Magnussen Replaces Perez at Vodafone McLaren

After only one season with the Woking based team Mexican Sergio Perez will have to make room for Danish youngster Kevin Magnussen to join the ranks at McLaren alongside Jenson Button for 2014.

Earlier this week team principal Martin Whitmarsh declined to confirm the speculations of a new driver line-up for 2014 as no contracts had been signed but sources told Autosport that the team now promoted Kevin Magnussen.

Bit mixed feelings. Great to see a driver from one of the smaller countries at a F1 top team again. Can imagine that the Danish people are delighted with this news. Finally a second popular driver next to endurance ace Kristensen.

On the other hand what will happen to Perez now. The guy looked so extremely talented at his Sauber days and had a go at all the top teams. 365 days later he aint good enough anymore?

According to BBC and a couple other places, this hasn't actually been confirmed yet.
OP doens't confirm it either: "as no contracts had been signed" :)

But must be very likely to be true as the Kevin is already in the Young drivers programme.

Sucks for Perez though to have to find out via news on the internet that you aren't racing for McLaren anymore next year.

Did Button really drive so much better this year?

JB is a McLaren yes man IMO.....he suits their corporate image. And, yes he has performed better that Checo this year in a dog of a car.

I never really felt Checo was ready for McLaren, big team and all that..... a mistake joining them.

I do wonder what 2014 will bring us, Button and Magnussen.... We could all be surprised, then again this season's disastrous could spill over.

Concerned? Maybe.....

Button 60pts, Perez 35pts

Maybe not 'so much better' but getting on for nearly double Perez's contribution. Also Button already signed until end of 2014, so his seat was never under threat. Might be a different story for 2015 as AFAIK McLaren have no driver's signed on for when they renew their Honda partnership.
