Bortolotti wins opening race at Brno
Mirko Bortolotti has won the opening race this afternoon at Brno, Czech Republic, and taken the points lead in the 2009 FIA Formula Two Championship.
Fellow Red Bull Junior driver Mikhail Aleshin was second, whilst Philipp Eng finished third after intense battles with Carlos Iaconelli, who spun off into retirement at Turn 8 on Lap 14, and later Henri Karjalainen.
Bortolotti led the field down to Turn 1 on the opening lap, and was able to hold off an attack from Aleshin during the early stages of the race. The Italian then set about establishing a gap back to Aleshin, and went on take his maiden F2 victory in commanding fashion. "I had a good start and a good race," said Bortolotti. "I'm very happy to be in front at the moment, but there are a lot of races to go. My mentality is that there are 24 other drivers who all want to win, so I will fight and we'll see at the end."
Aleshin went on to take a comfortable second, as several drivers squabbled behind him for the final podium position. "If I had just got a slightly better start then I might have tried the pass on Mirko," said Aleshin. "It wasn't really possible but we will see next time."
Philipp Eng and Carlos Iaconelli held third and fourth early on after they both passed Henri Karjalainen. Brazilian driver Iaconelli spun out of the race whilst pressuring Eng, before Karjalainen attempted to retake third position. The Finn chased down Eng during the final laps, but Eng held on by just 0.283s. "It's great," said Eng. "There were still two drivers in front of me so I can't be 100% happy! Still it is nice to back up my pace from Valencia, and it is always good to be on the podium."
Julien Jousse had a quiet and consistent run to fifth, whilst Armaan Ebrahim held off a charging Edoardo Piscopo to clinch sixth. Piscopo had to make his way through the field from the back of the grid after failing to get away cleanly on the formation lap - the Italian producing a series of breathtaking overtaking moves in one of the drives of the day.
Tom Gladdis was the highest British finisher in eighth, just ahead of Robert Wickens, who set the fastest lap right at the end of the race. Jolyon Palmer was in tenth, ahead of fellow Formula Palmer Audi graduate Alex Brundle.
Pole-sitter Nicola De Marco was forced to start from the pit lane, but recovered to finish 12th.
Henry Surtees and Jack Clarke were both eliminated following a startline clash, which also involved Wickens. All three drivers were side-by-side on the run down to turn one, before inevitable contact was made. Only Wickens was able to continue, and a brief safety car period was called in order to remove the stricken cars of Surtees and Clarke. Pietro Gandolfi, Kazim Vasiliauskas, Germán Sánchez and Jens Höing all retired following spins.

Mirko Bortolotti has won the opening race this afternoon at Brno, Czech Republic, and taken the points lead in the 2009 FIA Formula Two Championship.

Soucek wins second race at Brno

Andy Soucek has won Race 2 at Brno. The Spaniard was in second place for most of the race but he moved up to first in the final stages of the race when Da Marco made a small mistake. Soucek was joined on the podium by Julien Jousse and Nicola de Marco.
Front row starters Henry Surtees and Mikhail Aleshin did not get away from the line, which allowed Nicola De Marco into the lead. Soucek leapt from fifth on the grid up to second after he passed Julien Jousse around the outside at turn one.
The opening lap drama continued at turn two as seven cars were involved in a collision, which left Alex Brundle, Henri Karjalainen, German Sanchez, Pietro Gandolfi and Carlos Iaconelli out of the race. Jens Hoing and Robert Wickens were able to continue, although Wickens later retired.
De Marco dominated much of the race, before making a small mistake and dropping down to fourth on lap ten. The Italian was able to recover from the spin and re-passed Edoardo Piscopo in the closing stages to take the final podium position.
This left Andy Soucek to march on to his maiden F2 victory after a faultless display. Julien Jousse scored his first Formula Two podium, taking second at the finish, whilst it was a bittersweet moment for De Marco - the Italin scored his first F2 podium, but had looked certain to win race until his spin.
Piscopo held fourth ahead of Miloš Pavlović and Armaan Ebrahim who rounded out the top six. The fight for seventh was intense as Sebastian Hohenthal, Tobias Hegewald, Kazim Vasiliauskas and Philipp Eng swapped places at will. Contact was made between Hohenthal and Iaconelli, which dropped the Swede down to 12th. Hohenthal also later collided with championship leader Mirko Bortolotti - the Italian's race ending in the gravel. It was Hegewald who went on to steal seventh, with Vasiliauskas clinching the final championship point.
Amazingly, 17 drivers have already scored points after just four rounds of the championship. All three Red Bull Junior drivers failed to finish the second race at Brno, but they still hold a 1-2-3 lead in the championship. Bortolotti leads Wickens by one point, with Aleshin a further four points back. Impressive results for Julien Jousse and Andy Soucek have thrust the pair back into contention towards the top of the standings, having scored 16 and 15 points respectively.
Andy Soucek said: "It was a great race. I made a good start and I was going to attack Nicola but it was too risky. I had a good fight with Julien but to get my first win was amazing. The next round at Spa Francorchamps is my favourite track, so I hope to fight for podiums or even a victory there."

Hegewald dominates race 1 at Spa
Tobias Hegewald took a commanding maiden win at Spa-Francorchamps this afternoon (Saturday), ahead of Andy Soucek and Miloš Pavlovic.
The race got off to a dramatic start when Robert Wickens failed to get away at the start. It looked as though the whole pack would be able to avoid him but Jason Moore collected him at high speed, spreading the track with debris.
The safety car was brought out for two laps. At the restart, Soucek tried desperately to get past Hegewald but ended up running off the circuit, although he held on to his second place. Pavlovic managed to overtake Julien Jousse and the two enjoyed a race-long battle.
Philipp Eng and Alex Brundle both retired after coming together in an incident that also involved Jolyon Palmer. Palmer suffered wing damage and eventually dropped down the order.
At the flag, Hegewald led by four seconds from Soucek, with Pavlovic third, Jousse fourth, Jack Clarke fifth, Tom Gladdis sixth, Henri Karjalainen seventh and Edoardo Piscopo eighth.

Hegewald completes perfect weekend at Spa

Tobias Hegewald has won his second race of the weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, after another superb lights-to-flag victory this afternoon (Sunday).
Andy Soucek finished seven seconds behind in second place, with Robert Wickens in third. The Red Bull-backed Canadian's car had to be repaired overnight following heavy damage sustained in a startline shunt yesterday, but showed no ill-effects when he battled past Alex Brundle at Eau Rouge on the first lap.
Miloš Pavlovic took fourth after passing Alex Brundle on the lap 11. Julien Jousse was sixth and Kazim Vasiliauskas seventh, with Mikhail Aleshin completing the points finishers in eighth.
Jolyon Palmer and Jack Clarke both retired on the first lap after an ambitious move by Clarke in turn 7 resulted in a collision. Henry Surtees was also forced to retire after being hit by Germán Sánchez at the entry to Eau Rouge on lap 3. Sanchez was able to continue but eventually pulled into the pits on lap 14.
Hegewald, though, was never threatened on his way to a dominant win. The German driver has topped all six sessions at Spa this weekend

Hegewald completes perfect weekend at Spa

Tobias Hegewald has won his second race of the weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, after another superb lights-to-flag victory this afternoon (Sunday).
Andy Soucek finished seven seconds behind in second place, with Robert Wickens in third. The Red Bull-backed Canadian's car had to be repaired overnight following heavy damage sustained in a startline shunt yesterday, but showed no ill-effects when he battled past Alex Brundle at Eau Rouge on the first lap.
Miloš Pavlovic took fourth after passing Alex Brundle on the lap 11. Julien Jousse was sixth and Kazim Vasiliauskas seventh, with Mikhail Aleshin completing the points finishers in eighth.
Jolyon Palmer and Jack Clarke both retired on the first lap after an ambitious move by Clarke in turn 7 resulted in a collision. Henry Surtees was also forced to retire after being hit by Germán Sánchez at the entry to Eau Rouge on lap 3. Sanchez was able to continue but eventually pulled into the pits on lap 14.
Hegewald, though, was never threatened on his way to a dominant win. The German driver has topped all six sessions at Spa this weekend

Philipp Eng wins first race at Brands Hatch

Austrian Philipp Eng has taken a brilliant maiden F2 win at Brands Hatch this afternoon (Saturday) after enduring race-long pressure from championship leader Andy Soucek.
Eng didn't make the best of starts off the line, but Soucek was unable to capitalise on the run down to Paddock Hill Bend. Henry Surtees and Kazim Vasiliauskas were side-by-side behind, and it was the Lithuanian who grabbed third on the opening lap.
Notable incidents in the early stages included Alex Brundle running through the gravel at Druids Hairpin on lap two and Jens Höing sliding off at Paddock Hill Bend. Brundle was able to continue, whilst Höing retired after making contact with the barriers.
After ten laps, the top three were separated by less than a second as Surtees fought to stay with the front-runners. Further back, Carlos Iaconelli and Sebastian Hohenthal were fighting for eighth, and Hohenthal made a stellar move down the inside of the Brazilian at Paddock. Unfortunately, Hohenthal's car began to slow before stopping on the edge of the circuit between Sheene Curve and Stirling's.
The stewards were left with little option but to deploy the safety car as Hohenthal's stricken car was retrieved. At the restart, and on cold tyres, Vasiliauskas ran wide into the first corner. Surtees accepted the invitation, as did Robert Wickens and both drivers nipped by the Lithuanian on the run up to Druids.
Iaconelli was still in the thick of the action, this time passing Miloš Pavlović around the outside for seventh position. Then Julien Jousse ran wide coming out of Surtees Corner, allowing Iaconelli to steal another place. Things got worse for Jousse - as the Frenchman tried to attack and repass Iaconelli, he out braked himself at Paddock Hill Bend and crashed out of the race.
Back at the front, Eng was still under intense pressure from Soucek, but the Austrian hung on to take the win by just 0.494s. "It is my first victory and it feels great," said Eng. "I was nervous as Andy put me under so much pressure. He was really quick in the back part of the circuit in the fast corners, but I managed to keep my position. The key now is consistency, definitely."
Soucek extended his lead at the top of the overall standings as his rivals faltered behind. "I tried to put Philipp under pressure but he resisted well," said Soucek. "I picked up some points over my main challengers, but it is still not enough. Tomorrow Robert Wickens is starting alongside me and it won't be easy."
Surtees kept Wickens at bay to claim his maiden podium in F2 - well deserved after the pace he has shown throughout the season. "It's a bit of a relief really," commented Surtees. "I only had two points before this race even though we've had a pole and we've set fastest laps in practice. It's nice to actually finish a race - in the last four I haven't quite been so lucky."
Vasiliauskas maintained fifth, ahead of the charging Iaconelli. Pavlović and Edoardo Piscopo rounded out the points - the Italian having recovered well from a poor start. Nicola De Marco was just half a second away from a points paying position in ninth, whilst Mikhail Aleshin stormed from the back of the grid to take tenth.
There were great battles throughout the field - Jolyon Palmer and Jack Clarke traded positions before Clarke went off and out of the race at Sheene Curve. Mirko Bortolotti also went out after going off at the same corner, whilst Alex Brundle and Armaan Ebrahim tangled at Clark Curve, both drivers retiring on the spot.

FIA Formula Two Championship statement
This release provides an update on the accident involving Henry Surtees in the Formula Two race at Brands Hatch on 19 July.
Henry was driving between Westfield and Sheene corner when he was struck on the head by a wheel and tyre from another car which had hit the tyre wall ahead of him just before. Henry was immediately knocked unconscious and his car failed to negotiate the following Sheene corner and collided with the barriers.
The race was red flagged and the medical team were with Henry as soon as possible. He was removed from the car, stabilised and taken to the medical centre where the medical team prepared him for transfer to the Royal London hospital, the regional trauma centre, by helicopter, where he is now being treated.
Formula Two Chief Executive, Jonathan Palmer, said "I would like to express my great sadness that Henry has been injured today. An accident like this would obviously raise high levels of concern and we await further news on Henry's condition from the hospital. This is clearly a very worrying time for John and Jane Surtees. Our thoughts are with them and we will be providing all the support we can."

Soucek claims victory in race two at Brands Hatch

Andy Soucek has taken victory in this afternoon's heavily-interrupted race two at Brands Hatch, extending his lead in the FIA Formula Two Championship.
The Spaniard made an excellent getaway from pole position, but Mikhail Aleshin made the most ground, moving up from fifth to third at the first corner. Robert Wickens maintained second in the early stages.
Behind them, a number of incidents on track and a brief rain shower on the opening lap led to a number of retirements and three separate red flag stoppages.
On lap two Kazim Vasiliauskas and Miloš Pavlović clashed heavily at Paddock Hill Bend, putting the Serbian out on the spot. Carlos Iaconelli also spun on the exit of Westfield, having risen from sixth to fourth after a good start.
The same lap Tobias Hegewald sneaked inside Henry Surtees at Druids for sixth, and the young Briton spun after getting two wheels on the grass as he tried to respond. Nicola De Marco also suffered damage as rain began to fall, and the race directors called a halt to proceedings as it threatened to turn into a wet race.
The circuit dried quickly though, and at the restart Soucek held off the initial advances of Wickens before the pair began to pull away from Aleshin in third. Jason Moore was enjoying his best run of the season in ninth, but behind him another incident occured when Sebastian Hohenthal tried to repass Jack Clarke for ninth - the Swede's efforts causing him to run wide into the gravel at the exit of Sheene Curve. As he returned to the circuit his car was clipped by Germán Sánchez, and the latter became airborne briefly before coming to a rest in the barriers
A safety car period followed, but the top eight all maintained position from the restart. On lap ten Jack Clarke went off at Westfield and made heavy contact with the barriers. A wheel from Clarke's car bounced across the circuit and appeared to make contact with the car of Henry Surtees, who then went off at the following corner. Yesterday's winner Philipp Eng brought his car home in fourth, whilst Mirko Bortolotti held off Tobias Hegewald to finish fifth. Behind the trio Edoardo Piscopo finished seventh, with Jason Moore taking his first point of the season with eighth place. Julien Jousse made up seven places from his starting position to finish ninth, and Armaan Ebrahim rounded out the top ten having started from 22nd on the grid.

Henry Surtees taken to hospital after lap ten incident
Andy Soucek has taken victory in this afternoon's heavily-interrupted race two at Brands Hatch, extending his lead in the FIA Formula Two Championship.
The Spaniard made an excellent getaway from pole position, but Mikhail Aleshin made the most ground, moving up from fifth to third at the first corner. Robert Wickens maintained second in the early stages.
Behind them, a number of incidents on track and a brief rain shower on the opening lap led to a number of retirements and three separate red flag stoppages.
On lap two Kazim Vasiliauskas and Miloš Pavlović clashed heavily at Paddock Hill Bend, putting the Serbian out on the spot. Carlos Iaconelli also spun on the exit of Westfield, having risen from sixth to fourth after a good start.
The same lap Tobias Hegewald sneaked inside Henry Surtees at Druids for sixth, and the young Briton spun after getting two wheels on the grass as he tried to respond. Nicola De Marco also suffered damage as rain began to fall, and the race directors called a halt to proceedings as it threatened to turn into a wet race.
The circuit dried quickly though, and at the restart Soucek held off the initial advances of Wickens before the pair began to pull away from Aleshin in third. Jason Moore was enjoying his best run of the season in ninth, but behind him another incident occured when Sebastian Hohenthal tried to repass Jack Clarke for ninth - the Swede's efforts causing him to run wide into the gravel at the exit of Sheene Curve. As he returned to the circuit his car was clipped by Germán Sánchez, and the latter became airborne briefly before coming to a rest in the barriers
A safety car period followed, but the top eight all maintained position from the restart. On lap ten Jack Clarke went off at Westfield and made heavy contact with the barriers. A wheel from Clarke's car bounced across the circuit and appeared to make contact with the car of Henry Surtees, who then went off at the following corner.
