Pause/Unpause with a Steering Wheel

Pause/Unpause with a Steering Wheel 1.1

I thought I would share my recent discovery with you – the Pause/Unpause with a Steering Wheel function in AC

v1.1 - In v1.0 I missed the fact the Pause menu layouts differ between game modes. This update covers that, at least the best way I see suitable in this method.

For those who want to get right to the point there is a TL;DR section right below.
For those who want a detail description there is a DETAILS section in the attached instruction.
And for those who want a little BACKGROUND I encourage to stay awhile and listen J

Emulating the Pause is achievable in a couple of ways – all use the Escape key. Emulating the Resume button – this is the real deal. I bet this has been bugging everyone since the Early Access phase. I was one of many to believe this will get fixed in the final version. Well, we all make mistakes. I did my fair share of searching and own investigation but there is no console (~) available nor any sort of cvarlist whatsoever. This is not the end of the world but still annoying like hell. I was being forgiving as Kunos was doing great job with all the updates and DLCs but the moment they released the console version I was struck. Since they managed to rework the interface to work on console (I assume console users can pause/unpause with a wheel?) in my eyes there was nothing to hold them up with making the fix (not UI overhaul as for consoles) for the Resume button on PC, was there? My despair was beyond acceptance so I involved a 3rd party software, used some brains and voilà.

I managed this on a tandem of Logitech G29 and the Logitech Gaming Software (the new software, not the old Logitech Profiler). To be plainly honest I have not tested this on my DFGT nor with the Logitech Profiler nor with any other tandem BUT I believe this method should work with any wheel with some programmable buttons and a software that enables scripting keyboard sequences/combinations.

TL;DR

The idea is to use a mouse emulator that would essentially click the Resume button like we do manually.

Mouse Recorder
  • Use a Mouse Recorder freeware software
  • Record a macro to simulate mouse cursor move onto and click the Resume button in AC
  • Save the macro file somewhere
  • Set a hot-key combination in the Mouse Recorder for playing loaded macros
Logitech Gaming Software
  • Assign one button to equal Esc key
  • Assign another button to open the previously saved macro file
  • Assign the final button to equal the hot-key combination previously set in Mouse Recorder
AC
  • Launch the game, load the track, leave the menus
  • Press the button serving as Esc
  • Press the button launching macro – this is a one-timer
  • Press the button serving as the Play hot-key – this Resumes the game
  • MOVE the mouse to the top-bottom e.g. corner. It WILL stay there no matter how many times we invoke the Esc/Resume cycle so it only has to be done once, the first time.

It all takes 2 seconds so you will manage before a race starts without any problems.

It is not necessary to assign the “open macro” button, you could simply run a shortcut to the macro file before launching AC but seriously, would you remember to do it every time? I thought I would. I was wrong.

The attached archive consists of:
  • AC_Resume macro that needs editing if the screen resolution =/= Full HD
  • Instruction file which I strongly encourage to familiarize with since this is where the details are described
As you can see in the video both the Pause menu and Resume button were invoked with steering wheel buttons and not with actual mouse movements keeping your hands on the wheel.

As always in such cases some points covered here may or may not work on individual machines. If they do not please leave a comment, we will see if we can sort them out. If you know a better way or see some improvement to this method also please leave a comment.

That is something I have always wanted, but you're gonna have to come up with a better install method. Looking forward to it.
Hey thanks for the effort, but you can just use the software Xpadder to bind any key or combination of keys from your keyboard on any button you want on your steering wheel device (works for my g27) ;) Hope it will give you more possibilities ;)

Thanks! I didn't want to use another 3rd party software since every. This is for Logitech wheels but I assume other manufacturers also provide similar soft for their wheels. Would the Xpadder emulate the mouse movement and a click?
