RaceDepartment Historic Grand Prix Season 8 Round 8
Welcome back to Round 8 of the RDHGP S8, and the final event of the season. I feel quite pleased with how Gellerasen went, feedback was mostly positive about the track and how it drove. We get quite a contrast going from the shortest track of the season to the longest, and a huge change in character as well.

As is customary, this is a double length, weekend run event. In case anyone doesn’t know, we run this on a weekend to allow timezones ahead of GMT to not be as adversely affected during the working/school week. The 200km distance means that all bar one of the League vehicles must stop for fuel to make the end of the race, and then there is the factor of new tyres being available. Some may opt to not stop and nurse the car through to the end, some will opt for fuel only to shorten the stop and have to nurse the tyres that need to go twice as far as a normal League race, and the rest will take both fuel & tyres and be able to push as hard as a normal 100km race. It’s always a fine balancing act between the strategies and it throws up some unusual battles as people encounter people on different strategies throughout the course of the race.

Round 8 takes us 1040 miles due South from Karlskoga in Sweden to Northern Italy, and the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola.

Circuit Notes
Situated 40km East of Bologna, the circuit was originally named for Enzo Ferrari’s late son Dino who died in the 1950’s, but then he himself was added after his death in 1988. Imola held the San Marino Grand Prix for many years, and ran the 1980 iteration of the Italian Grand Prix while Monza was undergoing refurbishment. It is one of few major international circuits to run in an anti-clockwise direction.

The 500lb gorilla in the corner that no-one wants to mention is the meeting in 1994 where Rubens Barrichello was injured in Friday Practice, Roland Ratzenberger was killed in Saturday Qualifying, and Ayrton Senna was killed during the race on Sunday.

In 2007 the circuit was dropped from the F1 Calendar, but it has now been reconstructed and is beginning to host major events again having been given the “1” rating from the FIA. No F1 has yet been announced, but the Le Mans Series 6 Hours of Imola is a step in the right direction.

A lap of Imola starts on the long S/F straight, through the gentle curve just past the line, allowing the cars to get up a good head of steam, even on the opening lap, so we should see some separation by the time we stand on the brakes for the first complex – Tamburello.

T1aL is protected on the inside by tyre pillars, and on the outside by a slippery sand trap. This is one of the corner complexes where it pays to take your medicine in this first section. Once through the first part, you can get gently on the accelerator and then feather for T1bR, again avoiding the potentially race-ending tyre barrier on the inner apex guarding the cut. Once out of here, and pointing in roughly the right direction, get aggressively on the throttle and sweep through T1cL under full gas, and out onto the straight beyond.

After the decent length straight you approach the next corner, which is a bit more of a classical -but widely spaced- left-right chicane – Villeneuve. Hard on the brakes for T2aL, enter it from as wide as possible, carrying some speed through the first part, and then a dab of brakes for T2bR, and then try not to drift too far left on the exit, as the kerb is slippery, and the grass beyond it won’t slow you in time to prevent you hitting the fence beyond.

Accelerate hard out of Villeneuve, under the footbridge, and then stand on the brakes hard for T3L – Tosa. A slow tight turn, braking distances and lines will be very varied, so caution needed through here. It exits uphill, and is quite slippery, so care is required when to stand on the accelerator, especially when your tyres are worn.

Hard on the gas once you are settled, uphill and keeping right over the blind crest, and then brake for T4L – Piratella. A double apexed, medium speed corner in which the outer edge on the first apex is guarded by sandy grass and a close wall, and the inside kerbs on the second apex are bumpy. Get this corner right, and you can head onto the downhill straight that follows with a big old smile on your face.

Hammering downhill you see the next corner ahead - T5R - and as it’s a downhill entry you’ll need to brake earlier and longer than normal, drop a gear, throw the nose across the apex, and then stand hard again on the brakes and get settled for T6R – Acque Minerale.

Acque Minerale is tight, the turn apex is at the bottom of the dip, and it exits steeply uphill. Get the nose in as tight as possible, do your turning, and then get on the gas on the way out, trying not to slither across the bumpy kerbs and run off areas – which incidentally are NOT considered racing surface.

Full acceleration up the hill, and over the gentle crest as the track flattens out, going under the trees until you hit the hard braking point for Variante Alta. A close, classic chicane, get your braking done well enough to flick the nose right into the T7aR first section, avoid the car unsettling kerbs, flick it back left again almost immediately through T7bL, and then squeeze on the power through the exit, avoiding running wide over some more nasty kerbs and onto the downhill straight that follows.

Keep hard on the gas down hill, take the right-hander curve that goes under the bridge, and then get hard, hard on the brakes for the tricky Rivazza.

Rivazza is another double apex turn, with the topography making them very different. The high speed downhill approach to T8aL extends the braking zone, the off camber profile makes it difficult to get the nose in, and the bumpy kerb and waiting , slippery grass on the exit need to be factored in as well. Get through there safely, and the entire character of the section changes. You can be aggressive through T8bL, taking a late apex and stamping on the gas onto the uphill straight that it opens onto.

Hard acceleration uphill, round the slight right-hand curve that then flattens before you get hard on the brakes again. Carrying straight on, you have the pit entry, which is actually quite a fast approach. Before that though, and guarded by tyre bales and aggressive cut warnings, you have the final turn – Variante Bassa.

Brake early for T9aL, and get off the brakes early as well, to make sure that you make the turn nice and tight around the inner tyres. Flick the nose right for T9bR, avoiding the inner tyres, squeezing on the gas, trying not to drift too wide across the kerb and into the Cut Warning, and hit the S/F line at almost full chat and another lap of Imola.

Just a reminder that this 200km finale is this coming Saturday 4th Feb

Well just been on the server with ??? (not saying) and at my fastest pace will be lapped 4 times tonight, so I have made a few changes to my setup and if I can smooth out my cornering and acceleration to make my tyres last until lap 28 (big ask) I am gonna go for a no stopper. I will still be lapped 4 times by the leaders but it's a challenge. See you all tonight for this fuel and tyres saving extravaganza.

I was lapped twice, but it was fun. Spent most of the race on my own, though I had fun and frustration chasing Jack. I'd get right behind him as we raced up the hills, but no way could I get by through the corners. Predrag had the opposite problem trying to get past me, until I dropped into first going into Piratella :(. That was my only major off in the race, with a couple of minor ones as I outbraked myself through aque minerale.

Excellent race, well done to everyone for finishing a tough race. It was an excellent season too, so a big thank you to Stuart for all the hard work.:D

Managed to keep it smooth and steady and didn't pit. Last 8 laps were hard battling to pass catch and pass Norman with tyres smashed, but in the end probably finished where I would have done if i had gone eyeballs out for the full race.

Disaster early on. Jack had a slower last chicane exit than me, so I thought I could squeeze by on the inside. My turning wasn't tight enough, and the result...

Sorry Jack. From the replay, I saw it was quite an impact too. Haven't driven the Abarth too much, hope it wasn't too much damage :(

Pitted very early, as soon as I knew I could get to the end with a full tank. Didn't change tires, so it was a quickie. Not that it really mattered.

Still, somehow caught up with the merry bunch consisting of Predrag, Jack and Tim. 4 of us were trying to get by each other. Well, 3 of us actually. Jack was ahead, and Predrag, Tim and myself were busy. Predrag had a couple of offs, and I had a couple attempts of passing Tim. One was even successful (well, he made a mistake :D), while others were... not successful.

We all carried on for a couple of laps. Was close behind Tim before the last chicane, I started braking a little later, and got a biiiit too close for my liking, so I quickly pressed the pedal harder, and did a nice perpendicular slide through the grass

And of course, an obligatory fail while being lapped. Outbraked myself, and went through the sand, Stuart had to take evasive action. Sorry about that.

My left leg/knee started to hurt in the later parts of the race, for the first time. So I was looking forward to the fast bits, so I could stretch it :D

I wasn't 4 seconds off pace (from people around me that is), and had some racing, so it was a good final race in the Lancia. I guess I was starting to get the hang of it near the end :D

Congrats to Dmytro for the huge win, and to Ross for the title.
Thanks to Stuart for the excellent work, was an enjoyable experience, as always. Hope to see you all in Season 9

Bit of a hectic start to last night's race, but very entertaining! As we went green, Dmytro disappeared up the road using the TVR's grunt, while i was swamped by the quick Abarths of Thommo & Predrag, and then as we all bunched up into the first chicane, i had Bob and Jay up my trumpet as well.

So on lap 1 i was down in 6th place but had a great time trying to work my way up to 2nd again, although i did end up heading off into the gravel at the first chicane while side-by-side with Predrag, then exited just behind Jay after Bob & Predrag came together. (i presume) Once i was in clear air i drove the wheels off the elite but was still regularly 1s off Dmytro's pace, and with a pit-stop still to come there was no chance of catching the TVR at all. I also thought the race would only be 40 laps instead of 41, so ended up heading to the pits on lap 40 for a second splash n dash! I made quite a few silly errors in this race as well, so i was a bit disappointed with that, but only required a few points so took it easy in the final third of the race.

Congrats on the win Dmytro, great racing Bob, Thommo, Predrag & Jay, and many thanks for another good season of racing in RDHGP Thommo!

Well what a great nights racing & a fitting end to another GTL league season. It's just a shame I could not participate in all the rounds.

First things first, Well done to Ross for securing the RDHGP title & some top driving. Also thanks to Thommo for another great league & for all his efforts putting it all together so us mere mortals can participate.

Now down to the race itself, after a great qualifing the race got under way. I thought I got a good start only to find that Thommo & Predrag got better ones. Into T1 was a little hairy as Thommo got pushed wide & I just managed to squeeze by Ross. Now running behind Thommo with Jay & Ross behind the battle commenced. Thommo was always quicker out of the corners so I knew I had my work cut out to get by him but I had to push as Jay & Ross were right on my tail. Over the next few laps I swapped position with Jay, nice driving mate, while trying to find a way by Thommo. It wasn't until Thommo went wide that I manged to get by but now had to chase down Jay while trying to keep Ross behind me. I caught & passed Jay leaving him & Ross to fight it out & set about closing the gap to Predrag. Ross got by Jay & closed my down, then I went wide so he got by but I closed the gap down back to Jay & got by again. Then it all went a little Pete Tong going into T1 as Predrag lost it & I unfortuately made slight contact with him with was enough for Jay & Thommo to get by. After restarting the engine & getting back on track I set about trying to close the gap to those ahead knowing I had plenty of laps to do so. My strategy was to start on a full tank, go a long as I could, lap 31, top up & finish the race. As I saw Jay & then Thommo pit I got myself back upto to 3rd but knew if I could keep my pace up I would have to fight with Thommo again after I came out of the pits for the last 10 laps. This was not to be as I managed to exit the pits with 20 seconds on Thommo & just drove it home to finish 3rd. Thanks to Thommo, Ross, Jay & Roland for some great racing & grts to Dmytro for winning the race by a country mile.

I hope to see most of you again next season.

First let me thank Stu for a top notch league. It would be almost impossible to find a superior organizer. We are indeed lucky.

Secondly, checking the replay I see I had a reasonable start but I quickly fell apart with a weak effort through the last chicane where Senad and I bumped ( no problem.. any damage done was not noticeable in the car's handling). Now a little out of focus I became irratic and went wide in the next two chicanes (Senad slipped through) , wide on a couple corners and then approaching the top of the preceeding hill, wide again and I bumped into Domagoj ( sorry) and deservingly so fell to last. After several laps of brillant driving :p, I scrappled to 12th position, then11th as Senad pitted ,10th as Tim pitted, 9th as Predrag spun off. I now knew my fate was sealed because I had yet to pit while my adversaries had done their deed and they were hot on my tail. On my 34th lap after holding off numerous attacks of advancements by Tim, Senad an Predrag I had to pit and they all breezed by:(. My little bit of glory now gone. I ended in 12th after a mighty struggle with a Jag ( good racing Norman).
Grats to Ross as top dog and my hat is off to all drivers. Long live GTL :)( even under a new name).

Haahaa I was mentioned in every post here. Maybe because I visited almost every position in the race, I felt like I'm some sort of supervisor. :D
Dmytro is doing great, check... Ross is pushing hard, check... Bob is good, check... Hi Tim, you doing fine, check... Senad is having fun, check...
It's funny when you reading this, but be sure it wasn't funny for me in the race at all. :)

I had one of the best starts ever in league race, from 6th to 2nd place before T1. I had a contact with Stu in chicane, so I checked the replay and both of us were sticking to the racing line so it's one of those incidents.
I was doing phenomenal in 2nd place for 6 laps, then after Ross closed down the gap in lap 7 just before T1, I incidentally switched from 3rd to 1st gear and I lost the controll normally, almost caused chaos in the chicane, sorry guys for that. Ross, I was breaking a little bit earlier maybe, sorry mate. I'm unsecure with braking in this season so my braking spots are pushed back at least 5-10m.
Anyway, I was back in 7th place, trying to keep my concetration on level after that stupid mistake and with a broken suspension. Did just fine with damaged car until lap 22, when I entered pits with 1 liter of fuel, just how I planned. :) Decided to leave the damage unrepaired since I was doing good with it. So I checked everything in pit menu - no repairs, all tires to change, check! And guess what, forgot to check the fuel, so I left the pits with that 1 liter, switched to 4th gear and driving like a granny whole lap to save fuel, awful. Entered pits again, now with 0.1 liter of fuel!!! with engine stalling just in front of my box! With huge smile on my face (one and only in this race) the pit menu appeared. 32L of fuel, checked, no change of tires, check, no damage repair, check! Cant' remember but after I finished that second pit stop I was around 10th place I think, and from that moment my consistency died... muerto, dead! Struggling in every lap, checked 12th place, chasing Senad for couple of laps, passed him, went off, and again behind Senad... pushed hard again, passed him, went off again, hello my favorite 12th place! Somehow I managed to find myself on 10th place behind Tim, and chased him for at least 5- or 6 laps, bumper to bumper, de la creme of racing! I enjoyed that part a lot, thanks Tim! That part of race was the best, helped me to forgot catastrophy in the first 30 laps or so. Thanks mate once again. :)

Thanks all for participating in this awesome league, and ofcourse huge thanks goes to Stu for organising it!

cheers all

P.S. I'm still not sure whether will I participate in season 9, my wife is in 8th month of pregnancy, so you got the picture. :)

@Jack Smith
That hit cost me race...
Whole race mine car was constantly dragged me to the left. I was thinking to pit in lap no10 to fix it but I catch up Hans and pushed car till lap no16 when enterd pits....(no repair, only fuel and tyres).
After pits I dropped on last position and +40 sec but on fresh tyre set I caught Bob, Hans and Norman......

Overall 13 postion is best I could get with car in that condition....

Really good race to finish of an excellent season.
I started off not too bad and was managing to keep up with the back of the field, in the early laps I swapped places with Hans a couple of times Senad was buzzing around behind me for a couple of laps but eventually got past. Jack also came for behind and went sideways as he passed me, I managed to avoid him this time (we've had a couple of bumps this season already ).
Thought I was not doing to badly then I pitted, my stop took 57seconds. After my pit I seemed to be well behind and Bob M was not far behind me, I had thought he had got it wrong with his pit strategy but after holding him off for a few laps he got past me.
Looking forward to next season, thanks to Stu for giving us this league and congratulations to everyone who raced.:)

Excellent league, organisation and drivers second to none.

Next time I may actually try the cars out rather than picking one I had driven in a club race or 2 and liked the feel. Just unfortunate that the tyres on the Jag were done after halfway if you pushed, but there is no denying I loved every minute throwing the big lump aroundin the 100Km races and fuel saving in the last. I think I now know how this car must be driven.

Conratulations to all drivers and Ross for the title and although there were only 2 of us congratulations to Norman and myself for driving the Jag.

@Norman - I worked it out on the afternoon that a no stopper would be possible and would not cost me too much, unfortunately I took it a little to easy early on and dropped way off the pace, which meant I had to clog it to catch you and pass then save fuel till the finish and engine cut off as I crossed the line.
