Criterion Games Confirms Merger with Codemasters Cheshire

Codemasters and Criterion Merger.jpg
Criterion Games, known for its Need for Speed series, will merge with Codemasters Cheshire for future development work in the series under a single name with two locations.

The network of development teams under the EA banner has created an interesting partnership. Codemasters official Twitter account confirmed today that the development studio will partner with Criterion Games to "create the future" of the Need for Speed series.

Details are sparse as far as what the next iteration of Need for Speed will be, but the team behind it will be a bolstered Criterion Games. Criterion will now have two location hubs after integrating the Codemasters Cheshire team.

The post cites recent collaborative work between the two Electronic Arts owned studios, noting that the teams share "common values and similar cultures".

Criterion's team was tasked with a support role for Battlefield 2042, which delayed the release of a Need for Speed title previously expected in 2021. The developer is still targeting a release for the new NfS this calendar year, which should be a more reasonable feat with the additional support from the Codemasters Cheshire team.

What effect do you think the merger could have on the next Need for Speed title, if any? Let us know your thoughts on Twitter @RaceDepartment or in the comments below!

When I read Citroën name I hope for something more realistic than NFS.
I hope one day that hefty/ mega/ magor companies start doing big driving simulator projects at the same level of Microsoft Flight Simulator (or higher). Not to kill small devs, but to finance and inbest in them. I hope that the anticipated Motorsportgames filure will not stop the cars-and-driving enthusiasts from dreaming.

And then I'm like: Wait, what? That's "Criterion Games".

Nice, merger of studios..
.. on two locations. :cautious:
Hopefully that one hand knows, what the other hand, is doing.

Anyway, good to speed up the time
taken for upcoming releases, to hit
old and new gamers.

NFS?? seriously?...why? when simracing communities is demanding more and more realistic and inmersive racing games and they are thinkg about NFS, maybe they don´t have enough crash like Pcars3, Dirt5 or Grid 2019.....well at least one more game i´ll not buy

I think there are enough race sims out there already were you can complain about physics and ffb, of course as couch racer who never drove a race car irl, thats a must have thing :D I like to play my NFS, Grid games too :p

Must have? Seriously? hehehe Well you can buy every NFS they'll release, i drove Grid Autosport and was funny after It they only released games type "gimme gimme your money" with any efforts, like trash like Pcars3, Grid2019 ir Dirt5, you can build arcade games just for fun, but at least with some brain, not things like Pcars3 without boxes but with random weather, or absurd ffb from Grid2019....time will tell this new success Game like Grid Legends

D
A new NFS Underground would be awesome. No remaster, no remake. Just new! Underground 3. No MTX, No DLC, No NFTs. Just how it is. Old school, racing, awesome arcade-handling, imba music and lots of tuning

Man how the ex-Evolution guys have fallen. Codemasters Cheshire has a few Motorstorm devs, and that wild spirit showed through just a bit in Dirt 5; that's honestly the reason like it even if the driving is trash. Too bad that game was so rough even though it theoretically used their proprietary engine that the Motorstorm series and Onrush was going to use if it ever got a PC port, and now being gobbled up by EA...

I miss you Motorstorm. Died such an indignant death.

So let me ask you this. How did you get into "Sim Racing" i think for most these NFS game's and other's gave the itch for more...Look at the number's compared to all our Sim's to Forza to GT7 etc show's you what the people want ( i'm a fan of all thing's racing) Hell i really wish they bring GT7 or any GT to PC player number's would be crazy :D

For me i began on F1 Geoff Crammond Grand Prix, Indycar Racing 2 from papyrus or Gtr2 from Simbin, when i tried NFS shift was a deception, strange physics, worst ffb, and far away from Toca Touring, or another mentioned.

None of the big boys will take a punt on a true sim, the market is not worth the investment.
All you will ever see from the big boys are money makers like Forza and GT, Sims only come from the small teams.
Probably closest - and some will dispute that of course - is Codemasters with the Dirt Rally series. Big publishers are like big studios, they cater for a mass audience, even if they pretend to make something else it is never the same as a real independent production. Mass products for mass audiences.

Just take a look at Grid legends they used cars from Pcars2, Pcars3, Vrally4 and all base system and cars from Grid 2019, and they want to sell like "new game"?? great joke!! i hope they uses more tobacco on that cigarretes they smoke, we are not stupid

Compared to real racing cars (experiences in WRC & GT1 alongside real drivers), even today there is no game that could be called "simulation".
One title more or less won't change much in the future...
The games are still so bad, that's why I uninstalled AC, ACC & RaceRoom from my Computer.
