Not sure I fully understand what you are saying here, but it looks like you have done it correctly.
I just tried swapping the Celica sound to the Evo 6 and I think it works ok. Unfortunately, on my sound system (not too flash), the two engine sounds are pretty similar, there are a few other environmental engine related sounds that are not fully carried across such as blow-off sounds, but I suspect these are controlled in other files such as Effects and Audio (also found under Richard Burns Rally/RSRBR/Sounds). I've not played around with those sounds between cars.
Just to be sure, here is the contents of my
