PC1 Project Cars breaks 1 million sales

pcars.jpg

Bandai Namco has announced that Slightly Mad Studios' racing simulator Project Cars has sold one million copies worldwide.

The news comes from an official press release, and presumably counts sales from all three platforms (PC, PS4 and Xbox One). According to the press release, PCars is also the "best-rated racing game for Playstation 4" - which we assume is talking about the Metacritic rating, currently sitting at 84.

Slightly Mad Studios head honcho Ian Bell declared: "throughout the development phase, the community has been fundamental - giving us daily feedback, telling us what needed to be improved, highlighting what they wanted the most and ultimately making it one of the racing games of their dreams". The press release ends with Bell saying that the studio "will be talking more about that future very, very soon", substantially implying that a PCars sequel is in the works.

What do you think of Project Cars and its success? Let us know in the comments below!

Proper simulators still require a market greater than one person, and if enough people are hoodwinked into believing hype, lies, nonsense, then sim producers might leave or modify their product.

That's an excuse for hijacking every pCars thread that you see. Do you believe that pCars threatens to derail the entire sim racing marketplace?

If anything it will help to sell a lot of wheels and other peripherals. Many of those wheels will belong to people new to sim racing. Lot's of those new sim racers will probably try other racing titles like GSCE, iRacing, rFactor, Forza, R3E.

It's one thing if you dislike pCars. I get that. But to blow it up as this great conspiracy to justify slamming it in virtually every thread is just silly. Why spend so much time doing that?

Guilty :)
I was interested in AC, bought a G27 for it and purchased all sims on Steam before i even realized what i was doing *g*
I'm still in the process of deciding for rF2, but it's just a question of time :)

Would love me some iRacing, but i don't like the subscription model in video games (and iRacing's pricing overall), so i'll simply get me an RD membership and enjoy clean racers against you guys :D

Don't count iRacing out. True, that it gets expensive pretty quickly but you can try it out relatively cheaply. Be warned: once it gets it's hooks in you it becomes tough to resist. The best thing it's got going is that it fits just about anyone's schedule. There are always races scheduled. If you do try it, be sure to stick with the base content for as long as possible before buying anything extra.

Another title to consider is R3E, it's F2P so you can test drive anything before you buy. The sounds in this title are the best. No, really...the sounds are that good. Ear porn for car lovers. Like I said, ask a ton of questions on these forums and do your homework before spending money.

I see PCars selling well as a good thing. Competition raises the stakes.

If people accept simcade as sim, what will happen to real sims?
Bbbbbut, bbbut, but it's simcade people, it's simcade! Ignortavic , are we going to have to pitch in and get you a counsellor here? Are you going to be OK if Shift 3 moves 2 million units and Mica$ buys himself a Porsche? Breathe deep and go do a lap on some retro title like GSC. Enjoy the scenery as it will take you back 10 years to a happier place.

And here we go again. You can't accept a different view on your favorite game, but it's totally okay to call another game, which is not even the topic here, a retro title or 10 years old (it's not even true).

Let's return to the topic please or start a new thread.

I Wish steam could refund my money to buy GSC and enjoy a functional racing game. This game should be called pCrash... more sales dont make it better, simply talks great about marketing strategy, and in that aspect they have been so good.

Oh, except GSC is broken in that you can't run championships, there's an issue with saving results. So aside from from that, yeah, go at it. The irony lies in the biggest gripe against pCars is that SP mode is "broken" because when it rains the AI are too quick. (I remember when the beta testers were complaining about too much grip in the wet!! Woops, guess they must've fixed that.) I, somehow, have not let that ruin my experience. Nor have I experienced crashes or slowdowns with my ATI hardware (I must be blessed).

I wish there were some more moderate opinions about the game. I know, the squeaky wheels usually get the grease, the pitfalls of the internet. But you either get the unabashed supporters or the people who get nauseated by the success pCars has attained. Right now the latter is outnumbering the former.

To me, anyone who says the game looks like crap is talking out their exhaust. I don't know why or how I've achieved it, but nothing looks as good as pCars on my machine. Nothing comes close. AC looks good, but its missing a lot that makes pCars feel alive.

Its unfortunate that the FFB is as difficult to set up as it is. There's really no excuse to do things the way they did. The saddest part is there's something good under there, it just takes too much effort to get to it! Once set up, it's great. Certainly not Shift 3.

Is the AI fundamentally broken? Nope. Or at least not that I've found. You can't barge them out of the way like Gran Turismo. And you better leave them room if they are alongside, because they will not freak out and back down in deference to you. I've been frustrated in the FRookies (for example), but I learned how to race against them.

Is the game hardcore like RBR? Nope. Is it Need for Speed or GRID? Equally Nope. If you call it an arcade game, turn off the assists. (yes, all of them, no cheating...)

The patch should be out by now, also. I've defended them on this issue in that its better to get it right once, then hose yourself and have to back track. I am also against inundating users with tiny patches. But if they'd released one patch so far that had fixed the AI wet tyre issue, they could have stemmed a lot bad words from the community. They could have taken the ammo out of the guns pointed at them...

And should they be mentioning pCars2? **** NO! Not yet. Are they insane? No developer should be mentioning sequels two weeks/ a month after a game release. They continue to screw the pooch in the public eye...

BTW, did anyone read the blurb at virtualr.net about pCars boosting wheel sales? This is great news for all of us. Better wheels to market, better racing games in the future? The chances are better now than they were two months ago. We have to help these newbies set up their wheels though and get the most out of their games. We have to actually act like a community that these people want to be a part of.

Why does every topic on pCars need to turn into a war?

My theory is that it's tribal. But hey.. the wars have been great. Part of #WORLDGLOAT2015 is that I acknowledge the contributions given pCARS by its detractors. They couldn't help themselves and it helped us. Really fantastic job.

I understand that investors will defend it no matter what, but still that's insane.

Not one of the pCARS senior managers 'defend it no matter what'. We're realists, which is why we got involved in the first place. Certainly if there was something to criticize, there's a way to do it, and a place to do it. The other tribe doesn't know where or how to do it, so one side reaps all the rewards, and the other.. IDK.. maybe they had fun or something.

The patch should be out by now, also.

Serious question here. I see that sort of comment frequently. I'd like to know on what basis someone makes that assertion? Do you work in the gaming industry as a development manager? Are you just stating that the patch should be out by now just because you want it to be, and in some 5 mile orbit you think that since you have a magic wand, everyone does as well? Do you know the pCARS schedule for updates and enhancements and know that they're behind schedule?

I don't get it.

Well Micas, I turn the schedule question back to you, because if you do enlighten us, I would like to know. If this release that SMS provided us is in the sense of building trust with its customer, keeping him in the loop of the development progress, AT THE VERY LEAST they should give them an approximate timeline to release the fix/build.

The manager's duty is to oversee and aid the development, ESPECIALLY during post release, assuring that the fixes are due on time and keep the customer at bay. A very good manager keeps the customer real, giving the necessary feeback satisfying, ultimatately, the customer.

If SMS released this 1.4 patch note, that means they know what to focus on. If we, the customer, are aware of this we at least expect a say from either the Dev Manager or the Dev Lead, an ETA until release. One does not say: "-We got this this and this coming up. -Any ETA til release? The customer is waiting a reply -Aaaah it will be release when it is ready, duh." WRONG MOVE!

Whether this should be out by now or not I do not know, but at least we should have an idea.

That's my 2 cents. Have a different opinion, fine by me, that's what the fórum discussion is made for

Meh, not that interested in P.CARS anymore, they had their chance and delayed too far.

How do the PC sales compare to AC based on time available ? (Genuine question, not hating)

AC sold around 230k copies over it's entire time,

consoles are big seller for sure, and for the more serious racing games there is hardly any competition ( pretty much only Gran Turismo and Forza ) so yeah, not really surprised

It was just their best estimate, but that's probably the most we can hope for. This type of stuff can be difficult to predict a timeline for.

Absolutely, agreed 100% with your statement. But you give at least some optimism to the customer, I know these kinds of releases tend to be complicated, whether if is because of technical issues or third party. Lets hope for the best.

It's actually a 'first party' issue when it comes to certification. I know that the SMS team is working hard on it, and they're a bit shy about making promises after what happened when the game was delayed from November '14 to May '15.

Thing is.. I've come to know some of the devs about as well as someone can on a forum and not having met in person, and I can say with absolute authority that they're committed to delivering what the customers want (the WMD concept). That's pretty rare in game support these days, but then SMS is the publisher so they can do what they want instead of having to obey a company like EA.

so where do Namco Bandai come into all this? I thought they were publishers.
