PC Building Giant Linus Tech Tips Builds Dream Sim Rig

Linus Tech Tips, best known for PC building and computer hardware reviews, has assembled a high-end sim racing setup.

It's so common for online personalities to post content featuring their sim racing rigs that we forget it how far our hobby has come in recent years. The latest big name to shine a light on the sim racing world is Linus Tech Tips. The Vancouver based online media giant posted a video featuring a new sim rig build with some impressive gear.

The video, titled "Building the ULTIMATE Racing Setup", amassed nearly one million views in the first day. The premise of the video was the LTT team building a triple-4K sim racing setup with motion.

Here are the major components used:
The test drive was done at the Nurburgring Nordschleife in Assetto Corsa. Nords is a tough track for even an experienced sim racer, but Linus' inexperience and frustrations were evidently overcome by the huge fun factor of this incredible setup.

A high profile content creator like Linus Tech Tips is another sign of the growth of sim racing, and a nice showcase of some of the great gear you can find in the RaceDepartment Store.

Are there any components of the Linus Tech Tips build that are on your wishlist? Is there anything you agree or disagree with in the build based on your own experiences? Let us know in the comments below.

The only thing he has that I don't have (yet) is the P1-X. I got confirmation today on the following:
'
  1. P1-X (Fanatec Mount)
  2. Sim Lab Single Monitor Stand
  3. Sim Lab pedal tray and slider
  4. Sim Lab seat slider
  5. Sim Lab seat bracket
  6. Sim Lab keyboard tray
  7. Sim Lab mouse platform
  8. Sim Lab P1 upgrade kit
  9. Sparco EVO L QRT

Was thinking about going from a 9900K to a 12900K, but that CPU won't make much of a difference at this point. The money spent on motherboard, memory and cooler upgrades wont' buy much. I already have a 3080ti, with a 38" 3840x1600 LG monitor so I think I am good.

"Heaven, I'm in heaven" :D:D:D

I just knew Linus was somehow into our world!
Jumped on the LTT wagon some 3 years ago, haven't watched all the vids, but sometimes I had the feeling reading something between the lines of Linux' words that the 'gaming' he spoke about was simracing.
Could be great with a major YT channel like LTT to chat and promote just a bit on hardcore simracing, now and then. A newyear wish :inlove:

Did not expect much from this video, I was wrong, this is a great video. The whole putting it together is hilarious. The test driving is also fun.

Because of the large, non SIM audience this will reach, this could be a big help to the cause.

The fun those guy's are having should be a reminder to the too many whiners that are polluting the threads on RD with negativity, that SIM racing is a blast. Even more so on a proper rig, as so many of us should be able to attest.

That they use AC in this, for me , is icing on the cake.
Thank you Mike for posting this, I would not have watched it otherwise, you made my day.

What's not to like, except how do mere mortals find an RTX30xx at retail? Well nice to know that a $20k racing sim will collect dust next to the Ms. Pacman arcade game.

Premium
It would be great if they did a revisit on this when they have it set up properly and show someone with a bit more of an idea. I get that its LTT and for a mass audience but a follow up with Linus and someone showing him the the ropes would be good.

I honestly had to stop watching shortly after Linus got on track with the finished setup. It was just too uncomfortable to watch this setup effectively squandered. That’s not a knock against Linus either. I fully agree he was thrown in the deep end with this car/track combination. Whoever made the editorial decision to use that combo is who deserves a wag of the finger in my opinion.

If you get your hands on premium [x] then I think most people want to see premium [x] being used as it’s intended with maybe a few gaffes and bits of silliness for good measure. This video felt the opposite once Linus was behind the wheel: almost all silliness and mistakes with relatively little sense of using the rig as intended.

Completely agree with this.
I understand the entertainment factor, but for this kind of equipment they should've at least tried to find one hard core simmer who would tune this the way it deserves.
Either they didn't bother or we're a dying breed.
When he lifted that DD base box, his reaction completely reflected todays so called journalism.
People don't want to know anything about anything.
All just meaningless fun.
Do some research, it's your job for God's sake.

Slightly jealous

Tho for $20k I'd much rather put that money into a used WRX or similar sports cars and rip around the Vancouver mountains and take advantage of the endless amount of old logging roads.

Oh wait, I did and for much cheaper $5k for a 06 WRX :)

Nobody notice the 2" gap between the side monitors in the picture above?

Its really funny for you to say considering linus.

He's a tech guru I know, I've been watching his videos for years.
That makes this video even worse.
I guess his doesn't take simracing serious enough.
But nevertheless, I would do my own research.
Imagine making a video about RC cars/planes, and present it like it's an overpriced toy for middle age crisis.

D
Man, I saw this video yesterday somewhere else.. Everything screams 'ARRGHHHHH'. Like some dude posted above at least ask someone who knows the in's and out's of simracing and it's hardware to help assemble the setup and the software. Now it's just some lousy advertorial...

I saw the smaller gap and THAT bugged me. If you found a 'cheap' WRX, be prepared for a Turbo Replacement. (Vancouver would be a beautiful region to 'drive' around)((if I could find it that is...All my maps have a grey area up there that says: Here there be Dragons!))
