RaceRoom Revises Ranked Server Format

RaceRoom Ranked Server Format Changes.jpg
RaceRoom's ranked online racing servers have received some changes to the general format.

RaceRoom Racing Experience's excellent online ranked racing has been updated with an improved format. Among the changes are revisions to the Rookie track rotation and new official series.

2022 has been kicked off in RaceRoom with week 1 of five different race series, including GT4, F3, GT3, WTCR and DTM. Each series will last roughly 3 months, with the track changing weekly. The servers are up all day, every day. Those with a driver rating of 80 or higher can race in the AM events (GT4, F3 or GT3), and 85 or higher rating allows you to race in the PRO events featuring WTCR and DTM.

Rookie races are open to all, regardless of your driver rating, and currently the selection of cars includes the BMW M235Si, NSU TTS, Audi TT Cup and the Tatuus F4. Both the Rookie and the main series races use a 15 minute race format, preceded by 15 minutes of practice and 8 minutes of qualifying. These sessions repeat constantly.

Finally, RaceRoom offers Endurance sessions and a weekly ranked feature race. The former is structured similar to the main race series in terms of qualification requirements, though the sessions are longer, ranging from 22 minute races to 60 minutes. AM races currently offered in the Endurance category include the 1992 DTM cars and the Porsche Cup cars. PRO sessions are currently set to FR X-17 and P2/GTE.

Format change notes:

- Rookie Servers now use all Free + Starter Pack tracks in rotation
- Official Series / Seasons
- Weekly Events on Saturday
- New Schedule on Monday

This is an exciting format for racing, and it seems RaceRoom is set up for a successful start to 2022. Give us your thoughts on the online racing in R3E in the comments below.

They may get more interest from the players if they develop an offline ranking system like in ACC allowing the players to train with AI and increase rating anytime they can. Not forced to go online to do it. AI in RRRE is good so it should be ok. Once they are ready the can join the ranked servers. Hybrid Online-Offline ranking system is the future imho.

IMO it's kinda pointless, as you can set the ai to lowest setting and destroy them farming your rating in the progress. Than jump online to find out your no where near your actual rating and have it plummet and or wreck others races cause your outta of your skill level.
At the end of the day your rank is based on racing humans not ai.

In regards to the new format its fantastic and I hope it draws many more players, especially some north americans so I can race with. :)
It would also be great if they had say 1 24/7 practice server running for each combo.

And after all the race games that have come and gone...it's about bloody time a developer copied iRacings online format!

Why do they insist in 15min races? A minimum of 20~25min would be ideal. Also 15min practice is a waste of time...
It's only the rookie class which I feel will work.
iRacing has a few 15 min fixed servers and there probably one of the most populated with multiple splits...jump in and get out...screw your race up and there's another right after.

Plus, the last time I joined a rookie server 3/4 of the field dropped out by the second lap when they realized they couldn't win or crashed.

Simracers still complaining it's not good enough because there are simply much better options on the market now, but RaceRoom is life

(sorry it had to be done :D)

Great work but should have never taken that long to do these updates. But still got bigger problems. Each time I click multiplayer menu I get "error 13" and the whole game crashes. Multiplayer has not been functional for me for over a year. Fix that and I will be back playing my favorite sim. But for now I will stick with ACC/LFM combo ;)

The article is factually wrong in that "driver rating of 80" is not required, rather than "driver reputation of 80". The reputation has nothing to do with rating or skill, it only measures whether the player can finish races without accruing too many incident points or getting the dreaded RaceRoom disconnect bug.

This must be your install or machine. Works pretty well for most folk. Maybe verify the files in Steam, or reinstall it. Move the location it installs to? Gotta be something else at play.

More you progress in single player more ACC requires you to race against stronger AI in order to increase your rating otherwise it will increase very very slowly. To me the goal when racing online and offline is to be consistent and clean. After that you can try to be fast. Don't care about being last , i'm a grown man.... I'm not this kind of guy... ACC rating is teaching you to be clean and consistent and it's doing it very well.

I like raceroom and i entered some ranked races.
But as i don't own all the content (and don't i tend too), i always have problem to find a race i can enter.

This is why i never understood why there was not at least one free combo per week available.
I will at least be logical in regards to the "free to play" logic of the simulation.

I am happy to see that thi gs could change in the right direction for my needs (i can just speak for myself and not for others of course)

Unfortunately, its not only me having these issues. They are well documented in their forum but none of the devs have addressed it. Its the only game I cannot play online.

You only have to take a look at the crashfests that take place in the free-content servers to understand why this will never happen.

Its a generic error for 'cannot reach server' - so still could be something local - firewall/AV/router issues. There's no way the system has been unavailable for the last year - perhaps maintenance slots, of course, but not constantly for an entire month. Pretty sure the devs would have been all over it if it was a server issue, cos lots of folk are racing. I have seen some similar posts on their forums but it's by no means all the time - and usually around updates time.

Five of my mates have raced regularly this past week so I still think it perhaps needs some investigation on your side.

Of course, you could try their discord too - as JP is often in and around in there ?

cool but with my g29 the ffb isnt there, just a opposite force but not feedback from the road

D
very good move from them, i stopped RRRE cause there was no ranked servers with my bad reputation, at begining of my journey with RRRE i did like 5-6 races and finished only 2, rage quiting rest so my reputation dropped so much i wasnt able to join any ranked server to restore my reputation, now i guess must spend some time with rookes until i get to that DTM 2020 rankeds xD

With the new format does Raceroom create multiple splits for each race or is it first come first served till the server is full?

I agree with AI teaching you to be clean and consistent, but I don't agree with offline ratings and online ratings being one and the same. The other problem @Kurupt CDN didn't quite mention about racing against AI for rating: regardless of AI difficulty level, they tend to have a pattern they follow...a "tell". It might show up as a particular corner that they're slower than you in, or an area where they don't know how to handle a human driver that close so they consistently (the entire field) brake/back out to avoid contact. This might sound identical to analyzing humans driving, but:

1) All humans you'll find on a server don't have the exact same "tell" or weakness in Turn 4; even if the drivers are of similar pace, it's not gonna happen because we all drive a bit differently and react differently...but mostly it's:
2) Human drivers can adapt and change their driving style (their "tells") to throw you off or bluff/dummy you...I have yet to see AI actually do this over the course of a multi lap battle. I haven't battled R3E's AI since 2019, but unless it's now suddenly the most advanced AI compared to all sims, I doubt it has this ability. It'll adapt to pace...but not strategy.

So in many ways, even against the fastest AI that sim offers, it's all about gaming the system if you can match the AI's raw pace...so the ratings can't be interchangeable because of this. Also, I've held my own against higher rated guys and lower rated guys have beaten me as well, not just because of the psychology involved in racing against humans, but also because ratings are fluid (a 2.2K guy in iRacing could be a 6K driver that just joined last month). Being ranked offline means you have a certain pace and are efficient at handling that games' AI on particular tracks, an AI that drives within the rules. Being ranked online means you have a certain pace BUT you can adapt to a multitude of players and situations with different driving styles and racing philosophies, many of whom might be very aggressive and abandon the rules when it suits them (temporarily or always). Most of the highest ranked guys in iRacing got to that level by knowing when to fight and when not to fight, or rather who to fight.

TL;DR: Being consistent and clean against a field of identical machines is totally different to being consistent against people who can analyze and have emotions, so the ratings can't be interchangeable.
