Welcome to the Race Department Historic Grand Prix Season 4 (RDHGP S4)

The RDHGP League staff welcome you to the 2009 RDHGP S4. Some of you we welcome for the first time in this league, while to some we bid a welcome return.

We have moved up a class from last year’s GTC65s, and are using a selected field of 9 cars conforming to the FIA GTC-TC-76 specifications & regulations. The season will run over 8 races, 7 races over a distance of 100km, plus the season finale over a distance of 200km on the world famous Circuit de la Sarthe at Le Mans in its 1977 configuration.

The 100km races will be run on alternating Thursdays commencing 29th October 09, with the season finale running on Saturday 20th February 10. There will be a Christmas and New Year break after round 4 on 10th December 09, with round 5 on 14th January 10.

This season, we continue with our policy of travelling the globe to some of the world’s finest circuits, keeping to a strict one race per country policy. We will be driving in 8 countries across 3 continents, all with hopefully a unique challenge to present to our drivers, and so allow the extremely varied vehicles to shine as the circumstances allow.

While by its very nature, the League environment is more competitive than the Club environment, please remember what makes the GTL Club so unique – our consideration for all other competitors at all times. Let’s try and carry this tradition of clean, fun and considerate racing over into a League environment. It worked well last season, and I will be demanding the same level of sportsmanship and courtesy this season. I would expect people to wait for someone they have taken off, even if it was accidental. In addition, if anyone has a problem with another driver, I will be just as hard on the person with the grievance if they do not adhere to the guidelines.

As with last season, discussions about laptimes - even if it is to say what has been achieved with an uploaded setup - is forbidden. Turning up last season and seeing roughly who you would be battling against only added to the anticipation, so we will keep this rule in place for S4.

Circuit Notes

Australia’s Albert Park was re-opened for racing in 1996, the makeover including a complete resurfacing, making it one of the smoothest tracks on the calendar. It is an ideal opening venue, as it is fast, relatively simple to learn, without any overly difficult or awkward corners. The downside to that is that you may have to wait for mistakes to allow a clean overtake – and I expect all overtakes to be as clean as possible.

In our 76 cars, we will not be troubling Michael Schumacher’s track record of 1.24.125, set in his 2004 Ferrari, and maybe Stirling Moss’s original circuit record of 1.50.000, set in 1958 in a Cooper Climax, is still outside our scope of performance, but I expect some very fast, close racing, with the relative car performance differences on various parts of the track making the gaps very much a variable to give some interesting challenges and battles.

For some this is the first RDHGP event, as they missed the Testing event, and so I would hope that they use the Practice session to the maximum to assess the difference in braking points and acceleration performance across the field. I won’t be too impressed at people wiping out swathes of competitors because they under- or over-estimated their own cars braking performance, or the cars around them.

The Race Director has some notes for drivers. Please see the track map above for location of Race Direction note:-
  • The Start / Finish straight is wide, with scope for manouever, and a relatively long run down to T1R. This, coupled with the disparity in car performance off the line, may mean that this is seen by some people as a good opportunity to make some cheap places. I would hope that we are all calm enough to realise that you can only lose a race in the first corner, and not win it. I will not be posing a non-overtake rule there, but people who charge in recklessly and ruin other people’s races will be penalised – whether there is an incident report filed or not.

  • T1R, T3R & T11R are guarded on the outside by gravel traps, and so drivers recovering the tracks will need to be aware and vigilant of race traffic.

  • T10R is the second half of a set of fast Esses – two wheels within the white lines on exit at all times.

  • The Pitlane Entrance is on the outside of the penultimate turn, and people may choose to pit for damage repair, so all drivers should keep 2 wheels within the white lines unless pitting.
Incidents, Investigations and Penalties

As this is round 1 there are no outstanding Incidents, Investigations nor Penalties.
Please remember, the League staff will only review incidents if they are reported to them.

No report = no review.

Please try and remember the incident reporting guidelines: review, cool off, review again. Only after following the above process, and if you are convinced you still need to report it, should you let the League staff know. Please give as much information as possible during the report (time of incident, drivers involved etc.)

Any accusations or complaints aired in the Chat during or after a race will mean a penalty levied on the person complaining or making the accusations, even if a subsequent official complaint gets found in their favour. I simply will NOT tolerate any post race finger pointing.

Liveries

You have chosen your car and livery already, and you must only drive your chosen car at any time during an RDHGP event. Every driver has a unique livery in this season of RDHGP.

Scoring System

I have extended the points distribution method down to P20 (75% distance completion required) so people can fight for some points no matter where they are on the track, and hopefully have a season long battle with people around them in the League.

OK, wrists don't hurt as much now. In quali I managed a .9 putting me 5th.

Race - I got an awesome start and fully alongside pole man Piotr into T1. He tried to stick it around the outside, but there is no room and I get through with him going through the grass.

So now I led with the reigning champ all over the back of me for the first couple of laps. I hold him back and pull away a little. I pulled a gap of around 3 seconds as Peter, Peter and David battle it out. But then the Peter of a Duivelaar kind is past and in pursuit. I really struggled through the middle two slow chicanes and had to produce full commitment elsewhere, I seemed to be a little quicker through the two fast corners.

Led until lap 9/10, when I brushed the grass under braking and took a short trip through the gravel. I had a pretty huge gap back to 3rd so I just went for consistency and no spins rather than trying to do the unlikely and catch PD back up.

I didn't get no spins however. Came across Carlos and Tom battling on lap 12/3 and I had no choice but to lift off and around she went in a slo-mo spin. This put Palmer-la on my tail and keeping me honest. I had to really push and my wrists were in agony at wrestling this beast around on a pad. Concentration was a big issue as the pain increased, but I managed to hang on to 2nd which I am very, very pleased with :)

Thanks to RD and huge thanks to Stuart whose efforts really shine through and make this league top quality.

:victory: Cooool Race .... Wow

I wish I would not be so tired and could continue to prepare my second illustrated race report :D

I did a lot worse than I thought I would, most of my laptimes were 3 to 5 seconds slower than what I was normally running during practice and qualifying.

I also had a few tags at the beginning with Hans (sorry Hans). I think our cars were magnetically attracted to each other, lolz.

Because of the rocky beginning my mood got crappy which caused me to drive horribly for the next few laps until I caught up with Bert, Lee, and Tom. The four of us spent the remainder of the race chasing each other down and trading places. Even to the very end where Bert spun out in the last corner (giving me 18th) and Lee almost took it away right after that in a drag race to the finish line. Lee, if the finish line would have been 50 yards later you would've had me, lolz!

Even though I was disappointed with my driving and level of concentration, I still had lots of fun trading spots with Tom, Bert, and Lee.

I tried to make it easy for the leaders to pass me when they came up from behind, I hope I didn't unintentionally block anyone.

Thanks Stu and the staff at RD for giving us a place to race like gentlemen.

And congrats to Peter and the podium finishers.

Practice:
Entered the server well on time hoping to find a decent setup: Right before official practice I returned to my good old & steady Zolder setup. It worked out ok for me (a steady backend is a must in the 911 :) )

Qualy:
Hit a 2.13.4. A new PB by a second!

Race:
What a start! Ivo's Vette passing by on the grid after 1 second :bulgy-eyes: and I tried to follow him through the next couple of corners. Wonderfully I managed to get through lap 1 without any incidents and was heading in 12th pos after the opening lap. Then when things got a little bit more relaxed I was chasing Stuart. So in focus of getting that little Escort I broke my PB with another second in lap 4 with a full tank (frustrating isn't it :) ) I even started to doubt whether I had filled up the car :sarcastic: This went very well for some laps, but I just couldn't pass El Thomson. We kept a good pace and steady we both climbed up to position 8 & 9.
Then Knut & Amir arrived & I got nervous resulting in a spin which whacked my car sideways in the wall :crying:. Unfortunately the 911 isn't that rigid and it became freggin difficult to keep it straight on the straights, not to mention what happened when trying to brake. As I needed to get used to this havocked car I spun & squashed the other side, hoping it would make the car more evenly balanced :D Only thing that actually happened is after I lost 2 positions to Knut & Amirme I lost another 2 spots to Ulli & Krzysztof. Then from lap 10 I regained some consistency but I was simply to slow as the cars in front got further away every lap. I could keep up with Krzysztof for around 2 laps, but then I had to let go as the car was extremely nervous under braking. For the final 5 laps I tried driving as consistent as possible as I noticed Ivo trying to catch up on me. I gained 1 more spot thx to Ulli and finished 14th. Not bad with this wrecked car.
Only 1 bad spin with the 911: I'm almost proud of myself. :victory:

Gratz to Peter & podium!

Respect for Mr. Thomson & RD for the most beautiful league in Simland!

I watched the replay last night. And i need to say sorry to Amir and Jari.
At the first corner i tapped Jari slighty and because of that he tapped Amir and that caused him to spin. It looked very different in the race (maybe some lag?) because i remembered that i was quit far away from Jari but when i watch the replay i was much closer.
Sorry.

Man. A. Live. :dance2:

Quallied 16th - about right around here (the Escort's just a TC class not a GTC class vehicle), so I was being realistic more than anything :D.

Race - decent start, but after avoiding the few early spins, I found myself in P8.

This was both good and bad. Good because I never expected to dent the top 10 at any stage in the race.

Bad because I knew that I now had behind me a load of the much faster 911s and 906s who would be all over my rear end in short order. So much for my guess that it'd be a load of different people I'd be battling with for points this season, as lo and behold, it was me & Kris again :D. I did OK, kept him at bay for a while, found out where the Escort was quicker (only one or two spots) and where it was slower (all the others), and it was like last season all over again. And that is a good thing.

Eventually, though, pushing Dagger's finest like I had to to stay ahead, I just made a few little mistakes, gifting a few places back to a few people, then taking them back as they made mistakes of their own, but slowly and surely all those faster cars behind were coming past. The only one that actually annoyed me was the mistake I made to let Ulli and Krzysztof through, because I think that if I'd stayed mistake free, I had enough to stay in front, if not actually pull away.

Still - finishing 13th was probably higher than I could have realistically expected, and it was huge fun getting that, so I'm looking forward to what promises to be a great season.

Ivo, it was the first race, on a crowded grid, on a long fast drag, down to a slow tight corner, with heavy cars on very cold tyres.

Don't beat yourself up too badly - and that goes for everyone - just treat it as a learning curve.

We had a few smack ups in Race 1 last year, as we were all getting acclimatised to how it all works, how the cars feel, and how driving in a pack of real people feels (as doing it with the AI is OK but not the same).

The standard of driving went up and up from that first race, as people just got used to the demands. And those were in the slower GTC65's - we're now in the 76ers, and those margins for error are even smaller - cars are heavier, closing speeds are higher, there's more horsepower to contain etc.

I don't want anyone getting too down on themselves. If anyone feels that they made driving errors, just focus on putting them right at the Glen in 2 weeks. :good:

Wrestling these cars around here absolutely killed my wrists (I'm sure you've heard), but I've never felt anything like it. I've done a 2 hour Mini Enduro and the pain then wasn't a patch on this race. Looks like 10tacle REALLY brought across the difficulty of these cars, as they would be like that back in the day too. This is the sim I wish I had a steering wheel for.

I know but the least i can do is say sorry. :)
It happens not often that i tap somebody out that's why i feel more bad about it i think. :wink2:
