Have Your Say - Do You, Or Will You, Race Sims on Consoles?

Do You Sim Race on Console 01.jpg
With two major sim racing releases scheduled for release in the next three weeks, we want to hear whether PlayStation, Xbox and Switch have sold you yet on getting your racing fix on console.

Much of the sim racing world centers around PCs. Multiple hardware inputs, triple screens, mods, and a number of PC-only racing titles have given an advantage to those not gaming on consoles. But that advantage could be diminishing.

In our latest Have Your Say article, we want to read your responses in the comments below on this topic. Are you currently sim racing on console, or do you plan to in the near future?

February 24th is the scheduled release date for the 9th generation console edition of Assetto Corsa Competizione. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S owners will be treated to the well-loved GT3 and GT4 sim at up to 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. Pair that performance with the newest console-compatible sim hardware, and the gap to the PC experience is significantly narrowed.

Not long after ACC gets its 9th gen update, Polyphony Digital will be releasing another installment of the massive Gran Turismo franchise. Gran Turismo 7 will be released on PlayStation 4 and 5 exclusively. If history teaches us anything about the GT series, GT7 won't please the purists in our sim racing community, though it's sure to make significant waves in the racing game world.

Let us know your thoughts on console sim racing in the comments below. Are the aforementioned reasons why PC reigns supreme in sim racing world sway you away from racing on the console, or are there advantages you've seen in the PlayStation, Xbox and Switch world that are calling your name?

I just right now tailored my plywood racing-Sim-pit around a brandnew high end gaming PC featuring a RTX 3080 that I had to wait for 6 months after prepay order. I'm not switching to a console now. I'm rather saving money now for the new Polo GTI.

TBH I find de question a bit odd.

I don't really care if the sim is running in a PC, console or in a dishwasher. As long as the sim is good and the device is compatible with my wheel.

That being said, currently the best sims run either only on PC or better on PC. And consoles have those locks and rules about what wheels can be used, which doesn't help

It will be interesting to see how the physics in GT7 actually stock up against the established pc simulators. If it also gets VR support later down the line, we will have defiantly got to the point where the simulation advantage of a pc will be vastly diminished, and console racing will highly creditable.
Having to cater for controller support, and having hardware limitations, has always made Gran Turismo and Forza the softer titles in a lot of peoples eyes, but as the consoles have got more powerful, then full on simulation has always been more tempting for the studios.
Both Sony and Microsoft have far more money than any of the smaller hard core sim studios, and if they continually progress down the more simulation side with the option of driver aids to cater for the casual crowd, as I predicted a long time ago I could see these two becoming the dominant titles in the future with cross play.
I don't own a PS5, so will be following other YouTubers content on GT7. But will be looking forward and keeping a keen eye on Forza Motorsport, as having no VR it will really need to do some thing special to keep up with how GT is advancing.

With something like 400 cars in GT7, I doubt the physics will be on a par to any of the established PC simulators, but I hope to be surprised :D

Joke aside, if one has a decent PC and a well equipped rig , I have a hard time understanding what could be attractive to get a console.
On the other hand, if one has nothing, then, yes, it is an option.
but going to console from a PC, to me feels like going from this:

I can understand if it might be more affordable to someone to start on Consoles, but TBH PC is the ultimate goal for Sim Racing.

And if you are asking would some PC user switch to consoles for this, WHY would anyone sane do that?

Who knows, if the prices of hardware is still rocketing sky high and an new console with VR is more affordable.
But it could also be cloudgaming now with 10Gb up/download glassfiber internet.

Upon the recent videos shown for GT7

I have went out and bought a PS5 @ £550 and @ £140 on a M2 Gen 4 1TB drive with the 25 Year edition of the game pre-ordered @£90. So thats a lot to put into wanting to play a "console" For me, even the pad will do for casual fun, well for now at least...

Why do it?
Well for me, because it will be:

A) Fun
B) One of the best looking and sounding racing games to date
C) Offer both good online/offline gaming experiences
D) Great range of cars and will bring updates

You cant even have positive threads or discussions focusing on GT or Forza here at RD Forums, which is a shame. Some seem to forget that much of our hardware is just expensive toys, the sims are just games/entertainment. It used to be that "gaming" was about enjoying what you played, how and with who you shared or experienced that with.

I dont think you need PC for that and of course, the PC brings many of its own options or things that cant be done on console.
