Lewis Hamilton has suggested his Hungarian Grand Prix win eclipses his world-title feat with McLaren.

The Briton yesterday earned his first win with Mercedes since leaving McLaren at the end of last season to close the gap on championship leader Sebastian Vettel to 48 points.

Hamilton began the race in pole position but still declared it would be a ‘miracle’ if he took maximum points at the Hungaroring.

However, he controlled the race, despite high track temperatures which have resulted in tyre problems for Mercedes all season.

And such was Hamilton’s relief to finally get off the mark for his new team that the 28-year-old rated the win as up there with his 2008 world-title triumph.

Hamilton said: ’I talked it down a lot after qualifying because I was expecting a real tough race. I thought we were going to fall behind. The experiences I had at McLaren were some of my greatest, but this is one of the highlights of my career up to now, one of the most important wins. Moving to a new team, one that was struggling massively last year, and to finally get a win with them after the first ten races is a great feeling.’

Hamilton recently split with his pop-star girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger, and he dedicated his Budapest victory to the X Factor judge.

The Stevenage native added: ‘It has not been the easiest few months. It feels a little bit odd without that someone here – but I would say now that this is one of those races you want to dedicate to that someone. The thought in my mind through the whole race was of someone really special to me and I want to dedicate it to her. For the next few days, this will keep me riding high. It is a bit of a Band Aid that will cover me for some time.’
