Jean-Louis Schlesser wins his final rally raid

Lac Rose, a lake just under 20 km outside of the city of Dakar in Senegal, again hosted the finish of the final stage of a rally through the north-west of the African continent. Since the Amaury Sport Organisation moved the "The Dakar" to South America, a much smaller rally raid is organised, still with Dakar as finish. The Africa Eco Race starts usually with a ceremonial start in France before shipping over to Marocco for the first real stage. The mythical finish at Lac Rose is celebrated with a mediagenic mass start into the 25 kilometer final special stage, which does not count towards the overall results. Within two weeks, the rally races through Marocco, Mauretania and Senegal to follow the footprints of Dakar Rally founder Thierry Sabine.

The 2014 edition was, like all editions of the Africa Eco Race, was won by two time World Sportscar Champion, two time World Cross Country Rally World Cup winner and two time Dakar Rally winner Jean-Louis Schlesser in one his iconic buggy. Moreover Tomas Tomecek and Vojtech Moravek win the truck category with a Scania and Michael Pisano wins the bikes on his KTM. But it is his last victory, as "le boss", now in the age of 65 years, retires from active motorsports to now be involved in public relations and press work of the AER.

For the first time this year's edition of the race saw a daily coverage on pan-european Eurosport, a sign that the rally is growing.
