Welcome to the 2021 Formula One Portuguese Grand Prix. Let's get talking about this weekend's race, and don't forget to back your favourite in our poll!

With various flyaway events unable to take place at the beginning of this year, the F1 calendar would have been looking relatively bare. After last year's successful visit to the Algarve International Circuit, we therefore return to Portimao for the third race on this year's calendar and F1's 27th in Portugal.

The track is given great character by its undulating nature, with many commenting on F1's first visit here that it was reminiscent of a rollercoaster. Ample track width also means that the circuit features plenty of overtaking opportunities. So many in fact, that the DRS zone on the main straight has been shortened to make it a little more challenging into turn one. An additional, short DRS zone has been added to the back straight however, which should make it easier for cars to keep up with one another during the middle of the lap.

A cool and dry weekend is expected, so we are unlikely to enjoy a repeat of the wet conditions the race started in last year. Also different to last season's event will be the track limits. Last year the white lines were used as the cut off point, but this time the drivers will be allowed to use the kerbs as the limit. It will be interesting to see whetherthis allows the drivers to match last year's lap times, in spite of the new regulations reducing rear downforce.

With Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton having finished first and second between them at both races this year, it's hard to look beyond one of them for the win on Sunday. With that being said, Sergio Perez impressed at Imola with a front row start, and will no doubt be looking to build on that momentum. Let us know what you're hoping for this weekend, and don't forget to vote for your favourite to win in the poll!

Its a shame they let this current formula run for 8 years now. and let the records seemingly be beaten easily, correct me if im wrong, this is the longest running formula period ever, i dont think even the Maserati 250F lasted this long.
Its not the engine regulation that lasted the longest, but its for sure the team domination that lasted the longest ever yes.

And whoever says that the Red Bull is on par with the mercedes, after seeing how easily they blast pasted Max on the straight, is delluding himself.

what engine regulation lasted longer? 12 cylinders? 1968-1976, still only by 1 year, and the chassis were radicaly different during that period and had what 4 different teams win the championship

Boring race, deserved win for Hamilton. And for Max: tracklimits apply to EVERY driver so stop complaining.
Norris: again amazing race: flawless on the edge.
And omg...watching F1 in the Netherlands with the dutch reporter Olaf Mol is aweful: he makes mistakes in reporting and is such Max fanboy that during the race he is bullying mercedes in a very childish way by parroting Toto Wolf. Time for Olaf to go...we need a mature reporter

Anyone remember when Lewis left the fastest car to join struggling Mercedes?
Lando driver of the day for his sheer pace particularly late on on old mediums

Yea it really sucks...I've stopped using cable years ago and was happy that F1TV finally added streaming to TV as an option...plopped down on the couch but had to reload it 20 times in the first 15 minutes of the race. Got pissed off and went back to my PC to watch the rest...but same issue. They need to sort that out ASAP...it's not like they don't know how popular F1 is worldwide.
Anything to do with using a VPN?
I watched it post event yesterday evening. Had same issues when watching live in Imola and Bahrain

The thing is: Botas's mercedes was as fast as max in race conditions in bahrain and portimao, in imola hamilton was on pole and then when it started to get dry was half a second faster than any rbr, yesterday mercedes dominated the all the qualy sessions and sent both rbr to the shadow realm, hamilton did a 17.9 with mediums in q2 that's still 3 tenths faster than any other laptime made by any rbr on all weekend, and rbr had a lot of upgrades and mercedes none. But, hey, rbr has the fastest car because it has been the narrative since pre-season.

I'm going to say what I have been suspecting since pre-season: mercedes last year switched development quite early to this year's car in order to put all their engineering department working on the 2022 car since January 1st. They have so much advantage over rbr that they are sandbagging to trap rbr into believe that they are in a title fight.

And because of that illusion rbr are going to be wasting engineering hours working in a car that won't win the wdc nor the engineering would translate to next year's car. So rbr will loose this year's title and will start the next regulations era with an undeveloped car. And as byproduct mercedes can act as the underdogs and make believe to the fans that they are winning impossible races with an inferior car.

In bahrain in each and every time that max was in drs range of hamilton in the second drs zone not only he didn't catch up to him, he even loosed gap in the straight, despite of having a drs open and a slipstream. Each and every time.

In portimao each and every time he was 0.6s behind bottas at the start of the main straight he was unable to close the gap, but even in the first restart of the race max had to get back to hamilton slipstream because he was running out of momentum, such is the way the mercedes pulled on the straight, and perez was a sitting duck on the straight, it took a little less than half of the main straight for hamilton pass him and return to the racing line.

Their car even without updates keeps getting faster and faster every time that rbr gets faster via updates, mercedes is clearly sandbagging to **** up rbr in the new regulations era.

Mercedes is the best car, and rbr isn't even close. They will engineer some **** up weekends as they do every year to gift a handful of wins to other teams in order to not trigger discussions about rule changes. This week even Paddy Lowe admited himself that when he was in the team they sandbagged to avoid a rule change.

I still remember the rbr being 16km/k slower at every straight back in the days in where Paddy says they where running with a engine mode so low as they could, I also remember how in bahrain hamilton and rosberg dissobeyed team orders and started using superior power modes and in 16 laps they pulled almost half a minute over everyone else.
Red Bull is not 16kmh slower than the Merc this year and if Mercedes had two drivers like Bottas, Verstappen would be cruising first. It is true that Mercedes seems to have again an edge over RedBull but they might have been obliged to push their engine and pay it later on in the season with reliability issues. Also Imola and Portimao are special tracks, it is hard to judge cars after a couple of races there. Barcelona will be a more serious test.

At the moment LN is mclaren's most competitive driver.
This may, and probably will, change at some point during the year, but nevertheless it is quite remarkable given the opposition.

Hands of Olaf, and mature your self will you.

Ah, all is as it should be again in the Universe.

The telling thing to me today was Max hitting DRS constantly and not catching Bottas. Whatever line of stuff that has been put out about RBR having the fastest car, was put to rest, in my mind, today. That car just couldn't keep up and Max has some talent.

I think cooler temps may have helped Merc as usual, but the fastest car ain't RBR.

Fastest car as in, in a straight line or fastest laptimes or fastest with the same rear wing angle/drag (however that would be measured) or fastest in it's ability to follow closest around the turn before the DRS section?

Oh boy, did i step on ur long patriotic orange toes?
Im making a valid point as Olaf cant control his childish emotions (parroting Toto Wolf) when the Mercs are faster...that is just pathetic reporting for a world class race series.

No not this year...I used to need a VPN in previous years but this year it's works without it. The issue seems to be happening with others in native F1 countries with internet speeds faster than mine (and mine is already plenty fast), so I'm convinced it's F1 TV at fault. It's worse at the start and the end of the race so I'm assuming it's traffic overload on their servers.

Can someone please explain to me the strategy with Pérez? He started on a good set of Mediums that he wore through Lap 51. Hamilton switched from Medium to Hard on Lap 37, coming out of the pits 13 seconds back. From this point, Hamilton was running about 1s/lap faster and overtook Pérez (unsuprisingly) 13 laps later. This is something that really shouldn't be happening on a harder compound, but Red Bull should have done something. Granted, Pérez wasn't going to win this race, but an earlier pit stop to cover Hamilton might have given him a fight with Bottas for P3. Instead, they left Pérez out way too long and he finished 6 seconds behind Bottas. It would have been much more if Bottas didn't pit for the Soft tyre to get the fastest lap, but an earlier pit stop could have made Mercedes think twice about that, too.

The RB team can, but my guess is that they had hoped Max could catch Louis and that Checo might have been able to facilitate a pass. As it happened, Max did not carry enough speed out of the final turn.

If there was a Safety Car (always a possibility with Mazepin on track) then Perez would have been in great shape.
