Decided I'm going to start working a relatively simple skin.
2009 Superleague Formula Liverpool FC car

Not a particularly large fan of Liverpool FC, but something to get started with. Will be using Formula V10 as the basis
 
So I exported an unfinished version my my Superleague skin to see how it looked on the car. However, I got this instead of what I was expecting.
Any clue how to fix this? I've been using GIMP
I have noticed that the official skins have transparency to them when viewed with GIMP, whilst mine are completely opaque.

You need to edit the alpha channel: it is a second layer that controls the shine. Photoshop user too, but someone posted in the official Reiza forum this link to a Gimp tutorial. It seems pretty well done.
BTW, Adobe is giving away Photoshop CS2 for quite a while now: it is getting old but largely sufficient for skinning...
