Whats the best resolution for Race 07?

Discussion in 'RACE 07 - Official WTCC Game' started by William Yunck, Jun 16, 2008.

  1. I have a 1680 x 1050 22" monitor, If I configure race at that resolution the cars don't look right, I tried 1280 x 1050 and they are too "stretched out" they look too scruntched. what resolution was it meant to be viewed in? Would it be different for each sized Monitor?
  2. try 1280x1024 (4:3)
i use 1024x768(4:3) and all looks fine
  3. It's not an issue of the monitor size, but the native aspect ratio of the display device. 1680x1050 is 16x10 which has become fairly common for computer monitors. Not sure why because it's not consistent with anything else that I can think of... Widescreen TVs are 16x9 and traditional computer monitors/TVs are 4x3.

For optimal display purposes you need to have Windows matched to the native aspect ratio of the monitor and Race to match that. I would think it would look ok in Race, but if not you can try this to see if you like it better:

Since your monitor is 1680x1050 try the closest standard resolution to either 4x3 or 16x9 to see if you like it better.
4x3 = 1400 x1050 and 16x9 = 1680x945. You may end up with black bars vertically or horizontally, but the aspect ratio will be correct.

I'm using a widescreen 1080p lcd tv which is 16x9 and it lookes fine.
  4. That seems strange William, I have the same monitor and I use 1680 by 1050 for the monitor and Race 07 resolution, and the cars look ok to me. ????
  5. have to agree with Warren, 22" 1680x1050 - cars look great and it's nice not to have to sit so far back to get the mirrors in now! :)
  6. I had a 22" for a while and i used the resolution 1680x1050 and everything looked great :)
    So i think 1680x1050 is the best resolution for a 22" :)

No problems here with my old 22" monitor @1680x1050.
Also no problems with the 26" @1900x1200.
  8. For my 16:10 monitor 1440x900 or 1920x1200 is correct. On 1680x1050 the picture is stretched too.

    its gotta be 1920x1080 :D
  10. Warren or Skipys, could one of you post a screenshot i am curious to see if it is the same look as mine.
Here is a screenshot of forcing 1600x1200 which is the 4;3 ratio, does it look normal to you all? It looks fairly real to me - or is the car wider than real life?

Thanks to all who have helped here also.

  11. @William --- looks fine to me. What does 1680x1050 look like?
  12. Your screenshot looks ok to me. :thumb:
I'll try to get you a similar one from my screen using the Seat.
  13. OK, I posted one above at the 1680x1050 native resolution. The car gets narrower or taller, which ever way you like to look at it. It might not be the best view of it, I can try a straight on shot it would show it better.
you can see it best just comparing the thumbnails.
  14. Here are a few screenies from my monitor.
    All using 1680 by 1050

  15. william your 2nd pic looks stretched the first one looks fine
  16. There isn't a huge difference between them, but I would assume that if your monitor is native at 1680 by 1050 and you have the game at the same resolution, then it should be correct. That was my theory anyway.
Maybe I have become used to my settings but they look ok to me.
  17. They both look fine from here, but I had to squint as you're a bit far away... :D

When you were running in 1600x1200 I'm not really sure what your true aspect ratio is. 1600x1200 for sure is 4x3, but your monitor is 16x10 and the image is filling the entire screen. So, even though you are telling Windows to use a 4x3 resolution it is scaling it in some way to fill your entire monitor. My guess is that it is taking 1600 pixels and stretching to 1680 and taking 1200 pixels and clipping/compressing to 1050.

I think anything that looks good to your eyes should work fine, but if you want to see which of the various aspect ratios you like best then try comparing native 1680x1050 (16x10) with 1400x1050 (4x3) with 1680x945 (16x9) to see which you like best. These are all pretty standard.

However, because you have a 16x10 monitor you will need to see vertical black bars for the 4x3, because you are losing 280 pixels there, and horizontal black bars for the 16x9, because you are losing 105 pixels there, to see the true aspect ratio. Otherwise Windows is re-scaling the image and you are seeing something else.
  18. Warren, for some reason your pics look better to me.
  19. OK here is a direct comparison of as close to the same spot on the track as I could come, they are maybe 1 second apart Top is at 1680x1050 and the bottom is at 1600x1200. It is still difficult to see here, but the top car appears narrower to me. It is really obvious in game. I don't think simbin added more scenery for widescreens so the computer makes up for this by adding or subtracting pixels. I guess the real question is what resolution did simbin intend it to be viewed in.
