Have Your Say – Which Racing Title Is Overdue for a Sequel?

Sim Racing Sequel 01.jpg
Let us know in the comments below which racing game or racing sim you’d most like to see get a sequel first.

Racing titles can have an unusually long life span relative to other sports games. We want to hear which racing sim or racing game you feel is now due (or overdue) for a sequel.

There are many reasons why a racing title might be due for a sequel. Some might be at or near the limits of the gaming engine it’s built on. Others might be based on cars, tracks or racing series that are no longer relevant. Still others might be long forgotten by the developer, or the developer has gone out of business, and the game needs an update for modern hardware and gaming engines.

The racing game and racing sim community has been made aware of pending sequels for Assetto Corsa and Gran Turismo. Little is known about the AC sequel so far, but the GT title appears to be better versions of the existing, successful premise. Games like Need for Speed, GRID and Forza Horizon also have sequels pending. In this case the new release is an updated version of a proven formula, but some titles might be due for an overhaul.

RaceRoom and rFactor 2 are both currently supported titles that date back to 2013. New content, bug fixes and general improvements are frequently released by developers Sector 3 and Studio 397, respectively. But in both cases the game is based on an engine that provides players with a rewarding sim experience while lacking the eye-popping graphics of many of their contemporaries. Perhaps either or both are due for a new title on a more modern engine.

There are also discontinued titles and series such as Grand Prix, GTR and Driveclub that fans have been wishing to see updated for years. Grand Prix 4 is considered by some to be the greatest racing title ever made. GTR3 was reportedly in development over the past few years, though most now consider the project to be terminated based on the cancellation of the social media accounts. Driveclub is a cult favourite in the console world, with fans still enjoying the underrated game while curious outsiders seek physical copies to buy online to try it out.

So let us know in the comments below which sequel you’d most like to see in development. Maybe it’s a current title that’s now showing its age, or maybe it’s a mostly forgotten title that deserves a reboot on modern hardware. Let us know what title you’d want to see, and what changes you’d like to see versus the previous edition.

........or the studios of those sims join forces to make engine they all agree is the best and all use it

upsides.. give it just a minutes thought, yeah, too much to list

downsides ?

I would like a proper sequel to Driver meets GTA , 4 man crews, big guns, best sim physics, upgradable cars
It's not possible to make 2 different physics guys completely agree on their implementation, and now you want to make *all* of them try to do that?

Besides, most consumer sim devs are not really simulation or engineering experts, so attempting to collaborate to make an unified sim engine wouldn't lead to an ideal physics implementation. I think you'd be more likely to achieve that if you tried to make an engine that can highly correlate various forms of vehicle simulations for professional use; it's not going to happen via trying to bash 10 game devs together who are all more or less doing the same sports-and-racecar game thing IMO.

RF3 would love to see with more of a today's graphic look, but NOT TOUCHING the moding community access . ASR has given me " and i speak for myself only " so much to love about RF2 , that without these mods and to many others, they would become control freaks like Raceroom of witch I have all content but just can not bring myself to like the sim. I play more Forza motorsport 7 then Raceroom and that should not be ? Would also love to see ACC 2 go more mainstream No CR8 or CR7 and I get why , but still a slap in the face on what is a very good platform base to build on say DLC but I bet Licensing bullshit I am sure. ACC 2 Can Am sim , I know , chasing unicorns .

An IndyCar Racing 2 sequel. Would love to have a high quality Indycar game like ACC for example.

Also V8 Supercars. We Aussies are the poor cousin when it comes to dedicated Australian content. Early versions were rubbish. We need a Aussie sim with also 1970 Historic content.

Games that should have existed by now:
Auto Modellista 2, PGR5, Sega GT 4+, GTR3, Juiced 3, Midnight Club 5, Daytona USA 4, RBR2, and probably a whole load of others. Unfortunately only one of those titles is likely to ever come out.

Here are the IPs that I would like to see them having new installments are:
  • Assetto Corsa
  • GTR (Simbin/Sector3 Studios)
  • Enthusia Professional Racing (Konami)
  • Battle Gear
  • Project Gotham Racing
  • Sega Rally
  • Ridge Racer
  • SCUD Race
  • MotorStorm
  • Racing Jam (Konami)
  • Blur
  • Motorhead
  • Burnout
  • F-Zero
  • Midtown Madness
  • Midnight Club
  • Split/Second
Solid list right here.

- Assetto Corsa is really outdated. Yes I know about the mods, still all tracks look terribly outdated. But part 2 is already worked on so that's great.
- iRacing's graphics are also very outdated, same as AC, the tracks look terrible. But also their night mode looks terrible. iRacing really needs an huge update to make it part 2 also.
- Raceroom is also not of 2021 anymore. Needs an part 2 also, let's hope that it gets better VR performance.
- rFactor, difficult to say if an part 3 makes sense. They have the worst team of all development teams, part 2 has so many flaws that I don't believe that they are able to make an part 3 that really works.
- Don't agree with Luciano Santos Fulho here, Automobilista 2 is the best of all and it's close to perfect and doesn't need an part 3 yet. Let Reiza focus on this game, they are doing great, every update is great.
- Dirt Rally 3 really needs to be announced, but let's hope that they implement VR properly this time.
- Same for RBR, needs an part 2 with VR.
- Not a sim, but Outrun 2021 would be loads of fun too.
Finally, somebody who isn't bashing on AMS2 for swapping to a newer engine.

Recently I've found a wonderful HD conversion of Star Wars: Tie Fighter that got me into playing it again. Last time I tried on a modern PC there were too many issues, plus controller support was limited.

I know Tie Fighter is a much older title than GTR2 (1994 vs. 2006), but are there any recommended community mods that brings GTR2 up to more modern visual standards? Maybe even with some form of Triples and/or VR support? I wasn't simracing in those days, so I've always wanted to experience firsthand what all the hype is about (also not sure if it supports separate wheel and pedal combos)
