Welcome to the 2021 Formula One Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Time to get your predications and votes in and discuss the upcoming GP!

With the new year underway, the teams return to Imola for the 2021 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton won here at the unexpected but welcome event that featured on last year's calendar, after the track made itself available to help F1 host as full a season as possible. With Alonso returning to the sport, that makes two drivers on the grid that have won at Imola, albeit 15 years apart and on different layouts.

This classic circuit can be unforgiving, with plenty of gravel traps ready to catch drivers out. While it's a fairly small track by modern F1 standards, it features plenty of long radius medium speed corners. This should make for a good test of how the teams' new challengers are coping with less rear downforce than their predecessors. To aid overtaking, the DRS zone on the main straight has been extended by 60 metres.

Friday and Saturday should be dry, although with much colder weather than the teams experienced in Bahrain. It will be interesting to see whether the cooler conditions allow any of the teams to squeeze a few more horses from their new power units. More enticingly, current forecasts suggest a good chance that rain will affect Sunday's race. It's always fun to see which way teams go on setup when they don't get to experience representative conditions before race day, or more to the point, who gets it right and who does not!

After a battle that kept us on the edge of our seats in Bahrain, the thought of Hamilton and Verstappen resuming their championship fight around a rainy Imola is a very exciting one indeed. It's a difficult one to call between them, with both having already shown top form at race one. Perhaps a deciding factor could be whether Mercedes have gotten on top of their rear stability issues yet. If they are yet to do so, and Sunday is indeed affected by rain, then that could prove challenging for the Silver Arrows.

Let us know what you're looking forward to about this weekend, and don't forget to back your favourite for the win in our poll!

Te
Terrible weekend for Bottas, but yeah he really squeezed Russell who had DRS advantage and was quicker.
Should expect a veteran to know better.
Though I agree that this wasn't a strong weekend from Valteri, I am yet to see a helicopter shot of the situation. From the onboard footage it is quite safe to say that Valteri closed the door a bit due to the kink there wich propably wasn't intentional but him lining up for the chicane on a normal trajectory. Next to that there was clearly more than one car width room. My take on the crash is that it's more or less a misunderstanding of the drivers with both of them misjudging the situation. It's allways easy to say that one guy closed the door, but it's quite clear that Russel tried to dive bomb Valteri on the outside forgetting that kink and expecting the place to be served on a silver plate. I am sorry to say this but at that level you 1st) of all can't expect that other drivers move to the side and 2nd) you need to make sure that your move is safe. Having DRS and being quicker is no garantue for overtaking someone if they decide to make it difficult for you. Trying to make the move stick on wet grass was just the icing on the cake for a perfect example of a rookie error. And as much as I can see the talent in George Russel, he is for some reason very often involved in such last-minute-head through-the-wall-actions that lead to accidents wich is not good for someone who is in his third year allready. He isn't a rookie anymore.

At the end of the day he wasn't even next to Bottas when he decided to make the move stick. Wich is a no-go considering the speeds that they are traveling at. Bottas not expecting the "rookie" to make such a stupid move and forgetting the kink was the other fault. So it's more or less 50/50.

The rest of the race was a bit wierd. At this point it's safe to say that they should revisit that red flag rule. After that mistake Hamilton had no business on being on the podium just due to the fact that he was gifted a full lap and several track positions due to laped cars. And even though I am not a big Red Bull and verstappen fan, this one was well deserved.

About Russel crash after watching all available footage, Bottas didn't do anything wrong. Russel drove off the track and hit Bottas. Russel made mistake and blames Bottas, who had nothing to do about Russel miss manowar. That's it.

Completely agree with you there. From footage you can see Bottas was following the dry line from the kink to the Tamburello chicane and wasn't expecting Russel (or anyone else) to be there and/or he was not looking in his mirror and/or Russel came in too fast for him to react, which he did but too late.

Imola delivered, like a proper prima-donna, a truly dramatic race.

Max did what he had to do, did it with prowess and made it look simple. He managed a fantastic start and took no prisoners at turn one. A rough call but that's the kind of scraps we want to see between these two, right? Very promising for the championship fight. Lewis was too eager on still wet conditions and made a silly mistake. He did however make a fantastic comeback to P2. Whether he had a much better car than everyone he passed or not, it still takes a lot of driving and mental skills to come back from beaching yourself like that. It reminded me of Senna's recovery at Suzuka in '89... the same "I can still come back" attitude. Class.

Lando was truly in form, showing what that McLaren is capable of, they made the right call to swap cars when they did to give him the free air he needed and he delivered with a podium. Checo on the other hand was a victim of his own mistakes due to pressure and expectations. Surely he didn't benefit from the soft tyre because it was more slippery, hence his spin, and degraded faster so he couldn't make a proper comeback at the end. A shame because with Bottas out Red Bull could have hauled big points to jump Mercedes on the charts... I'm sure he got a peptalk from Helmut. Not like he needs it because he knows already, you saw that in his interviews. What I really liked, despite his mistakes, was Tsunoda's feisty driving... "It was a shame that I spun on turn two when I was trying to overtake Lewis." Now, that's the right attitude from Yuki, just give him a few years.

That's my 2 cents. A great race, more like this one please! :D
