It's good to be back

Brendon Pywell

Bob's Track Builder
Hello Track Makers,

Well from the looks of the tracks in progress and XPacks available that things here have been ticking along on BTB even if I haven't been. I have been away from the development for much much longer than planned for a number of reasons for which I will attempt to explain.

BTB was/is a labour of love for me; as said before I spent every spare moment working on this software in order to turn it into a tool that others could use. For many years part-time, and for over a year full time I worked on BTB whenever I could, even on holidays I would take the laptop with me. My hope that this time away from a full time job, in a well-paid position, would eventually be repaid through BTB sales.

So you can imagine my disappointment when sales, which were never great to begin with, suddenly declined to almost nothing. It was this period of time when someone brought to my attention that there was a pirated version of BTB on the internet. That was shattering and quite depressing.

As it was I had planned to return to full time work, my savings had almost depleted and having a family that depends on my income it was necessary to return to regular employment. During this time I reflected upon the previous few years of BTB-dedication. I realised I had in some ways neglected my own needs; in working such long hours I had gained weight, my health suffered and there were times when I was pouring over code instead of enjoying life with my wife and children.

Whilst BTB became far more powerful and we managed to release some great laser scanned tracks I had to wonder was it all really worth it? I decided to give myself a month off development and then see how I felt.

Climate Change - what does this have to do with BTB? Not much, but it did and will continue to impact on the spare time I have. Humans have enjoyed a relatively stable climate during this interglacial period for around the last 8,000 years, allowing us to advance like never before. Why risk that for cheaper dirty energy. It seems strange that we exchange our short term gain from coal fired power plants for the long term stability of the planet's ecosystem. I'm not usually one to get involved in politics, never liked politicians, but I feel passionately enough about the future of our planet, the ones that my kids will grow up in, to become more vocal about Australia's pathetic effort so far. Enough said for now - perhaps we can discuss more in an off-topic thread.

So a month went by, and I kept telling myself I would get back into BTB “soon”, but I never did to any great degree. Having the website hacked and my PC infected with a BOOT virus also made life miserable for a while. Other hobbies and pastimes were more emotionally rewarding. The months rolled on. I've been teaching myself piano for the past two years and I found spending an hour trying to master Clair de Lune far more satisfying than getting another BTB patch out, even if it was extremely self-indulgent. I also took the time to look after my health, I ate healthier, got fit, shed 15 kg and started Karate - even earned a recent gold medal (in my age division).

All this time the thought of having coded BTB for hundreds (maybe thousands??) of hours only to it ripped away by piracy has sat in the back of my mind. It's as close to depression as I would like to come - a glimpse of what people with severe depression might experience, except that I had great family support and other interests to keep me going.

Sadly this experience left me with less motivation for adding to BTB, or even interacting with the community. The number of people wanting to now run it on non-XP based platforms, the endless “you should support Vista/Win 7/Mac” and “if you add XXX feature then I will buy it” emails I got didn't help. So I totally switched off from BTB and everything related to it, and instead focussed on the more grounding aspects of my daily life.

That said, I do check my emails every couple of days and will help those who have genuine license issues running BTB under Windows XP, my email address is bob@bobstrackbuilder.net . I could be wrong but it appears most people with problems are running Vista/Win7 or have not bothered to contact me because of the experiences of some people. On a few occasions, impolite or abusive emails have been deleted without further correspondence. The same fate awaits those that spam my inbox multiple times in a short time period. I simply will not engage with anyone that is disrespectful or rude.

Now for the more cheery news.

I am preparing to relaunch the BTB Pro 0.8.9.0 beta version that had been under test. I now have Windows 7 x64 and BTB runs well on that. There has been no issue with the license system, but that doesn't mean it won't have issues running on other people's machines. I need more feedback from people on this and any bugs found so I will release the beta on the website and automate the licensing for that so anyone with a current BTB Pro license will be able to help test. More details to follow within days after I make some final changes.

Progress will be slow. I am still time-poor as I still have a regular job as well as the family and other commitments taking up time. Please continue to use this forum primarily rather than emailing me for personal advice.

Thanks to all that have given me support, I hope I can at least give something back by continuing BTB at whatever pace I can. Your patience is appreciated as is the great support of those people that are creating additional XPacks and new tracks.

Hi Brendon,
Good that you are there. I deeply understand your reasons and I also know that depressive periods can turn down your activity below zero. I guess it was the enforcing of familiy life and other aspects of life, that prevented you from getting shattered too much. Such things can help you out of a crisis. I am looking forward to new releases and - by the way- W7/64 works fine here.

greats news! in fact best news all year! welcome back Piddy!

Being married and doing a lot of programming myself in the past year or so i totally understand your reasons for taking a break, that said its great you are back.

Great to see you back Brandon.:) I'm glad you got your priorities in order, as great as BTB is it's no replacement for a real life. It may do you good to know that BTB has been a great tool and brought a great deal of satisfaction to a lot of people.

As far as the piracy issue goes, I've found there seems to be a fine balance between to little protection and too much. If there is too little of course it will be passed around, however it seems if there is too much it and it causes the legitimate buyer too much frustration, someone will get around the protection. I don't know if someone pays to have it "fixed" or what but it does appear to work that way for what it's worth.

Anyway, glad to see you back and healthier too! I look forward to your next release.

Welcome back son.

Having met a girl 2 years ago my track building action decreased dramatically, so I can only imagine having a family would leave you know time at all !

If I knew anyone who pirated a copy i'd give them a whack for you. Last thing anyone needs is their revenue stream being eroded by bent copies.

Its a shame that there couldn't be a system developed in conjunction with ISI/simbin etc.. where they have a line of code that is imbeded into their software that authenticates a legit version of BTB and its liscence. It would mean that you have to have the game insatlled on the machine you do BTB on, but surely everybody does. You would think that it was in the interest of ISI to have a good comunity for the game and your application is the tool. I suppose you would almost be a semi-official app for Gmotor2.

Anyway, If i had the time to help you out i would offer my services, but I've just brought a house so the girlfriend keeps me busy with the old paintbrush.

Looking forward to whatever you create in the future at whatever rate you find time for.

P.S. 2 years to learn the piano...its taken me 10 to get nowhere on the guitar!

Brendon,
First of all it is good to hear you are ok! Over the past few years I have really enjoyed your BTB and see it as a great outlet for the little kid in me who built tracks around the house for his Matchbox/Hot Wheels years a go. Thank you for it. It seems I'm one of the few here "building" for GTR2. Please keep us in mind. Hang in there man and don't let the bastards get ya down! You will beat them. No doubts.
Later,

Hello Brandon, Piddy,

I'm so happy that you found the strength again to jump into your project.
When I did found the existance of your trackbuilder I did'nt know anything about it.
I downloaded the demo, jumped into this forum, asked a lot of silly things and slowly on I was able to created my own track.
After that, when I understand the basics, I kept on and even created some tutorials for other inherent prg's. And just to help other
guys to continue and improve their skills.

Now I want to be completely honest to you !

After the demo expired, I was not happy, I could not build anymore !
So, I did a search at some torrents and to my surprise I found some and it did work.
Basicly I shame myself for that but you also did not give any support anymore so I thought,
so what .

Now however you're back and plz forgive me also my 'funny thread" Brandon Pywell, What has become of you ?

I'm more then happy to pay, now you are back, for your baby, but not via paypal.
Plz let me know if I can pay you via bank account and I pay you even 2x !

I'm serious Piddy.

And yes I know very well what can do with a person when get to far in depth with some projects.
At some stage you forget the wife downstairs, I was in that also.

friendly regards,
André

Haven't been reading this forum for a while but noticed this. Welcome back!

I was getting very sad about the idea that there might not be btb for rfactor2. I hope there is now chance :)

Back from holidays, and happy to read this thread and all this good news. I'm sorry, I can't talk english good enough to tell exactly what I would like to say.
No news from Brendon during two years, here in Switzerland, so far from Australia, I had imagine some bad thing could happen to you. In this time, working with BTB (so cool to work with !) on my track, I think a lot of time to you. I am really glad you have overcame all this difficulties.
As a tribute, the name of my last track is...... "Piddy". Welcome back Brendon.
