Have Your Say – Which Racing Title Is Overdue for a Sequel?

Sim Racing Sequel 01.jpg
Let us know in the comments below which racing game or racing sim you’d most like to see get a sequel first.

Racing titles can have an unusually long life span relative to other sports games. We want to hear which racing sim or racing game you feel is now due (or overdue) for a sequel.

There are many reasons why a racing title might be due for a sequel. Some might be at or near the limits of the gaming engine it’s built on. Others might be based on cars, tracks or racing series that are no longer relevant. Still others might be long forgotten by the developer, or the developer has gone out of business, and the game needs an update for modern hardware and gaming engines.

The racing game and racing sim community has been made aware of pending sequels for Assetto Corsa and Gran Turismo. Little is known about the AC sequel so far, but the GT title appears to be better versions of the existing, successful premise. Games like Need for Speed, GRID and Forza Horizon also have sequels pending. In this case the new release is an updated version of a proven formula, but some titles might be due for an overhaul.

RaceRoom and rFactor 2 are both currently supported titles that date back to 2013. New content, bug fixes and general improvements are frequently released by developers Sector 3 and Studio 397, respectively. But in both cases the game is based on an engine that provides players with a rewarding sim experience while lacking the eye-popping graphics of many of their contemporaries. Perhaps either or both are due for a new title on a more modern engine.

There are also discontinued titles and series such as Grand Prix, GTR and Driveclub that fans have been wishing to see updated for years. Grand Prix 4 is considered by some to be the greatest racing title ever made. GTR3 was reportedly in development over the past few years, though most now consider the project to be terminated based on the cancellation of the social media accounts. Driveclub is a cult favourite in the console world, with fans still enjoying the underrated game while curious outsiders seek physical copies to buy online to try it out.

So let us know in the comments below which sequel you’d most like to see in development. Maybe it’s a current title that’s now showing its age, or maybe it’s a mostly forgotten title that deserves a reboot on modern hardware. Let us know what title you’d want to see, and what changes you’d like to see versus the previous edition.

I'm waiting for so long for a proper Formula 1 sim game that my choice is for a Grand Prix 4 sequel. I badly need that :(

A proper sequel for GTR2 would be really nice too, and for modern titles, I would say AC2 with improved graphics and better AI.

Tourist Trophy :( The first game was so cool but just more of a light tech demo gran turismo. No money, no customization for the bikes beyond tires and exhaust, and its still the best sounding, best looking, and best playing bike game ever made.

None should have a sequel full of good games nowadays.
Instead they just could keep updating or addind content.
Hope to see 90s btcc cars back again in one of this modern games.
By the way Assetto corsa has been updated with the wonderfull content manager and sol, mods and still is great and fun game.
Squels has become a waste if time in some titles.

I’m going to stretch the bounds of the question a bit. The one sequel I would like to see is a complete modern refresh of the rF1 HistorX mod. I would purchase that as a stand-alone title.
I second that, especially if it was developed by old SimBin Team, Kunos team and old Reiza team. Ok, dreaming again...

GP2 Remake with hotseat mode! 90s F1 still the best.
GPL2
Nascar 2003 sequel
Richard Burns Rally 2
TOCA 2 remake
ah and truly AC2

Race 07, or Gtr2. I still play these titles daily. The offline racing against AI is much better than AC. And I don't even think a graphic update would be necessary—just an improvement on the FFB and track mesh. And perhaps some updated car packs.

RBR and GTR2, without a doubt. Never have tried GPL, but from everything I've heard, it deserves one too.

Incidentally, all RBR and GTR2 would need is updated car and track models (like we have for GTR2 here on RD) to standards a modern medium-level PC can handle along with (if not too difficult) some multithreading in the physics code. And it'd be nice to add graphics enhancements/fixes from the WorkerBee mods for RBR and from AMS for the gMotor2 engine for GTR2. And for GTR2, you'd need to fix the "blue flag" multiclass bug that makes single-player multiclass enduros in top class cars impossible. If someone bought the source code for RBR or GTR2 and did those things above -- even with the EXACT same content as the originals -- I would buy the updated game so fast, you have no idea!

EDIT: and NR2003, of course. Perhaps iRacing could use its code and release a spin-off single player oriented game utilizing their new AI systems for stock cars?

RRE with a new DX12 graphic engine with support for raytraced shadows, reflections, SSAO, SSRF.

Now, with all the new FFB/Physics, Ranked player, best sounds, amazing tracks, great AI, this title would take the crown :)

Chequered Flag.

In all seriousness, A worthy successor to AC would be perfect. An up-to-date platform with the latest physics, tyre models etc. but still completely open to modding. Well, that or Grand Prix Legends.

Grand Prix 4, still based on V10 F1 but with an up to date physics engine, and better graphics. The AI, dynamic weather and the 'feel' of being in a race weekend with strategies, failures etc are second to none as far as i'm concerned. The thing that lets it down is the car physics, they are unfortunately very dated, whereas sims made before and slightly after (GPL,rfactor) have better stood the test of time in that respect.
