Turning up the heat this summer at the RaceDepartment iRacing club

In May and June we cranked up the heat a little with a number of firsts for the iRacing club here at RaceDepartment. Our first night race, our first Indy 500 and this weekend we roll out the Ford Mustang FR500S for the first time at Road Atlanta. These events have been crammed in between our Star Mazda Series which runs its last two races this month with everything still to play for at the top of the championship table. For July and August there’s going to be no let up to the action with events running every weekend. This series of races will take us up to one of the biggest releases for iRacing since it first opened its doors – the highly anticipated v2.0 release scheduled for August.

We kick off July with the blisteringly fast Williams F1 at the world famous Silverstone track. This is our first trip to the historic British track and it’s the perfect playground for the Williams F1 which was introduced into the iRacing service last October. From Silverstone we travel to Sebring for our second night race, this time we’ll be driving the Ford Mustang FR500S for a race with an all American flavour. At the beginning of the year we ran a six round series in the Mazda MX-5 which proved to be very popular among our drivers who enjoyed close door to door racing in this very nimble car. It’s time to jump back into the MX-5 in July and we’ll be taking it to the recently released Okayama International Circuit in Japan.

From Okayama we travel back to Europe to one of the most famous tracks loved by motor sports fans worldwide – Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. It’s used for many forms or motorsports but is probably best known for its place on the F1 calendar and it’s the Williams F1 that we will be racing around this historic venue. To round off July we’re keeping the speeds high and the racing intense with our first NASCAR race. It’s something we’ve been looking forward to organising and so in July we’ll be taking on Charlotte Motor Speedway in the Chevrolet Silverado trucks. Charlotte has recently hosted the Coca-Cola 600 race and also the high stakes All-Star Race where this year’s winner Carl Edwards walked away with a cool $1,203,000 in prize money.

July boasts a high octane line-up but there will be no slowing down as we head into August. We travel to another famous European track which has been host to a number of high profile racing series, Formula 1, DTM, A1GP and the GP Masters of F3. Winners at this track include Sir Stirling Moss, Juan Manuel Fangio, James Hunt, Alain Prost and Niki Lauda, I am of course referring to Circuit Park Zandvoort. For a track so steeped in history it only seemed fitting that we run an F1 event here so at the beginning of August we’ll be taking the Williams F1 to Zandvoort. The second week in August brings another new first for the iRacing club at RaceDepartment. The Skip Barber is regarded by many to be the car that handles most like the ’67 Formula 1 era cars from Papyrus’s much loved Grand Prix Legends racing simulation so for the first time in an RDiR event we’ll be rolling this car out at Okayama International Circuit.

After Okayama we’re re-visiting Silverstone in its shorter ‘International’ configuration for a race in the Mazda MX-5’s. This shortened version of the track is perfect for the close racing we’ve seen so far when using the MX-5 in RDiR events. Our last race in August is still to be confirmed. This is because in August iRacing is due to undergo a huge update including a new tire model for all cars, a new aero model, sound system and the track we want to use for this event – Suzuka. We hope by the end of August this track will be released for an F1 event.

That’s our line-up for the next two months; we hope you’re excited as much as we are by these events. Over the next few months we’ll be planning further events and also our autumn race series so stay tuned to the RD iRacing forums for more information. See you all on track soon!
