Welcome back to Round 7 of the RD Historic Grand Prix, Season 5
The penultimate round of the season, and I can’t quite believe it’s nearly all over…again. I trust that the Silverstone event came as an entertaining contrast to the preceding tracks, lots of high speed drifty turns along a very gently contoured track, instead of the hard braking, hairpins and hills of some of the other recent tracks. I suspect that there were certain drivers who had been waiting for this sort of circuit, and now can’t wait to get into the long, long straights at Bathurst. Before they do, however, there’s the little matter of our penultimate venue.

We hop across the Channel 480 miles, 20 miles less than the Proclaimers were willing to walk, to South / Central France, and Clermont-Ferrand, home of the Circuit d'Auvergne, or Charade.

Please note – we are using the 2009 layout of this track, so please check your installations to make sure you have the latest one. http://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/gtl-tracks-17/charade-2009-updated-version-1127/

Circuit Notes
Like the modern Spa-Francorchamps, and - probably even more apropos - the modern Nuerburgring, today’s Charade is a vastly shortened modern iteration of one of the old Grand Prix circuits run in the late 50’s to early 70’s. Circuit d'Auvergne at Clermont-Ferrand hosted the French Grand Prix 4 times - 1965, 1969, 1970 & 1972, and had a major role in the John Frankenheimer film “Grand Prix”. An 8km long road course, known for it’s undulating nature and gradient changes, some drivers (notably Jochen Rindt) even complained of motion sickness, and deliberately wore open faced helmets in case of any inadvertent…unpleasantness. The part that is no longer used was omitted due to it being very difficult to create extended run-offs, and being naturally rocky (it’s built on the side of an extinct volcano), several tyres being cut by the sharp stones, and a driver being hit in the eye with a loose chipping, ending his F1 career.

The new layout of Charade is approximately half the length (4.050km vs 8.055km) but has (depending on your interpretation and numbering) between 16 and 20 corners, so it’s a very busy circuit, no real chance to rest in a lap, and it includes what I think might be the tightest and slowest corner in our season. Maybe Hårnålen at Knutstorp or Namerow at Mont Tremblant are comparable, but it’s a close thing.

A lap of Charade begins on the slightly downhill grid, facing T1L, a very fast, but very wide 90º turn, which should not cause any real issues at the race start as velocities will not be unmanageable through here. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for T2R, Manson.

Manson is approached at full throttle down the straight, and then it is hard on the brakes for this right handed hairpin. The circuit narrows here, funnelling cars together, and then spitting them out onto the downhill straight that follows.

T3aR & T3bL is a high speed flick, easy to get wrong, easy to induce a cut, easy to unsettle the car. Out of there, and the track climbs to T4L, an uphill 90º with the extremely sneaky T5R waiting just beyond the blind crest to ensnare the unwary or over eager right foot.

Another short blast up to T6R, another crested turn, but this time under braking rather than acceleration. The crest makes it all to easy to lock up as the car goes light over the crest, and you need to be in control as waiting just beyond is T7aL & T7bR.

T7aL goes further around than you initially expect, then drops away just as you want to get on the accelerator, as it open into the shallow T7bR, itself opening onto another downhill straight.

T8R is a hairpin approached at, or nearing, top speed, braking needs to be done early, as it is another downhill braking zone, and the turn itself is hugely off camber so you need to control where the nose is pointing before applying power. A short blast uphill and into T9aL & T9bR, Virage de la Ferme.

This corner is tricky, as the first – left – portion can be taken quite aggressively, but that does impair the second sections exit onto yet another downhill straight, whereas the inverse means that compromising the first section to get good drive out of the second section leaves you vulnerable to an opportunist pass.

Again at or near top speed for yet another downhill braking zone into the 180º T10L, Le Petit Pont. This is another off camber turn, although not as extravagant as T8R.

Accelerate for a short squirt uphill before heavy, heavy braking for T11R. This is the very tight 180º I mentioned at the top of the Notes. This corner is like the Grand Hotel / Loews / Gare hairpin at Monaco, but going uphill rather than down. Once out of there it’s a very steep uphill blast to blind T12L. This is a crested turn, so any overeagerness either on turn in, or on right foot will be found out, but getting this corner right feels glorious.

Another short blast down to T13L, an apparently standard 90º, but again slightly off camber, so there is a degree of difficulty added to keep you honest. Out of there, and you arrive at the 180º T14R – Tertre de Thèdes. This is another test of patience, as once clear of here it’s a blast to T15L, a shallow turn that is inviting and begging to be drifted across the apex.

Finally, there’s another flat out dash, past the pitlane entry, to yet another downhill braking zone for the final turn T16R – Virage Rosier. There are several lines through here, so drivers need to be aware of where people are around them in this area. The walls are very close here, so any accidents may well be race ending.

On the power as early as you dare here, down the S/F straight and across the line.

A busy and technical lap, Charade manages to pull off the trick where lots of the sections, and somehow most of the straights and their braking zones, all seeming to be downhill, but there seem to be very few, and quite short, climbing sections.

The Race Director has some notes for drivers. Please see the track map above for location of Race Direction note:-

All Corners Without Exception – The kerbs are not deemed as track, therefore 2 wheels must be within the white lines, on the tarmac, At All Times. Again, there are NO exceptions to this rule at any point on the circuit. Any exception to this rule is deemed illegal, any advantage gained by this method must be ceded immediately. Please report people who are deliberately and excessively cutting.

T2L - Manson. This turn will be busy and crowded throughout the race, but on Lap 1, ALL drivers need to be extra cautious. There are vast differences between braking distances, agility and acceleration power across the RDHGP field, so you will need to know who and what is around you. Lap 1 incidents through carelessness or selfish driving will be penalised accordingly.

T3aR & T3bL. Very easy to misjudge this section, especially as the tyre grip alters throughout the race. The kerbs can unsettle cars going across them, so be aware of that, and cars that drift off to the right and try and recover the track from the grass.

T11R. This hairpin is very, very slow, so there will be congestion around here until the field spreads out a little, so again, no careless or selfish driving through here, please.

All points on the track – General Items
No lights are to be flashed at any stage, under any circumstances, during the race.
The Track must be re-entered safely so as not to ruin other peoples races.
Car damage must be assessed realistically to know if it is possible to make the pits or not.
There is to be NO post race chat until the last running driver has crossed the line for the final time.

Incidents, Investigations and Penalties

There are no new No-show infractions now being levied on Drivers after Round 6.

Bob Hutchins raised a Driving Incident Report against Ryan Callan in Round 6.
The Report against Ryan Callan was closed without any penalty as a Racing Incident.

--------------
1 driver who was carrying a No-show infraction now has that infraction rescinded.

Manuel Spierenberg. Any further infraction of this type by this driver will result in removal from the League.

Please remember, the League staff will only review incidents if they are reported to them.
No report = no review.

Please try and remember the incident reporting guidelines: review, cool off, review again. Only after following the above process, and if you are convinced you still need to report it, should you let the League staff know. Please give as much information as possible during the report (time of incident, drivers involved etc.)

Any accusations or complaints aired in the Chat during or after a race will mean a penalty levied on the person complaining or making the accusations, even if a subsequent official complaint gets found in their favour. I simply will NOT tolerate any post race finger pointing.

Liveries
You have chosen your car and livery already, and you must only drive your chosen car at any time during an RDHGP event. Every driver has a unique livery in this season of RDHGP.

Scoring System
I have extended the points distribution method down to P20 (75% distance completion required) so people can fight for some points no matter where they are on the track, and hopefully have a season long battle with people around them in the League.
The Distribution is as follows for 100km events :
P1 - 25 pts
P2 - 22
P3 - 20
P4 - 18
P5 - 16
P6 - 15
P7 - 14
P8 - 13
P9 - 12
P10 - 11
P11 - 10
P12 - 9
P13 - 8
P14 - 7
P15 - 6
P16 - 5
P17 - 4
P18 - 3
P19 - 2
P20 - 1

1 point for fastest race lap
1 point for qualifying on Pole

I was very happy to be able to enter the server around 20:00 Brussels' time so I had some time for practice. I had to move heaven & Earth (including my mother in law) just to join you guys on the most beautifull track of this season (for me at least).

Q: My qualifying conditions weren't as optimal: my mother in law was still running round the house so I could only get out with +/- 9 minutes to go. That's 2 qualifying laps here, so I was satisfied despite circumstances with a 2:20 which gave me a 19th spot. (I pulverised this time in lap 4 of the race with a 2:18.9 on a full tank)

R: Not such a bad start and some very safe driving behind Tudor in the first lap(s) gained me 2 positions. At some points the train I was following wasn't going vrey fast, but with 5 cars packed up in front of you there's little chance of overtaking. When things settled down I pushed down to my fastest lap (lap4) and got passed Tudor. And Hans offered us a clear passage when he left the grey stuff.
I got to pos 13 in lap 9, but then I started to make some smaller (and bigger) mistakes slowly loosing positions to Tudor, then Warren and another 2 laps later Neil. 5 laps later Manuel passed and Hans was threatening my rear bumper. For the remaining laps I had to struggle in every corner to keep Hans off, as it felt like I was driving on the rims - no more rubber left. I made a serious tap against the wall after T1 in these final laps which didn't improve the handling. Finishing 16th with a (temp) monsterscore of 5 points!

Gratz Amir & podium and a big Thank You for Stuart for this excellent track choice & preparations, & RD

Well, that was a workout and a half. :)

Had some very good scraps, especially with Martin & Krzyzstof for what felt like several thousand years :D - great stuff fellas.

I owe Ryan an apology, he was lagging quite badly for me, and unfort that lag caused a touch - I didn't feel anything, and it looked from my in-car view almost like you lost it under acceleration, but checking the replay shows you spiking back and forward, and one of those caused a touch. Not much I could do tbh, but apologies anyway, I don't like contact at the best of times.

Quali - P5 - my PB so I am happy with my performance.

Race - On L1T2 someone pushed me (must see replay to check it who) and I hit the wall, lost many place and must have climbed up. But it was very interesting to do it. Finally all race fight with Stuart and Martin. Later with Andreas and Ryan. Finally after mistake of Stuart I moved him. Meantime Ryan had accident, Andreas also and I finished after Martin on P4.

Happy with my performance in this race. All time action, I really like it! Thank you Stuart and amrtin to keep me on the highest level of concentration and adrenaline :)

quali:
This track is just awesome. up and down, slow turns, fast corners just everything a track needs. I wa able to to a 2:18 in quali. put me on p15 I think. Was quite happy with that.

race:
As always the NSU takes off like a rocket at the start. But this time I didn't manage to gain some places. Had some really nice close racing with Warren and Neil. Thank you guys :D. But after some laps I lost my rear at the last turn and was just behind the pack. I was able to gain some time to the guys ahead and after a while I got Kris. At the end I found some good speed but I was not able to close down the gap to Warren and Neil again.

Was My best race so far. (Have a sparco racing seat now maybe this was the key :D)

Looking forward to the last race of this season.
(Marc the other NSU driver is just 1 point ahead. So the NSU battle is on)

For this race i think i was much more prepared then to all the other races, so much harder that the race was so chaotical for me.

Started from third but not so good to Martin, we go side by side to first right and then i got a hit from inside. This was not from Martin, Tom go inside as third driver with much more speed. For me a typical win first corner move, don´t know why if you have two cars in front of you to go inside. And if it wasn´t with intend he had could gave the place back, but not in this case.
Later i got the place back up to third in front of David. Saw now Ryan and Amir fighting. Ryan seemed very aggressive (after the race i can understand why). I could profite from this and jump on P1, unfortunately i spun without influence. So back P3, later i was between Amir and Ryan and Ryan pass me very aggressive with touching me inside the corner, not very gentleman like. I had not the feeling that he wanted pass there without "crashing" , for normal outbraking he was too far away so only with this much more speed he go beside me.
I was a bit angry about it and with maybe 30° in my room it was hard to calm down.
And then to this came several spins which cost me finally the podium, my own stupidness in this case. Was then behind Martin, i tried really to overtake fair cause i was on several track areas much faster. But every time he was directly in front of my line and block me sometimes very hard. Then unfortunately i spun again (with this i made much mor "rounds" then all others .-) and go down to P6 behind Stuart. Now i could feel by myself how Ryan feel behind Amir. I was sure more then 1 sec pere lap faster but to overtake this "car of hell" is almost impossible. Equal how faster you trought the corner, out the corner the Abarth is in front. I thought before the 180° corner i can brake much later and try it one time. Unfortunately too late and i touched Stuart hard, sorry for this. He stayed in front and only cause of a too late braking from Stuart i got P5 in last lap.

For me this race felt very aggressive in compare to the other races and not much consideration to each other. Last it was only at the start (with a hit in first lap in Silverstone) but this time also in race. Maybe i was only more stressed cause my hot room but i was happy as it was over :-/. Not sure how you felt but that was not what i normally expect here on RD. Hope the final will be a bit smoother.

Congrats Amir and the podium, specially to David on P2 after he had not much luck this season.

Got to say, I can't agree with a lot of what you're saying there Andreas with regard to the race being more aggressive than normal.

When I was behind him, Martin drove excellent lines, putting the car exactly where I wanted to be, but he wasn't swerving all over the place to block. I was behind the two of you a lot of the time, and again he looked the smoother out of the pair of you.

i agree with stuart andreas.to be honest i had a very good pace at this track and if i wanted to i could have ran away from you and ryan at the start( which dosen't happen too often:)) . but i wanted to have a fight not an easy run to the finish which is boring imo . that is why us three had a very good race for about 5 laps. ryan made a good move on me passing inside before the last turn and you followed him giving me a hard time. no agressivness was from you both in my opinion. then the race realy started from me. we made some passed and repasses for the next laps until unfortunetly both you and ryan made mistakes and spun. i decided to keep my pace and it paid off in the end:)
those laps were memorable ones for me. one thing i leraned from racing at rd events is the past is that patience pays off. no need to try to win at t1.especialy for such a long race .

I don´t mean that he drove unfair or something like that, no ! - he defended very good. I want only say that it was not easy try to attack and dont push him off track because of sometimes early braking. (that was what i felt)

This i can´t understand, sorry. With this driving you provoke more Ryan and me then have nice racing. There was some harsh situations from my point of view. If Rayn had push you off track with a crash then you couldn´t encumber oneself.

Be happy to be the fastest on track (what wasn´t true from the best time !) and drive. Such rubbish is nothing, for me.

As Stu quite elequently put it, that was a work out & a half.

Qualified just outside the top ten. Had a good start in the race but as the grid is quite small not really any chance to move up a position or 2 unless someone had any problems off the line. After getting through T1 & T2 cleanly I found myself behind Roman, Carlos & Jay. After having a nice few laps behind Roman trying to find a way through, around 7 I think, Jay & Carlos were starting to pull away a bit upfront. Before I managed to get by Roman, after he had a little tank slapper on the final turn, Carlos already had a spin at T5/6 which had put him behind me. With Roman's little wobble this gave me a chance to put a little distance between Roman & Carlos while they duked it out. A few laps later Roman disapeared, sorry to hear you had a pc problem, so now Carlos started to catch me. I had to defend my position with Carlos but thought he would get by sooner rather than later but just when I was expecting Carlos to make his move I noticed he had dropped back again, must of had another spin. As the race progressed I just kept to my pace and tried to put in consistant laps. I could now see Jay & Tom ahead having a right old ding dong of a battle & tried to see if I could catch them. During this I lost my consentration twice and both time had a little wobble and lost a little time. As I had now built up a gap to those behind I didn't lose my position but did lose time to Tom & Jay. Again pushed hard without any mistakes & slowly made inroads on the gap, plus with Tom & Jay at it this also helped. On the last few laps I could see Tom really defending hard and got to within a couple of seconds of their battle but alias time had run out so crossed the line 9th. This was the first time I had driven or raced at this circuit & like so many others thought it was a great track with some great corners and very challenging but also very rewarding when getting it right. Thx Stu for another great league track/race and to all the time/effort you put in to make this one of the best leagues on RD, cheers mate.

I just have to respond to this.

I agree that I tapped Martin slightly into T1, cause by me outbraking myself as the tyres were cold and I had one eye on the mirrors. If he rebounded into you and caused you to lose some time then I apologise.

However - from what I saw in car I hit Martin, he carried on behind me. I see no reason I should cede the position back as it was not a huge impact, if he wen't off track or spun then of course i'd wait as normal. It was in no way a 'typical win at first corner move', primarily as it was really a 'move' more of a mistake! We've all found ourselves on the outside of a corner before and it's just what happens i'm afraid.

Again, I apologise if I caused you any annoyance but since you were past me soon after anyway I'd hope we could agree there no harm done. If not then raise a report etc....

For a season that I've really been messing up big style, this race put a smile on my face.

I nailed a decent qualifier for 4th off the grid and pulled a good start, squeezing in front of Andreas into 3rd. Stayed there for a few laps, watching Amir and Ryan squabble over the lead. Going over the hump of turn 3, I was slow out the corner, allowing Andreas back into 3rd. Our group of 4 were pulling well away from the pack but on lap 6, I hit the brakes too hard, sending my car squirming across the grass. Thankfully, this would be my only mistake.

Tom was now in front of me and Martin right on my tail. Next lap I'm running door to door with Tom around the first 3 corners and I manage to slide past. Then Martin has a pop at me for a few corners but I hold on to 4th place.

Regaining some composure, I pulled a gap from the pack but the leading 3 were well ahead. Still only on lap 7, so it was now a case of trying to hold it all together for the reminder of the race.

First to drop back from the leaders was Ryan putting me into 3rd. A couple of laps later and Andreas spun his car and I was now in 2nd place. No chance of catching Amir who had now disappeared up the road.

Just had to hold my nerve for the rest of the race, bringing it over the line in 2nd place for my best finish so far.

Grats to Amir for his supersonic racing.

From the start I was fighting with Amir and Andreas - if you could have gone faster you should have - don't spout such nonsense in the forum - we were both on your pace in quali and practice.

I passed Amir first with a touch so I let him back through - Andreas nipped through also - when I came to pass Andreas, I felt I surprised you with a good move and you moved across as soon as you saw me coming, hence the contact. But that's just racer's opinion. I can't remember passing Amir, but I did.

While in the lad by a couple of seconds, I had a mini screen-freeze which made me spin at the very tight hairpin - back to third. I got past Andreas when he span out of T2 and was closing down Amir when I had my second screen-freeze, lasting around 20 seconds, dropping me back to 7th. The graphics were absolutely shot now - I could just mainly see meshes and the raw GMT models.

Came back through - was a little unhappy at some defending tactics (IMO the standard of racing has dropped in recent rounds) but I got back up to Stu. I was faster but of course it was very difficult to pass plus he was winding me up. I got past at Petit Pont but then I got a touch which sent me on my roof (you explained that earlier of course, I understand if it was lag) - furious I quit out. I won't be racing at Bathurst sorry - I intended to but the drop in the standard of driving (just my opinion), plus the fact that I'm leaving my work in the proverbial sh!t if I have the day off, does not make it worth it to race.

Congrats to Amir - he is a worthy champion with excellent consistency in all the races so far despite his awful start to the season at the very first corner at Jops.

if i wanted to i could have ran away from you and ryan at the start( which dosen't happen too often:)) . but i wanted to have a fight not an easy run to the finish which is boring imo .

Sorry man but I am shocked what you wrote. On the place of Andreas and Ryan I would feel abused. Even if you start for fun I think you should drive as fast as you can. Writing such things or you plead or simply treat your colleagues as a cannon foder. I really do not like such approach.

But knowing you and see many times your declaration that you really want to win this league I can't believe on this statement.

IMO the standard of racing has dropped in recent rounds

I don't see a drop in driving standards, but to me, some of the comments written here smack of double standards. I have seen accidents and drivers being hit and spun in previous Rounds and most people handle those situations well. You may have even contributed to one or two as well Ryan.

As we all know, the correct procedure to handle disputes is via formal reports, not via pointed remarks in this Forum.

Sorry man but I am shocked what you wrote. .......... I really do not like such approach.

But knowing you and see many times your declaration that you really want to win this league I can't believe on this statement.

I totally agree with Krzysztof too.

i think that my comment about being faster at the start of the race was misunderstood . i didn't mean it in a "brag" way" i want to correct it : when i lead a race alone i get tired and bored and make many mistakes. that is why i prefer to have my own pace at the begining and save tyres. at charade for some reason i was faster then the competition.it was the ONLY time i felt faster all seson . i knew that if i will lead from the start i will probably make mistakes later on. so i decided to keep my pace and ryan and andreas were close by. then ryan made that pass . at that point i decided that it is time to push which i did.
i hope that makes my view more clear. and sorry that you guys understood my post difrrent from what i mant. i NEVER underestimate anyone. as for the insalting words about me talking nonsense and the other stuff written... i don't want to get into this other then saying that this hard words are a bit too hard for my taste.

I don't think Amir meant to say that he was "toying" with Ryan and Andreas. I have raced against Amir enough to know that he usually takes it easy at the beginning of a race mainly to save tires. He usually puts the hammer down towards the middle/end of the race.

Lets remember that in a forum environment, it's hard to tell the tone of the words or the true intentions of their meaning, specially when english is not your first spoken language.

I could be wrong, but I would like to think that I'm not.

Also, the aggressiveness that might have been perceived by some, might just be that Charade is a very difficult track with a lot of places to screw up and tap someone. I normally take pride in my clean driving, but in this round I found it difficult to drive fast and stay clear of the cars around me. I remember lightly tapping Jay early in the race, thankfully nothing happened. And when we are in different cars, they require different braking points making things even more volatile.

Gents, lets not forget that at the end of it all, this is a game and we are doing this for fun. The fun dies rather quickly when we stop getting along and start pointing fingers at each other. There's not much we can do about the past anyway. And there is always the next race or season to look forward to.

Ok, to my speaking "incidents". I have not the intend to make incident reports to this. For this it was too harmless. But i wanted notify it because it was short before the edge to an incident. If i come due this on the grass, then i spin or hit the wall. And due such moves i found the race more aggressive then others.
And i think it´s better to speak about it, also when it´s only writing, to hear the other one point of view.

to Ryan: Sure i was surprised, but initial if i got the hit. I took the normal line throught the inside, for an attack you was to far away from my point of view. I think you can do it in a better way then this.

Summary i´m much clearer now with the race (Tom, Amir and Ryan) then hear nothing about it. So i´m looking forward to Brathrust and hope we get a great final for the season.

greetings
Andreas
