geometric body lines and the rear wing setup and tail fin.

Ferrari's Design Director Flavio Manzoni said of the project: "The collaboration with Gran Turismo represented a possibility of giving life to a unique project that was developed within the Advanced Design department of our Styling Centre. We wanted to create a vision of the future designed without constraint, but born from Ferrari’s unrivalled understanding of engineering, aerodynamics and future technologies, and deliver it into the digital world for a whole new audience to experience.
With such freedom, designing the Ferrari Vision GT allowed us to create a style manifesto for the future of the marque; explore new languages and push the boundaries in all areas to produce a totally unique vehicle that we are confident the Gran Turismo audience and all Ferraristi will enjoy."

The car will be driveable in Gran Turismo 7 from December 15th, the day on which the 1:1 version will be placed in the Ferrari Museum at Maranello.

Honestly I'd like these cars more if they kept their performance in the realm of reality.

The VGT cars in Gran Turismo basically rocket around the track at arcade game-tier speeds. It would be neat to give them realistic tires and dirty air to see how they'd actually race. Instead it's basically meme car showcase.
 
Depends of the individual cars to be honest. I definitely agree some of them are completely fantasized and outright stupid to drive, but some others are actually among the best driving experiences in the game. The IGTL staff actually fell in love with how the Honda Sports VGT drove, so we hosted a race with it, which turned out to be great. Regarding that Ferrari, the announced power figure doesn't seem unrealistic per se, I wouldn't be surprized if they actually built a functional powertrain running that power. We'll just never know how reliable it can be while being pushed that much.

To me, Vision GT cars handling wise is like 1/10th scale RC touring cars.

Edit: I still prefer concept cars more than hoverboards when it comes to racing games.

It had 216hp and 980kg, a reasonably good sports car but nowhere near the fastest car in Gran Turismo. There was an LM edition in Gran Turismo 2 with 526hp/900kg but even that was outclassed by the JGTC and Le Mans GT1 cars.

The problem is, GT is "The Real Driving Simulator" as they advertise it, and the normal cars in it are already unrealistic enough compare to Assetto Corsa, with Vision GT into the mix, why not just add the ridiculous drift and call it Ridge Racer 8?

Well, they did add the ridiculous Drift and as far as I see most GT7 car and road tyre combination support the lurch to enter the drift... the biggest problem there is that there's no way to shorten the steering rack (360 degree rotation) on the G29 making controlling a drift with that wheel nigh on impossible, my lad plays with the controller and has no problem at all, that contradicts the PD's opening statement of "The Real Driving Simulator"
Nah, it ain't, it's an on-line arcade game now.
 
i am not a fan of vision cars, not even hypercars.
to me they are too much removed from palpable reality and known shapes or forms that are rather iterative designs based on previous models.
maybe these visions are needed for the creative minds of designers to help push their imagination limits, but for me as a normal car nut, these cars don't 'speak' to me at all.
a Porsche GT3 to me is a "car", a Pagani Huayra is a design piece to rather look at.

Bit annoyed my time was wasted on this. Just so I understand, a car manufacturer creates an imaginary car and we should think what? 'OH WOW!'?
Does it have guns? Rocket launchers? Does it fly? Is it a transformer?Can it turn into a submarine? No, wait! Can it go to the moon?
Care to publish the specs on my planned imaginary car? Teaser... 8 litre single cylinder, 5 THOUSAND BHP all in 400kg.

Dudes...please!
 
Kinda like it. Looks menacing. Change the wheels to something better, like a classic multispoke or even TURBO design, and reshape the ridiculous fenders, and it will look much better. Doesn't even come close to the Valkyrie though. But to be fair, nothing does.
 
I would like to see car companies use sims to let people try prototypes, but the higher end of the market just isn't interesting to me anymore. Electrics have made numbers meaningless, any car can have 1000 horse power now. I just find it harder and harder to get excited by cars I'll rarely ever see never mind the fact I'll never get to drive one.

I'd be much more interested in cheaper prototype cars that aren't chasing stupid performance numbers. That use electric to get back to more old school driving pleasure.
