Renault R8 Gordini
The R8 (model R1130) was released in June 1962 and was based on the Renault Dauphine with which it shared its basic architecture and its 2,270mm wheelbase. The style, closely following that of the first prototype produced, at unusually short notice, by Philippe Charbonneaux, was fashionably boxy, however while the Renault 8 was actually 30mm narrower than the Dauphine, the manufacturer was able to install thick cushioned front seats that were actually each 60mm wider. The R8's engine followed the pioneering example of the recently introduced Renault 4 by incorporating a sealed for life cooling system. A distinctive innovation on the French produced cars was the fitting of four-wheel disc brakes, a first for a saloon/sedan car of this size.
A more powerful model, the 8 Major (model R1132), was released in 1964, featuring an 1108 cc engine developing 50PS. A still more powerful version, the 8 model R1134 Gordini, was also released that year, with a tuned engine of the same capacity but developing 90PS. The Gordini was originally available only in blue, with two stick-on white stripes. In late 1965 R1134 was replaced with the R8 Gordini model R1135. body got stronger and included two additional headlights, engine upgraded to a 1255cc, got additional second fuel tank and 5 speed stronger gearbox. 1255cc unit rated at 100PS. Later on 1108cc engine returned to production, most likely due competition that Simca Rallye was causing. Renault 8 S had same four headlight body as R1135 and was faster version of late R8 Major 1100, offering 60hp in street tune.
In Racing R1134 was proven successful beating the original Cooper S with 1071cc engine, as it was planned. Unfortunately to Renault, BMC launched 1275cc Cooper S soon after the R1134. Development of R1135 launched pretty soon, logically as the factory as well as the privateers started to experiment with overboring the block close to the 1300cc class limit. In 1965 Tour de Corse, Group 5 1293cc R1134 with lots of weight reduction parts won the rally easily and it came obvious that there would be potential for higher powered model. As said earlier, the R1135 launched in late 1965. The street version however had 1255cc engine as the 1293cc was thought to be too dangerous on public roads. This claim was supported the fact that at least in Nordic Countries, R1135 was available only for buyers with valid racing or rallying license.
Another thing that greatly accelerated the race tune development of R8 Gordini was the two small GT builders; Alpine as well as René Bonnet Djet used the mechanicals of R8 series. due homologation and racing regulations this caused small batch of special build R8 Gordinis coming out, like 1967 1440cc and 1968 1293cc with DOHC head. First one was originally designed for Alpine rallying effort, but few Group 5 Gordinis had same engine. Latter one again was ment to power Alpine A210 for their Le Mans effort. However as the Alpine became Renault's official racing team and Alpines move to use R16 mecahnicals, the development of Gordinis were left a side.
As this car falls between the classification limits of GTL, 5 different physics versions are included. R1135 with it's release date very late 1965 (homologation for Group 2 was not finished until Feb 1966.) is especially problematic as it would go to TC-76 if to be 100% exact with rules. However as 1293cc Gordinis were ran in 1965 already, we have decided to bend the rules a bit here.
TC-65 cars are based on 1963-1969 Group 2 rules and TC-76 counterparts again Group 2 that started in 1970. Biggest difference is weight. 1970 Gr2 rules were more liberal using fiberglass panels and so the latter cars are not that heavy. Also as the 1970 rules stated that 100 examples of racing part had to be made, gearbox ratios is much more liberal, giving more optimal ratios.
