I know nothing about software programming but i have a suspicion its a combo of software and a server side hardware failure.
When the 503 error and and others started popping up several months ago, wasnt it due to server hardware failure?
At this point, I'm kind of interested in seeing how their game framework operates. Before the game and portal update, any flickering or lagging cars were directly due to poor connections. If your connection was solid, you basically had no issues.

Now, with the recent tests in closed environments as well as on our own servers, it's easy to take notice that even people with strong connections are having the same issues. Could it be that something in their portal update is bottlenecking traffic going to the server and therefore impeding the information that is relayed back to the user? It also seems that the invisible or flickering cars could be a severe desync issue that happens during the P2P connections.

I'm a networking guy so this stuff is peaking my curiosity. :D

My take on it is this is the Herpes bug ...; that is to say it takes more than one person carrying the virus to cause the symptoms
I spent 8 odd hours with Sonat and georg and a few others in the last day or so triggering the disapearing bug .
So : the bug appears when two or more people come into P2P range and they both have the "illness" ; as they come into the zone so to speak for some reason the ping flies through the roof and people disappear?
So sat on the grid your in P2P range of about 8 cars this is why we see it alot at the start...
for me i believe this has existed for a good while ; but some recent change has caused it to be more prevalent
So removing P2P until the exact cause has been found is the solution
