I had this same issue with GSCE v1.50 and the fix was to remove the d3d9.dll but when I try that with Automobilista I get a popup from steam that tells me the apps is already running. I put the d3d9.dll back and the game launched correctly.
My only workaround is when I escape to the garage and get the black screen is t o alt+tab to my desktop and then back to the game.
