Datsun 240Z & 240ZG
Officially launched in 1969 and known as the Fairlady 240Z in Japan it was suggested on the launch of the car that for the export models they drop the “Fairlady” name, the thinking being that it was not the appropriate image for a muscular sports car, so most of the world knows it as the Datsun 240Z.
It has been called the most successful sports car of all time. It was the car that many car enthusiasts had been waiting for and thought they should have had by then that is, a GT car with a large displacement engine, fully independent suspension; disk brakes with a good enough build and trim quality that it could be used everyday, at a price a normal person could afford.
Nissan sold 1000s of them.
Nissan wanted the car to be raced as this was a good way to boost sales. Early versions were raced in Japan with the smaller 2liter straight 6 engine and soon they homologated a special long nose version known as the 240ZG. These cars along with wider fender flairs were raced in Japan with the standard 2.4liter 6cyl engine and up to up to 2.9 liters in the GTS-II class.
Because the primary market that the Z was aimed at was America Nissan supported the American racing efforts right from the start.
The 240Z would come to dominate the IMSA GTU (under 2.5liter class) in both short and long nose configuration, beating the 911 and winning the championship in 1974, 75 and 76.
In SCCA Club racing the 240Z it would go on to win many championships and was raced for years.
Nissan would also win the under 2500cc class at Lemans in 1975 in a car badged as a 260Z but using the 2.4 liter engine to comply with the rules making the car basically a 240Z
In less than 2.5 liter racing trim a 240Z and 260Z are for all practical purposes the same car.
