EA Teases Need For Speed Unbound Art Style and Reveal Event

The next instalment of the Need For Speed franchise has taken the spotlight in the racing games scene today with an announcement, giving the fans a date and time to write down in their agendas.

What we expect to be a trailer will be dropped as a youtube premiere this Thursday, October 6 at 5PM CEST (8AM PDT).

There are already some infos to gather from the short video and a picture - potentially the game's cover - which appeared briefly on EA's website in the racing game's list section before being removed.

Rumours insisted heavily towards the game featuring "anime" style elements, prompting a lot of people to expect an Auto Modellista like artistic direction with cellshading. But at the same time, the word "photorealistic" was also used by sources close to the game, prompting confusion within the fanbase.

The global artistic direction seems to be heavily focused on street art culture, with graffiti being omnipresent in the material we got today. The car featured on the cover art - a new entry in the NFS series, the Mercedes 190E AMG Evo II - doesn't appear to be modelled drastically differently than what the 3 previous games gave us if you ignore the shaders effects, and it looks like the Chicago environments will retain a realistic appearance as well.

The cartoonish elements, which will be layered on top of everything else, appear to have a more western flavour than what the word "anime" would lead many to expect. The street art cues, the colours and overall style are actually very reminiscent of Jet Set Radio, a roller skating game originally released by Sega in 2000, which featured electro and hip-hop music, and used graffiti extensively as part of its gameplay.

To complete the focus on street culture and strong visual identity, word has that the characters would be getting the cartoon / comic treatment as well. If that proves to be true, expect colourful and unique character designs.

Although we still don't have much in terms of visuals for now, NFS Unbound already strikes with bold choices, and promises to look like nothing else in the racing game genre. And since Criterion is in charge of the development of this game, we can assume some more fast paced elements, with Burnout inspired mechanics, combined with this new visual personality has good chances of leading to high energy vibes. If your curiosity has been triggered, rendezvous in two days for the official reveal.

thats actually why i liked Driveclub. very underrated game and after some content patches it was a true jewel.
i'd say its the best point A to point B (non open world) arcade racer ever made. might be a stretch, but yeah
Agreed! Driveclub was definitely the NFS we never got. I still have the disc but unfortunately, I just can't get myself to play at 30 fps anymore. And since it was delisted some years ago, it'll probably never receive a 60 fps patch either. A real shame.

They just released the trailer and it looks garbage. Same old rubbish, just the cars from the last game put into the new with some pointless cartoon style people and smoke graphics

Too bad Auto Modellista was so disappointing, it had a real visual potential and did find a way to stand out from classical console racers like Gran Turismo, Sega GT or Enthusia. A Burnout 3 type of gameplay with Auto Modellista graphics would be an amazing arcade game, even today.

Oh my God what rubbish is This.
I just watched the Trailer its got to be a Joke nothing like the old NFS Series.
My Thoughts are, it suits Kids with a PS or a XBox and a Gamepad HaHa!
What's Your Thoughts on the Trailer?

@Wolfzz Something feels a bit forced to me. I also don't think it's the correct target audience for this game, tho.

I grew up a bit with Underground 1 & 2. Those games were great back then. Never played the NFS before Underground, tho.

As someone who has played the first three NFS games that were released 1994 - 1998 (btw imagine that, three games within four years, that's unheard of in todays development climate) i just find it super weird what has become of this series. Starting with the first Underground the series just lost me and since then i still check in on the new games to see if there is some kind of return to the roots of the first three games. But nope.
Oh boy the spent hours with Hot Pursuit's as a kid :inlove:... Watching the car introductions/slideshows, and listening the music. Sirius 909 most supercar-song ever, beautiful! Back then Need For Speed had the spirit, no tuning or bling etc. Pure passion about cool cars. Never forget those times, never.. Those and some other games back then, did give something special that havent happened since. And this isnt nostalgia talking. It was a great time to be a kid :)

It really is a shame they let this game die. I bet Evolution Studios would've made a banger of a sequel given what they learned from the first game.
Sony is doing unnecessary remakes and remasters like 5-6 years after the original games are launched but for this almost 10yrs old game they can't do it? Sad.

Personally dont understand why theyre still sticking with the Frostbite game engine. It was originally designed for Battlefield and does them games very well but when it comes to racing games its a massive flop. They should just bite the bullet and either use the Ego engine from codemasters which for the type of game it is would be perfectly suitable or the Unreal Engine.
Do kids understand the difference between engines? No. That's why. Need for Speed games are aimed at a certain audience and it doesn't include....adults, so it doesn't matter. Well, except from Shift 2 which can give Project Cars 2 a run for it's money with the right mods. I wish i had the patience to reinstall it.

I already hate it. NFS was great, up to NFS Porsche. After that, the wheel support, force feedback and driving physics got worse with every new iteration.
Force feedback wheels in the 90s ? That's not how I remember things were back then.

My 1997 Microsoft SideWinder Force Feedback Wheel worked great with NFS 2, 3, 4 and 5.

I haven't tried it myself, but I think even NFS 1 had FFB with the special edition windows release.

me and my friends around the age of 8-9 were collecting cards of cars from chewing gum packaging back in the day and we would know by heart all the engines of the supercars...
i only needed to see a couple minutes of gameplay of the first Underground game back then and i never bothered again with an NFS title...
so i'd say your assumption about kids and them not knowing stuff is not entirely accurate.
I'm talking about graphics engines. Not car engines. And no, 8 year old kids don't know sh!t about engines. Don't be ridiculous.

I'm personally okay when Need For Speed Unbound won't get released onto the Nintendo Switch.

I don't really get the hate. It's not a sim, of course, but it might be a very decent racing game.

I was with the hate before because there have been some incredibly mediocre NFS games over the past ten to fifteen years, but I've played NFS:Heat and was pretty impressed with it, finished the story and even hunted collectibles (something I rarely do in games).

The characters and story are a bit meh, but you get used to it and don't really notice it after a while anymore. It's not as cringe as it seems. The car selection is pretty nice and getting into progressively quicker and more expensive cars feels (for me) the way you want it. Of course it does have its shortcomings, but most didn't really bother me much..

If this is what Auto Modellista should've been twenty years ago, I'm game.
