Have Your Say – Which Racing Title Is Overdue for a Sequel?

Sim Racing Sequel 01.jpg
Let us know in the comments below which racing game or racing sim you’d most like to see get a sequel first.

Racing titles can have an unusually long life span relative to other sports games. We want to hear which racing sim or racing game you feel is now due (or overdue) for a sequel.

There are many reasons why a racing title might be due for a sequel. Some might be at or near the limits of the gaming engine it’s built on. Others might be based on cars, tracks or racing series that are no longer relevant. Still others might be long forgotten by the developer, or the developer has gone out of business, and the game needs an update for modern hardware and gaming engines.

The racing game and racing sim community has been made aware of pending sequels for Assetto Corsa and Gran Turismo. Little is known about the AC sequel so far, but the GT title appears to be better versions of the existing, successful premise. Games like Need for Speed, GRID and Forza Horizon also have sequels pending. In this case the new release is an updated version of a proven formula, but some titles might be due for an overhaul.

RaceRoom and rFactor 2 are both currently supported titles that date back to 2013. New content, bug fixes and general improvements are frequently released by developers Sector 3 and Studio 397, respectively. But in both cases the game is based on an engine that provides players with a rewarding sim experience while lacking the eye-popping graphics of many of their contemporaries. Perhaps either or both are due for a new title on a more modern engine.

There are also discontinued titles and series such as Grand Prix, GTR and Driveclub that fans have been wishing to see updated for years. Grand Prix 4 is considered by some to be the greatest racing title ever made. GTR3 was reportedly in development over the past few years, though most now consider the project to be terminated based on the cancellation of the social media accounts. Driveclub is a cult favourite in the console world, with fans still enjoying the underrated game while curious outsiders seek physical copies to buy online to try it out.

So let us know in the comments below which sequel you’d most like to see in development. Maybe it’s a current title that’s now showing its age, or maybe it’s a mostly forgotten title that deserves a reboot on modern hardware. Let us know what title you’d want to see, and what changes you’d like to see versus the previous edition.

RaceRoom, Rally Sport Challenge, Sega GT (Spritual successor to the Dreamcast version, not the Xbox 2002 reboot), Project Gotham Racing, Out Run (I love what they did with the last version of that game. Keep it going!) Hard/Race Driven (Now that I know how to drive, it would be nice to play/have a modern version of this classic arcade game), Excite Bike (why the hell not?)

A few games no one mentioned (as less sim):
Motorhead (sequel was canned), Powerslide (sequel was canned), Stunt Car Racer (sequel was... you get the picture!).

Another Outrun, proper Crazy Taxi sequel, another Hydro Thunder (or a home release of H2Overdrive (yes I know there's a loader for the arcade version on PC lol). Another Extreme-G, a new WipEout (on PC haha), maybe a Virtua Racing 2? Dethkarz 2 (bit too niche?). A modern Power Drift might be fun. A new Chase HQ anyone?

Maybe another Screamer? Gravel came close though. Anyway I'm rambling now haha

Bring another GT-Legends and I will sell one Kidney and 60% of my liver as well as my left lung to get it as soon as possible.

Can't believe it! I read two pages of comments without any bullying. I said one time on IRacing forum that "IRacing feels old (late 2000's) in many aspects and I am looking forward for a sequel that is at the same level of the price". And then fanboys bullying and IRacing staff bantning me for "pessimism" started and never ended until I quit sim racing all together.

Good job guys having civilized talk!

This is a no-brainer. The greatest rally title of all time, Richard Burns Rally seriously needs a sequel- with the same fantastic physics that have made it a classic!!
I came here to write this. About time someone would try a more simulation approach with soft-surface physics.

In sim racing, I'd love to see Raceroom and GT Legends get a sequel (Raceroom would have the cars, tracks and weather from GTR 2 and Race 07, only reason I'm not naming them).

TOCA 2 needs a sequel badly as well as IndyCar Racing 2 (hoping Motorsports Games deliver). I'd love a sequel to Grand Prix 5 using unlicensed content that the community could then tweak. I love Dirt Rally 2, but I wouldn't say no to Richard Burns Rally 2 either.

In arcades, I'd love a sequel to:
- PGR
- Driver
- ReVolt
- Midtown Madness
- Need For Speed High Stakes, Hot Pursuit (1 & 2)

A sim is different from an arcade title... We don't need new engines or new titles but the current ones to be polished with an aim at perfection. The point is to simulate real physics not to provide a "superstar career experience" or other nonsense like that. It makes no sense to completely redo everything that's already semi done to a point, adding a multitude of new issues and bugs in the process, just for the sake of reselling it again as "new" title.

This is easy!! RaceRoom Racing Experience!! Not so much a sequel but a makeover. Graphics need to be upgraded to at least DX11. Other than that, the title itself has much to offer.
