Today’s motorsport photo of the day is courtesy of Finnish Formula 1 rookie Valtteri Bottas. The 23 year-old stunned the Formula One world when he set the third fastest time in qualifying ahead of the 2013 Canadian Grand Prix.

Right from the start, it was absolutely no secret that the Williams Formula One team was in for a tough year in 2013. They had failed to complete their FW35 ahead of the opening pre-season test session in Jerez, and were calling on two relatively inexperienced drivers to lift them out of a deep hole that they had created.

Nobody from the Grove-based team would argue that 2013 has been a success; however the performance of Valtteri Bottas in difficult conditions at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve undoubtedly lifted their morale in the midst of relatively downcast performances.

Bottas excelled on the slippery Montreal asphalt, setting superb times throughout both Q1 and Q2. His competitiveness didn’t stop there, as in the final qualifying segment featuring the best drivers in the category; Bottas set the third fastest time in his ill-handling Williams! Unfortunately, he struggled to find pace in the dry race conditions, and fell back to 14th place at the chequered flag.

Nevertheless, the sight of Valtteri Bottas superbly steering his FW35 to third position on the grid serves as hope for Williams fans in the future.
