SEASON 11 Race 1 SPA RACE REPORT

Q 12th
Slow but there was a lot of people on the track.

R 8th
I started with a full tank and an high wing setup. Passed Steeve at the hairpin and then tried to stay in the slipstream of the faster cars in front (Jim, Tim, etc.). I couldn't do much in the straights, but it was easy to make some time back in the straight. Kept the 9th place (between Jim and Anthony) from lap 3 to lap 9, and pitted at the end of lap 9 for a fresh set of tyres.

Exited the pits in 16th, with new tyres and half a tank, it was now time to attack with optimal performances, before the rain hits. Passed Alberto and Kurt at Les Combes in lap 11 and Valter at Les Fagnes in lap 13. After that I was quite alone on the track, in 9th place, but Peter was slowly gaining on me. He nearly ran into me at lap 17 at Les Combes braking, just when rain started to wet the track, and he finally passed me at lap 19 at the same place. The rain was harder and my tyres were beginning to cool down just after that, so I decided to pit for a set of wet tyres. It was my scheduled 2nd pit stop anyway, since my full tank was nearly empty, so this tyre change didn't affected my strategy. Peter was also pitting at the same moment, and my pit crew made a miracle, allowing me to exit the pit just in front of Peter, at the 8th spot, with Anthony just in front of me.

I was a lot faster than him but passing him in the straight was not possible because of my low top speed, and passing him in the turn was also complicated because of the swaying of his car in the rain. The fight didn't last long since I made a small mistake at Blanchimont and Peter passed me again. Hopefully I could take Anthony slipstream a few moments later and passed him at Les Combes braking (lap 21) and quickly gained on Peter. He made a mistake at the Bus Stop so I could take the 7th spot. Shortly after, the rain stopped and my tyres were beginning to overheat, so I pitted at once for a set of slicks at the end of lap 23. That made me lose 2 places but I was then much faster than Peter and Anthony in front and gained on them with something like 1s per minute. A quick calculation told me that passing them was possible, but in the end I could only fight with Peter in lap 28. It took me the whole lap to pass him, since he defended well his place, and with all those seconds lost in the fight Anthony was to far away for me in the final lap, so that made finish at the 8th place.

Thanks everyone for this great race, CU at Singapore.

First of all big congrats to Dino for his 1st PrestoGP win and also big respect for Guus finishing 2nd in his first event.

Qualy (1st)

Due to the rainy practice session there was no late preparation for the dry qualy conditions. So I thought I better accept the disadvantage of little more fuel but to get more confidence and a second chance by doing 2 timed laps in a row. So I entered the track having maybe 10 cars in front and a few behind of me. "Cruising" up Kemel straight and through Les Combes the feeling grew that there would never be a clear track in any of my attempts, so I aborted, reduced fuel and started a super pole lap. I pushed hard during the outlap to refresh the feeling quickly and tryed to be smooth and not to overdrive it in the timed lap. It surprisingly resulted in a 2:02:2xx, only 0,2 away from my PB, so I was happy with it. ;)

Race (3rd)

Strategy: 10 laps 65 liters / 10 laps 65 liters / 9 laps 55 liters

My start was very well so I was able to take T1 on my own unfortunately I didn't take it perfectly so David was able to catch me on the Kemel straight, because of a lower wing setup. I tryed hard to defend, when we drove side by side through the first two corners of Les Combes but through the 3rd one I cliped the inside curb which nearly made me spin. I catched it but lost P1 one to david and had Dino close to my tail now.

Lap 2, same place, I was still in a bad mood about my lap 1 mistake and now Dino slip streamed me up the hill after Eau Rouge. Again I tryed to keep it side by side through Les Combes but over braked the first right hander. So I pushed Dino off the track. :( I let him pass then and Peter had passed both of us. So it was on Dino (3rd) to chase Peter (2nd).

Peter defended hard and Dino couldn't get through and after 2 laps or so I took advantage of their battle and passed Dino through Les Combes. I bet Dino wasn't unhappy to watch how Peter became a hard nut to crack for me. I had one of the greatest and closest fights ever for a few laps but wasn't able to get passed Peter. He was on lower wings and my higher down force was only good enough to compensate the dirty air through the curvy middle sector. So I could only push hard and hope for a mistake.

After a few laps then Peter had a not so good exit out of the left hander before Pouhon (quick left hander) so I managed to squeeze me through in P2 at Pouhon. (Did we touch there Peter?) Braking for the following right-left chicane Peter behind me over shot it a little and pushed me off the track. I didn't receive damage but lost a few positions (not sure how many). Peter waited for me to pass him and apologized later, so all good for me - can happen in the heat ;).

The first stop came closer and I was close to get Tim and a group in front of him, so I decided to pit one lap earlier not to lose time in big battles. I think a little later Tim and a few others pitted too and I could gain a few positions, also in one or two overtakes here and there but I don't remember well.

When the 2nd stop was to come closer I was slightly closing up on David. (Don't remember about Guus' position at this time) The rain slightly started and conditions became more tricky over time. In the second last lap before I had to pit it it rained so much I decided to pit and take wets. David was right in front of me and did the same. Stop was ok but somehow David had gained 7 seconds and Guus appeared between us. So the new order after the last stop was Dino (1st), David (2nd), Guus (3rd), I (4th) and following drivers.

Guus and I clsoed the gap to David and Guus made pressure on him. After a few laps David made a mistake and we both slipped through. My gap to Guus varied from 1 - 5 seconds or so and I wasn't realy having a chance to attack. Through the last two laps I pushed like hell to get close to Guus and force him into a mistake. Indeed I closed the gap but Guus did well to bring his P2 home and I finished in P3.

Finally I was somehow disappointed about P3 but on the other hand it was a very interesting race with a tough qualy, great battles, rainy conditions and many emotions, so what else could I ask for? ;)

In sum it was a nice season opener after all the trouble we had before. Big thx to Nico, RD and all the gentle racers here.

C U in the far east of the world...

Grats Dino, Guus and Reik!

It was fun to watch the replay :)

Tanks all for a thrilling evening!

Daniel created the perfect weather. I loved every second.

One stop, 95/90 L fuel. Wing 16/20. Started on slicks. Pitstop on 15th lap. Had to go in for wet on 16th lap.

Q 16

R 13

The first lap was eventful. I had to go off in Radillion to avoid Richard and Bob. I didn’t see them spinning first, Alex blocked my front view a bit. It all went well. I could pass them on the right side.

On my one stop strategy I had the good fortune to race many drivers. Kurt, Bob Laube, Alberto Casado, Nicolai, Guus, Nicolas, Reik and Henrik.

Sorry Anthony for reentering in front of you in Pouhon. Lucky it was you.

Nice fight with Valerio. On lap 25 he finally overtook me. He is a wet specialist...hmmm.

Good battle with Alberto last few laps of the race. I lost a position there. Better luck next time :)

Thanks Nicolai, Daniel and all involved!

Better late than never for a small(?) report, right? A bit unclear about the details after this long time tho (makes the report even shorter? but it became pretty long anyway, sorry) :)

First: Grats Dino to your first win! Even more impressive since I slowed you down. And Guus made a sterling rookie effort

Q: 5th (I think)
I was greatly surprised I got that place. I am usually more like Jenson Button when it comes to qualy - better slightly safer than very sorry. Funny thing was that even I was chased by a car closer than 10m in many corners, that was the fastest of the 2 qualy laps (if I remember correctly...)

I would however not disturb a car during its hotlap, that should go for everyone, I must say.

R: 9th (or 8th? lol)
You could almost think I was teaming up with the one in 1st place during lap 2 and onward, since I suddenly became so interested in defending my 2nd place - but hey, it was such a fun battle I wont remember for ages! :D I guess I really managed to compress the whole pack behind me. However, after the bump into Reik which made me let several pass and Reik, the challenge became different - just to get experience about how the f3000-car changes during weight loss and tire degradation. Oh, and learning to keep focused during this tiresome analysing of the new-to-me formula car, gah.

Strategy-wise: 2 stops was the more secure way for me I thought. Next race I will reevaluate that one, and analyze how wetness on and off-path works together with the f3000-tires grip-limit. You could say I got much experience in driving with overheated wets and the feeling of getting passed at the last (or 2nd to last) lap  ;)

Race again tomorrow! Now off to run some 15, 20 and 30min stints to generate some data. Lets see tho if all this analyzing leads to some progress :geek:
