Quite a hefty price tag at $350 but then again a real wheel in machined aluminum and real leather won't be cheap either. Edit: link to announcement: https://www.facebook.com/Fanatec/ph...1010229308310/?type=1&relevant_count=1&ref=nf

Fanatec revealed what I suspected for a while - that the pictures of the new rims were hiding the real star of the line-up, the quick release hub. Today they posted the video below on their blog showing how their 'Universal Hub Rim' would allow customers to attach their own after market rims from say Sparco or OMP and then configure the rim with shifter paddles and buttons. The Universal Hub Rim will cost €249.95 and will include the following:
  • 4 x small button boxes with 3 buttons each
  • 2 x small levers and 2 x long levers
  • 1 x pair of small shifter paddles
  • 1 x pair of large and fully adjustable shifter paddles
  • 1 x Encoder with 7 functions: turn left, turn right, up, down, left, right, push
  • LED display to show Tuning and telemetry info. Can we used in two positions
  • USB charging port (no data)
The rims they have showed off so far will all cost €99.95. I think is a great move by Fanatec to allow users to customise their setup even further with a choice of their own rim and button layout.

Yup, good strategy from a psycological standpoint. Get the 'wow, this is expensive' reactions out of the way first, then by the end we're all thinking about how much better value the rims are with the 12 buttons and adjustable paddles.
