I love the smell of RDHGP Round 3 in the morning.

Welcome back to Round 3 of RDHGP S6. Anderstorp was a pretty big contrast after Mosport, and we saw some people adapt readily, while some others found the Scandinavian circuit hard going.

We had our first Racing Incident report at Anderstorp, which we turned around inside 48 hours thanks to the Drivers Panel that was convened. I hope to keep these things as rapid as possible so people aren’t left waiting, wondering what is going on, FIA-style.

We managed to dodge any technical issues at Anderstorp for the most part, which I’m rather glad about. There was a debate in the thread after between Krzysztof & Dmytro about an incident in T1R, which I kept my eye on, but was always polite and did not descend into finger pointing, so I let it stand. Additionally, it was a rather interesting point to debate with some areas open to interpretation, so it may prove valuable. This is not meant as a criticism of the two drivers involved as it was resolved amicably, but it does serve as a good example

My take on it, and the salient points therein, is as follows:-
  • Overlap – this needs to be created before braking occurs. It is very easy to get on the brakes a fraction of a second later to create a physical overlap, but it doesn’t mean you are in control and can make the corner properly. Unless you are sure that you can brake that much later and make the corner under total control on a safe line without baulking the car you are passing, think twice about the attempt.
  • Lines – the people in front should be aware that someone was close behind then going into the corner. If, like Dmytro in the example, you lock up and drift wide, you should expect that the driver following you (Krzysztof) now has that inside line. If you go wide, you’ve made a mistake, take your medicine and stay on a wide line around the corner. Cutting back across to your previous line will just cause those sort of accidents, and the Incident Report will almost certainly go against you.
  • Periphery – the biggest loss that we get between real world vs sim racing is that sense of peripheral vision/hearing etc. so we need to be extra aware using what we do have (mirrors, etc). People in front need to be aware of their situation, people behind need to recognise the driver in front’s limitations.
  • Perspective – losing 1 place, and therefore 1 point, safely is probably better than defending it aggressively and taking you both off. Look at it this way - If you’re in 13th and drop one place safely, you’ve still got 7 points for 14th. Take you and the Car behind off, and you’re both almost certainly left with nothing. Be pragmatic about it.
Such is the ever evolving world of the RDHGP season, we go straight from the technically demanding Scandinavian Raceway to a faster track and what will almost certainly be the shortest race on the year, in time terms at least.

For Round 3, we travel 750 miles SouthWest to Rouen, Northern France and the Historic Rouen-Les-Essarts circuit, and the fearsomely quick 1955-1970 layout.

Circuit Notes

Located about 70 miles North West of Paris, Rouen-les-Essarts was opened in 1950, with the original layout of 3.17 miles being about a mile shorter than the version we will be running. In 1955, the original link from Beauval to Paradis was abandoned, and the back straight extended to include Gresil and Scierie corners, forming the most famous layout of this great circuit. This layout was used until the French Grand Prix of 1968 where Jo Schlesser lost his life. After this, the circuit never hosted F1 again, F2 being the highest Formula hosted. A new Autoroute through the area forced the track to be changed in 1970, progress ironically taking it back closer to the original layout. A new permanent chicane built in 1974 on the Six Freres corner changed the character enough that it forced a rename to Des Roches. The circuit close due to economic and safety reasons in 1994, but the gentlemen of the RDHGP have re-opened this great circuit in its fastest and most famous incarnation – 1955-1970.

I know there are certain drivers in certain cars (and I think we all know who I’m referring to here) who are looking at the track map, and licking their lips.

There is a decent length run from the S/F line to the first corner, T1R, which is fast, while falling away down and right, opening on to fast a downhill straight. We reach some high speeds before getting hard on the brakes for T2L, an uncambered Left-hander. A very tricky corner, especially near the start of a race with compressed traffic and cold tyres.

Hard on the accelerator to T3R – Six Frères – a real balancing act of steering and throttle inputs to negotiate this and keep momentum for the final downhill run of the lap. Building up to near full speed, Rouen then plays its sneakiest trick on drivers, and that is T4aL & T4bR – Nouveau Monde.

T4aL is a left handed kink placed exactly where you would want to be braking on a straight approach for the T4bR hairpin. This normally involves some early braking before T4aL, coming off the brakes to make the corner and then back on hard to make sure you negotiate the T4bR hairpin. To make it harder, the hairpin itself is cobbled, not tarmac, so any over aggressive acceleration can throw your rear out. A very technical section to come in the midst of the lap, and one that will punish the complacent or careless. This is the lowest point of the circuit, from here we climb over 100m to the highest point.

T5R is shallow, and negotiated at full acceleration before a dab of brakes to negotiate the first of two left-handers. T6L is relatively shallow, but has some negative camber on it, so an early turn in is vital here. Follow this with another blast of foot down before approach the sucker punch of T7L, Sanson. Tight and not particularly positive cambered, going in here too hot will run you off and into the barrier on the outside.

On the exit of Sanson, it’s hard acceleration into T8R Beauval, a relatively shallow right hander. Well balanced cars will be able to just give a slight breathe on the throttle to make this corner, and then get on full acceleration for the massively long, flatout section that follows. There is a slight, shallow kink – T9R L’Etoile – before you get up to full speed, but this is handled without any slowing.

A long stretch of uphill straight follows before T10R, Gresil, the highest point of the circuit, which, if you are feeling happy with your car, you can take at full chat. Another long straight follows, which starts bound on the left by Armco, and then widens to a 5 or 6 lane width up to the last hard braking point of the lap, T11R – Scierie. This is a medium speed corner, but it’s highly likely that the approach to Scierie may well be the highest speed that our cars reach this season, so making sure you adjust to the speed difference is vital.

Flat out from there, as the tracks starts gently downhill again, and through the final turn T12R Paradis, negotiated without a lift if at all possible and onto the S/F straight to complete the lap.

The Race Director has some notes for drivers. Please see the track map above for location of Race Direction note:-

All Corners Without Exception – The kerbs are not deemed as track, therefore 2 wheels must be within the white lines, on the tarmac, At All Times. Again, there are NO exceptions to this rule at any point on the circuit. Any exception to this rule is deemed illegal, any advantage gained by this method must be ceded immediately. Report people deliberately and excessively cutting.

T2R – This corner, especially on the first lap, will be tricky due to the heavy braking zone, and the negative camber throwing your car to the outside. Reckless accidents here will be punished heavily if reported. As always, be aware in Lap 1, of people as you turn in here, it will be slower than on susbsequent laps and crowded.

T4aL / T4bR – Nouveau Monde. As mentioned above, this is a highly technical section, with little or no run off areas. If someone goes off on the inside of T4aL, they will most likely spear across the track and into the exit of T4bR. Entry to T4bR is a prime example of the passing region that I am talking about in the introduction. People may take a wide entry to T4bR, deliberately, with the aim of swooping across for a late apex. Be aware of this – it is not carte blanch for mad runs up the inside and then protesting that you had overlap.

T11R – Scierie. There will be lots of different braking distances for this corner, as well as lots of different top speeds down the back straight. Be aware of what is around you, and again, throwing a lte one up the inside and not making the corner does not constitute a fair or clean pass. It is very easy to drift off the outside here, and the kerbs can upset you into a spin.

All points on the track – General Items
No lights are to be flashed at any stage, under any circumstances, during the race.
No Chat during the Quali or Race except by Race Control for information.
You may put your lights on if you are on a timed Qualifying lap to inform people in front of you. If they themselves are on a timed lap, they are not under any obligation to move for you.
The Track must be re-entered safely so as not to ruin other peoples races.
Car damage must be assessed realistically to know if it is possible to make the pits or not.

Incidents, Investigations and Penalties

There was one incident report arising from Round 2.
· D. Cuthill receives a 20 sec penalty for avoidable contact and severely disadvantaging another driver.

There are 2 Drivers removed from the League after 2 consecutive no-shows
· H. Smolders
· G. Migazzi

2 drivers have also resigned from the League
· G. Camargo
· K. Omdal Tveito

Please remember, the League staff will only review incidents if they are reported to them.

No report = no review.

Please try and remember the incident reporting guidelines: review, cool off, review again. Only after following the above process, and if you are convinced you still need to report it, should you let the League staff know. Please give as much information as possible during the report (time of incident, drivers involved etc.) Accident reports made within 24 hours of race completion will be ignored.

Any accusations or complaints aired in the Chat during or after a race will mean a penalty levied on the person complaining or making the accusations, even if a subsequent official complaint gets found in their favour. I simply will NOT tolerate any post race finger pointing.

Liveries

You have chosen your car and livery already, and you must only drive your chosen car at any time during an RDHGP event. Every driver has a unique livery in this season of RDHGP.

Scoring System

Points are scored down to P20 (75% distance completion required) so people can fight for some points no matter where they are on the track, and hopefully have a season long battle with people around them in the League.

The Distribution is as follows for 100km events :

Terrible race to me again, but the good news is I think I found the reason of so many mistakes from my side in last 2 races. My setup is too agreesive I think. I have power on 20% and coast on 40% and that's why I loose control very easily.

Quali P10. Race again a lot of mistakes and I hit Jack during braking (very sorry). Nothing more to write :(

What power and coast do you have guys in your 911s?

Please give me some of your time to clear up two accidents before any speculations can happen.

In the first lap, after start which I made very clear and good, T3 (I would guess) I got hit by Pedrag - made me spin, all the back of the grid got into one big nascar crash thanks to this. I apologize to the back, but there was nothing I could do.

Then, Tom Wilson, I dont know what to say, honestly. It seems I pushed you, but you were in very bad lag, I was keeping huge reserve when turning behind you and you spun from nowhere I didnt touch you. I have it on replay also, I was going and then you just spun in direct of my way, then your car started to be damaged by "ghost" from me. I apologize also, but from me I again could do nothing, it was just bad luck.

The rest of the race was consistent and clear.

Another night affected by poor conenction speed....

Had word during practice that i was lagging, managd to fix this by swapping ports on my switch and PC. Hoping that was the end of it we hit qually, the Vette was sublime and I posted a 2:11.4 which was good enough for pole. Alas i was chucked out of the game a couple of minutes before race, so I rejoined for the race with no official Qually time. Back of the Grid and I was thinking it was game over.

Couldn't have been more wrong! Had a shaky couple of laps where i was feeling my way round on cold rubber, knocked Bob M at one point and spun him, sorry for that!

After 2 laps I was still last having spun Bob and waited, and I was also Spun by someone at the end of the long straight, not sure who as they didn't wait.

I was feeling pretty down at this point but when I saw Ryan in the shrubbery at the hairpin I perked up thinking a race could be on the cards. While Ryan left the game shortly after, I made the most of the Vette's engine advantage and set about passing everyone I could.

After a breathless 14 laps I had battled from 25th to 5th, with an 18 second gap to 4th I decided to just get the car home.

Although, after i crossed the line everyone else froze up and I left the game. So not sure what the official results will say, my game reckons I was 5th but server could have lost me before that? Not really bothered about the points if it craps out, had a great race and to me that is what matters!

Thanks to everyone who helped with the mad rush to join the server, helping solve my lag and for the (Mostly) generous room given on track tonight!

Thanks also to Stu for the setup as usual!

Not to worry mate, if i was lagging then there is nothing you can do about it!

Ondrej spinning in front, tried to avoid, ended up hitting the fence, and with a crippled car on lap 1 again.
I barely reached 5th gear near the end of the straights. Kris was whizzing by me like I was in a Mini.
I was just cruising solo the whole race.

EDIT: even though I was alone most of the time, and a couple of seconds of my pace, let alone everyone else's, the race still ended too soon :). Cheers to the people in charge :trophy:

On one off my least favorite tracks i get the best possible result.

Q: Went not like planned. Was quite busy on track and couldnt hit my times. Still 2th when the unluckly Tom left.

Start was oke. Had a better one then Ryan. So i didnt close the door in T1. But the funny thing was i couldnt see him in my mirror. Thought het just had a bad start. Took it easy in the hairpin. Looked behind and saw Ralf and a other Pantera so thought it was Ryan. But looked at the timing and saw it was DC and saw Ryan nowhere. From that moment i knew i had a good chance to win. Took it easy in the first laps. Then started to push. Got a gap to P2 of 10 sec until i screwed it up after the long straight wich spun me abit. Lost about 5 seconds. Could get it to 9 again. Until the timing left. After that i just looked where Ralf was when i exited the hairpin. Got more of a gap and took it easy in the last laps. Think Greg closed abit but was still 10 sec behind. So took P1.

Maybe abit of a "stolen" win but with some luck you never got anywhere. :)
Thanks Stu for the league and all drivers. Cya next year. :)

what a night :D
made a last try to enter the server 10min before the end of Q with a new instal. the only thing i was not able to reinstal is the V2.2 of skinpack cause is the only one wish i "open" and not save... and it work!!!!!! :))big thx to Stuart and Amir for help!!!
then, go to Q :) not good time i was at 2sec of my PB who put me in P13.
race: made a easy start cause i was already happy to drive :D some guys crashed and win some "easy place" there. then i had some good and fun beattle with Stuart, Bob, Neil,... then im coming back on Ralf who was in P2, i was a bit but really a bit faster on the S/F straight and when we was almost side by side he brake really early that it was needed and let me pass, dont really know why... lool but he put some pressure and he was faster in all fast corner and reovertake me. then after Sasson we was again side by side and in Beauval i saw Ralf on the grass, i really hope i dont touch?? i try to stay inside but the car "push me" to the left.
it was the last overtake for the race, finish P2, Ivo was in front with 10sec gap and his "over powered" Panthera :)
was a good and fun race!! thx to all! ;)
cu next time :)

One of my most favourite tracks, almost worst result possible....

5th qual and a reasonable start to just be able to hold my position to Andre,we raced hard and close all around lap one, nice stuff Andre always room given between us both there, sadly the fairytale start to S6 came crashing down, quite literally...at the 2nd to last turn at the end of the back straight,i was aware of Andre just back a bit on my inside so ready to leave some racing room there if needed, suddenly i hear another motor screaming in and then... "ImpAcT!"..knocked in the rear and off at the exit in to barriers with a jolt and bounce...the car now felt terrible but plodded on,couple laps later i went off on my own at the end of the straight, then Tom arrived to breeze past me and those moments behind him were very scary with some serious lag,i came close to turning him around a couple of times there but thankfully it didnt happen,a really nice few laps sparring with Amir and Jay resulting in my 2nd and final unassisted spin of the night at....yes correct, the end of the straight in to the 2nd last turn :D,..(i saw you giggling Jay do not deny it!)...final run was dicing with a very sympathetic towards me Bob M and Amir, finished off 11th and then went and dug a hole in the snow and curled up in it for a while...
Grats Ivo and podiums, nice to see Ralf and the BMW get some good payback.

Many Thanks Stu & RD

Joined the server and shocking, 2:11 but saw then - ah ok are the Pantera etc. In qualy was then on P9 i think behind Bob and Gary. But it was quite close so was hoping to find some places.

First lap went well, had a nice battle with Gary, together with Bob. First chance i had to go back but was already thinking for the long streight, got a good slipstraem pass Gary right but was unsure where Gary was. After he was missing after the turn i already thought maybe we touched us  but saw in replay he kicked from another one. Very unlucky, i´m sure it had could be great battle over the race. Stand now in a group with Bob and Nigel. on straight was nothing possible but tried it in the brake zone for the hairpin and passed Bob who gives much room there.
Followed Nigel but after few laps a little gap came up and then the fight with David in the Pantera cost a bit of time and still behind me Bob who seemed now also qite fast . After David crashed unfortunatly, me and Bob touched after i missed a bit my brakepoint. He spun which gave me finally space to find a rythm but what did i. Spin myself few laps later and Bob again close behind me (sorry Bob if this yellow car was a bit annoying you ) together with Carlos and Tom. Tom was not to hold (which was good cause he lagged also by me - luck nobody crashed their i guess). After Bob spun only 2 laps to go. Tried to bring iot home but first had to defend to Carlos last lap, worked, so finished P5 or P6. I´m unsure cause Tom disconnect or not . I´m quite happy with the result, was a hard track where a mistake can cost very much. Also was not that "Porsche track" like Anderstorp so looking to the next rounds.

Congrats to Ivo who take his chance well and managed to stay on track without big mistake - wd mate. Also to our Greg, from 13th to 2nd - nice ride - and Ralf in third :thumb:.
And :thanks: all around me, was very nice racing :).

Qualified 22nd and finished 18th. I found all drivers that I had to deal with in the race were very fair in their efforts. Checking the replay I feel that I did pinchout Neil in lap 1 at the second (left hander) corner after the hairpin... sorry for that. I believe you had overlap there. Also much later in the event, I made a cardinal sin at the hairpin. After receiving a little bump which caused me to spin out I came on track infront of two cars driven by Krzysztof and Predrag respectively. I did wait and let them continue but that was after my error. Thanks to Krzyzsrof for waiting... due to the bump.

Well done to the winners, to Stu for all efforts (even those just before race time) and to all competitors. Now to prepare the next event.

krzysztof go for power 10 coast 60.

Had 10% and 20% this time but it not really gives a difference to me. The rear camber seems to have more effect on the balance how i notice this time. But i´m still unsure what is fast and what not .

Thank you! I will try with different settings. Usually I practice alone and wanted only to achieve good times. This time will try to do it in racing offline to check the behaviour of the car in particular situations.

Without testing, logically I'd be inclined towards Amir's coast diff settings myself, Krzysztof.

I always find the 911 to be trickiest under braking into turn-in, and the higher coast settings would (theoretically) tend to stabilise that a bit, maybe at the expense of a bit of turn, but less turn is better than spinning, I suppose.

I think (from memory) I ran 30/50 last time we drove it in a Club event - Hilltop? And it was the most stable 911 I've driven in GTL

Thanks!

In Porsche 911 RSR in RD HGP Season 4 I had 40/80 and in a fact it was stable and could've had competetive times with the stability during the fight or overtaking.

On my currently setting 20/40 I could've been faster but not consistent. Definetely I will change my settings on that.

just had a long watch of the replay of the race. and what a race it was. incident packed with some very high profile incidents. this wasfor me one of the hardes races . i tried my best but the escort disapointed me deeply this time. it had a slow top speed so i twiked the set up in a way that it would turn better .the downside was that i lost even more speed at the top
.i tried my hardest only to be passed easily down the straight. had some memorable fights with jay again.that scene with both of us passing each other down the straight was great.
i passed many cars in the turns only to be repssed down the straight.i had no answer to that.
now i can understand what gary felt in the falcon at the previuos league although for me it is the other way around-( slowest in top speed good in twisty parts).
well done to ivo for his win and for greg for his superb 2nd place in his first race . also grats to ralf for his great and stable drive.
as for the chamionship- the fact that ivo won and gary only got 11th ( not by his fault as i see from the raply) on one hand i feel a bit sad for gary. but looking at the results and the lague standingss now the 4 leaders are very close in points.that only makes things more intresting:)
looking fwd to the next race. btw i hope that ryan will finaly get some points. before the race i noticed how much practice he did and his times were amazing. i thoght he would win it but it turns out not to be the case, ryan i realy hope your luck will change next time.

Q: Got a 24th pos which pleased me as I didn't want to be in the middle of the pack in order to avoid major crashes...
R: ... which got me by surprise after T3. Sorry Senad, unable to avoid contact. I know it wrecked both our cars. A 102sec pitstop didn't help that much: enough to get me back up with Senad (1 lap behind), but insufficient to keep the car under control at the hairpin.
Had a good time with Senad, hopefully beter next round.

Thx Stuart, Carlos & RD.
