(please note that screenshot is from my slightly modified version - the actual car has different wheels, an original front without the big "Ford" and of course start numbers)

...huge fun to drive - and sportier than you think!

FORD FALCON FUTURA SPRINT

History

Encouraged by the successes of the '63 Rally Falcons, Ford decided to centre their rally efforts on the newly restyled Falcon "Sprint" through the mid-year of 1964 until the new Mustang model was introduced.

The '64 Monte Carlo Rally Falcons were powered by the new high performance 289 motor rated at 305 horsepower. This was the same hi-po motor that was to achieve similar racing glory in early Cobras, GT 40s and Mustangs.

The differential was Ford's bullet proof 9-inch type that was borrowed from the Galaxie. The differential was "limited slip" and outfitted with the larger rear drum brakes and axle from the Galaxie.

The '64 Rally Falcon weighed only 2,156 pounds, almost a thousand pounds less than the stock Sprint.

The Monte Carlo Rally

The unexpected success of the Falcons in the '63 event, meant that most people were prepared to bet on a repeat performance. However the French who arranged the rally had also understood how serious Ford were about winning. The idea of an American car winning the Rally was definitely not to their taste. A new rule was invented, with the effect that the larger the cylinder volume of the car, the faster it had to be driven to win!

Once again Bosse Ljungfeldt in the Falcon won all the speed runs but the new rule meant that this just resulted in a second place behind Paddy Hopkirk in a Mini Cooper.

Note: Bosse Ljungfeldt made record times on all the speed runs, the last of which were beaten in 1982 by Hannu Mikkola in an Audi Quattro. Until then, the Renault Alpines, Stratos and Escorts had all failed to beat Ljungfeldt's times.
