Have Your Say – Which Racing Title Is Overdue for a Sequel?

Sim Racing Sequel 01.jpg
Let us know in the comments below which racing game or racing sim you’d most like to see get a sequel first.

Racing titles can have an unusually long life span relative to other sports games. We want to hear which racing sim or racing game you feel is now due (or overdue) for a sequel.

There are many reasons why a racing title might be due for a sequel. Some might be at or near the limits of the gaming engine it’s built on. Others might be based on cars, tracks or racing series that are no longer relevant. Still others might be long forgotten by the developer, or the developer has gone out of business, and the game needs an update for modern hardware and gaming engines.

The racing game and racing sim community has been made aware of pending sequels for Assetto Corsa and Gran Turismo. Little is known about the AC sequel so far, but the GT title appears to be better versions of the existing, successful premise. Games like Need for Speed, GRID and Forza Horizon also have sequels pending. In this case the new release is an updated version of a proven formula, but some titles might be due for an overhaul.

RaceRoom and rFactor 2 are both currently supported titles that date back to 2013. New content, bug fixes and general improvements are frequently released by developers Sector 3 and Studio 397, respectively. But in both cases the game is based on an engine that provides players with a rewarding sim experience while lacking the eye-popping graphics of many of their contemporaries. Perhaps either or both are due for a new title on a more modern engine.

There are also discontinued titles and series such as Grand Prix, GTR and Driveclub that fans have been wishing to see updated for years. Grand Prix 4 is considered by some to be the greatest racing title ever made. GTR3 was reportedly in development over the past few years, though most now consider the project to be terminated based on the cancellation of the social media accounts. Driveclub is a cult favourite in the console world, with fans still enjoying the underrated game while curious outsiders seek physical copies to buy online to try it out.

So let us know in the comments below which sequel you’d most like to see in development. Maybe it’s a current title that’s now showing its age, or maybe it’s a mostly forgotten title that deserves a reboot on modern hardware. Let us know what title you’d want to see, and what changes you’d like to see versus the previous edition.

Favourite sims include Assetto Corsa Competizione, Assetto Corsa, rFactor 2, Automobilista 2, DiRT Rally 2 - On Twitter as @simracing604

I think it's time for rFactor 3. rFactor 2 was deeply flawed when it was launched, they've improved it but it's hard to improve a game that was not good to start with.
I think the vast majority of simracers will agree that rF2 is the best feeling sim ever made, regardless of its shortcomings.
Even today, 8 years after its inception, it is the only sim I have installed on my PC.
The driving feel, the tire flex feel, it's just unparalleled.
The AI, when tuned correctly within a single class, is the most life-like I have ever encountered in a virtual environment.
The laser scanned Nordschleife is something the entire simracing community had been dreaming about for decades. I've tried other versions in other sims, they just can't compare.
Graphics are very natural, at least to me.
The old UI, which I still use, is the most straightforward interface I've seen in a simulation software.
My point is:
We will probably never see a better sim in the future.
Why - it just isn't economically viable.
A hardcore sim will never be mainstream, it is catered only to nerds and enthusiasts.
Image Space Incorporated consisted of those passionate, realism striving maniacs.
And now, rF2 is owned by a gaming publishing company.
Trust me, if rF3 ever comes out, it'll be a complete mess.
Modding support - forget about it, track learning AI - forget about it.
The physics will have to be watered down in order for the "game" to appeal to a wider audience.
Look what happened to Automobilista in a modern engine.

I'm excited and waiting any news for AC2.
Don't really have any other expectations besides that, i doubt we will see an Rfactor 3, their new parent company using it's tech to make different titles with arguably better sales potential.

GTR and other stuff, they are well past defunct now, that's just the truth.

I would like Automobilista to have a sequel.

I mean it, no joke. An actual sequel to it. I wish Reiza could simply keep working over the foundations of AMS and make something even better (better graphics and sound, broader content) but within the same "spirit" in terms of handling and simulation.

I am not here to complain about AMS2, I know Reiza had their reasons to make the decisions they made. But it is just something else, quite different.

- Assetto Corsa is really outdated. Yes I know about the mods, still all tracks look terribly outdated. But part 2 is already worked on so that's great.
- iRacing's graphics are also very outdated, same as AC, the tracks look terrible. But also their night mode looks terrible. iRacing really needs an huge update to make it part 2 also.
- Raceroom is also not of 2021 anymore. Needs an part 2 also, let's hope that it gets better VR performance.
- rFactor, difficult to say if an part 3 makes sense. They have the worst team of all development teams, part 2 has so many flaws that I don't believe that they are able to make an part 3 that really works.
- Don't agree with Luciano Santos Fulho here, Automobilista 2 is the best of all and it's close to perfect and doesn't need an part 3 yet. Let Reiza focus on this game, they are doing great, every update is great.
- Dirt Rally 3 really needs to be announced, but let's hope that they implement VR properly this time.
- Same for RBR, needs an part 2 with VR.
- Not a sim, but Outrun 2021 would be loads of fun too.

RallySport Challenge was a blast, one of the best arcade rally games ever.
Very, very underrated.
RFactor needs the updated Forza engine, with of course its own physics carried over, with some improvements.

It is very unfortunate that DICE has discontinued developing their driving games including Rallisport Challenge Series, Motorhead and others as they focus on the Battlefield series.

I think I had Pit Stop for the ColecoVision console. You would drive a certain number of laps, then pit and use the joystick to move your guy to all 4 tires, refuel & repair. I'm not sure, but I seem to remember the ColecoVision was powerful enough to allow horizontal split screens so two players could race against each other...Pitstops probably occupied more actual gameplay time than the racing. :)

Going by the sales figures most sim-racers didn't buy it, and going by the concurrent users numbers most people that did buy it have abandoned it.

So I'm thinking your claim maybe a little optimistic.

Personally I was so disappointed in rF2 I moved away from sim-racing until AC came out....and not because it was "hardcore" but because it was a bit **** on multiple levels.

I'd love to see a sequel for Leadfoot and rF2. Leadoot because it was a great game, and rF2 because it was such a failure after the greatness of the original.

And GPL and RBR, Just to see them sabotaged by the delusional user base of the originals.

The problem with rF2 is that it needs several addons and lots of tweeking to even work and look properly !

Didn't last long on my PC either !

I choose Ac, ACC any day of the week instead !

+1

Shame it counts for naught because in the real scheme of things most rather have chrome ashtrays then good handling

Go figure

WRC. We need a proper official WRC title, not KTs garbage.
TOCA Race Driver. Or something with DTM and TCC.
Shift. I'd love to have a proper Shift 2 sequel, with all the features and content it had and good physics.

I would like to see a game with rfactor 2 physics, ams2 graphics and pc2 career mode , Nascar ignition will use rfactor 2 physics and decent graphics engine, buti'm not into oval racing, so a game like nascar ignition butt non oval racing would be the best sim for me....

........or the studios of those sims join forces to make engine they all agree is the best and all use it

upsides.. give it just a minutes thought, yeah, too much to list

downsides ?

I would like a proper sequel to Driver meets GTA , 4 man crews, big guns, best sim physics, upgradable cars
