FIA have banned the Brawn style Diffusers (With a week to go)

diffuser issue sounds like its falling into a grey area. if the laws governing the design do not say it is illegal then it should be allowed to stand. if its exploiting a loop hole then then feel free to close it, but at a suitable time. they have all had similar amounts of time to develop a car according to the same rules so they should be clear to race with no issues... unfortunatley F1 cannot be with out its controversy can it? :)

Yeah but Last years Ferrari car was illegal at the first round but the FIA did nothing about it :(
Oh well Formula 1 is going down hill fast :(

They haven't exactly banned them yet ( mis leading title ) just changed the regulations so they will have to change them it looks like.

This won't happen until after the Melbourne race according to Bernie:"I guarantee whoever wins the races in Melbourne will be told they are cheating, and it doesn't matter who it is," he explained. "In this case it seems two teams, maybe three, certainly Toyota and Brawn, have interpreted the regulations in a different way to the other teams.

"The FIA at the moment says that interpretation is correct, but possibly some other teams will put in a protest before Melbourne. It won't affect racing but will be looked at after."

Bassicly telling the teams something is legal, they test the hell out of it through winter then when the races start they say what they are using is now banned....

Looking at the regulation change, I can't see anything that would rule the diffusers illegal.

The crash structure for article 15.5.2 now can't have any contact with the external airflow, but that crash structure is the one either side of the survival cell.

The crash structure that these teams are using for the diffuser is 15.5.3.

edit: Ah, it's not that bit, it's the:

"
A single break in the surface is permitted solely to allow the minimum
required access for the device referred to in Article 5.15."

part of 3.12.7 - incorperating the crash structure in the diffuser would count as a break in the surface. Guess they could argue they've got a big 'diffuser accessing tool' that needs a break as big as the crash structure :p
