2022 Formula One Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Formula 1's eighth race of the 2022 season sees the field take to the streets of Azerbaijan with Red Bull and Max Verstappen carrying heavy championship momentum into the weekend.

Sergio Perez collected his first win of the season at Monaco the last time F1 raced, notching the fifth win for Red Bull over seven races. Red Bull and driver Max Verstappen now hold the lead in both the constructors and drivers championships.

Ferrari's strong start to the season has slowed somewhat, though Carlos Sainz managed to split the podium finishes for Red Bull last time out. His teammate Charles Leclerc was unable to collect a first victory at his home race, though his fourth place finish was better than many previous outings in Monaco.

George Russell's impressive season continued through the seventh race, as he crossed the line with his Mercedes with yet another top five finish. Teammate Lewis Hamilton looked stronger in Monaco than he had in previous races this season, but could not find his way past Fernando Alonso and was the first in a long train of cars that stagnated on a track where overtaking is rare.

Finishing behind Russell was Lando Norris, who has been the better performing driver for McLaren this season. His team finds themselves with a sizable gap to the next constructor in the championship for the first time this year.

Azerbaijan has typically afforded significant passing opportunities thanks to a long, flat-out and DRS-assisted run from turn 19 to turn 1, so this should be an exciting race. Ferrari will look to reclaim some momentum in the championship standings another strong finish from Sainz or Leclerc. Will the red team fight back against the blue team after having no wins since Australia?

Hamilton’s presence in Montreal is uncertain, according to reports. No big surprise if you saw him get out of his car yesterday.

This is the first year since I started following F1 in 1971 that I'm not upset about missing televised races.
Mattia had better get that car sorted...and quickly or he'll join Maurizio watching F1 from the couch on Sunday evenings.
The Tifosi are not a patient crowd.
They won't tolerate that for long and their voices carry a lot of 'sway' with Maranello.
Mercedes need to get that car sorted out.
It is quickly becoming a hinderance to their ability to fight.
Lucky result... but look at how far back they were at the end of the race.
They've had lots of data collection...on different circuit surfaces... to do so.
Driving cannot be fun for either... sitting on a sheet of carbon fiber, insulated by only a thin layer of molded foam for body contouring...especially going over curbs.
The huge exposed surface area created as a result of the zero sidepod concept, allows for much more downforce....maybe too much.
Clearly, the suspension is not capable of overcoming the vertical loads at anywhere close to maximum velocity.
Look at how early the porpoising is starting on straights.
If they want to keep that concept, they're going to have to experiment with 'waffling' the floor slightly ahead of the center of pressure to disrupt and stall the airflow.
That'll create a high pressure area to equalize suspension loading.
They'll then need boundary layer reattachment at the diffuser entry point.
Reducing suction at the critical point to keep the car from bottoming...while still taking advantage of the diffuser principals will be vital, if this concept is to succeed.
It would be interesting to see them test-run that car on the original thirteen inch wheels.

maybe two Oscars? no joke if merc is smart... they start building next year's car instead of crying. The WDC won't work with this car that's for sure and problem two for LH is Russel

I think we will have to wait until next year for entertaining races and an interesting championship battle. By then the reliability issues should be more or less solved and the porpoising issues as well. This is just a transitional year for the teams with the new regulations. So I'm not following it with much interest right now.

*sigh*

I am friggin’ tired of the hate against Hamilton. You may not like the guy, but he was clearly in pain yesterday.
And I’m tired that all time somebody post a comment about Lewis. The poster is called a hater or being a racist. In my opinion he can not have this much pain and Russel is jumping on the podium. When Mercedes wants to solve the problem they only have to change the ride height till they find a proper solution thats it.

Why does everything has to be about Lewis anyways?

Who cares if he did a booboo on his back? Is he trying to make everybody forget he got beaten yet again by his teammate?

Mercedes is going full football pitch dive on this just get a handout from the FIA.

I am much more interested if Ferrari can turn this around now that they are on the backfoot.

I wrote hater because of the suggestion that LH is acting. He is not the only driver who is complaining about the consequences of porpoising, Gasly also said that the FIA needs to do something before « we all walk with canes at 30. »

The fact that Russell looked fine is no proof that LH wasn’t in pain. Two different people can react differently depending on their shape.

one is a middle aged man who came 4th, is not used to it, and still sore by being robbed of a WDC.
the other is a young man, who came 3rd, on the podium, full of adrenaline. But even he is complaining about the pain, as are other drivers.

You post a lot about Lewis. Your post drip of your irrational hatred towards him, never posts of rational discussion or evaluation. Don't be surprised if you are called a hater.

Since you are using terms like "being robbed from the WDC" you are not doing bad yourself to. This has been investigated. The outcome was a WDC (that is not Lewis). It was not robbed however, the outcome then would be very different.

FIA did not publish the full report as they said they would, wonder why?
But the parts of the report that were published, said rules were not followed but they were allowed not to, makes complete sense in a Kafkaesque world.

Max is unfortunately for him, going to have an asterixis against his first WDC through no fault of his own.

Looks like he's going to win a second this year thanks to Ferrari's implosion and Jos's tantrum :roflmao:

I also don't like lewis especially his behavior I never liked. He thinks he's Elvis Presley in a race car and then I'm worried carefully. Luckily I don't have to talk about him often… I prefer to see the younger generation racing. Merc has to solve his own problems, raise the car so that the problems are less, the whole team is due for a reset except for Russell… you won't hear him complain, his time will come. Actually felt the most sorry for Charles Leclerc

I’m still waiting for your posts with rational discussion or evaluation….

Mercedes can do 3 things:

* change the ride height
* replace Lewis by Nick the Vries
* change nothing and stop crying

I think there will be an investigation by the FIA into the porpoises... will Toto get his way again?

I honestly don't understand what Merc is hoping to achieve by continuously complaining about porpoising. Their car is fundamentally flawed, FIA can't change the regs mid season in a cost cap era when teams are already against the spending limits. So what is the solution? Do you want them to mandate ride heights? The solution is simple, raise the ride height and the problem goes away. But they are obviously not willing to do so as it slows them down.
Right, and the one thing I could see the FIA mandating is a limit on how much a car can porpoise for driver safety. I don't know how you would measure it, maybe a limit on the number of bounces over a specific G force on specific flat straight at top speed. Mercedes and every other constructor could meet that requirement, they may just lose some speed.

And if the porpoising is as hard on the driver as it appeared while LH was getting out of the car, the FIA should mandate it. Long term, that can't be good for a driver's back.

George Russell has complained about the porpoising.

and they need what they banned in '93 for what they initially banned in '83 and reintroduced for 2022
