PC2 A Frustrating Experience: The Project CARS 2 Review

Now I have to say something in advance of writing this review, I want Project CARS 2 to be good. I really, really do. Sim racing is my passion, and to have another big player on the scene vying for my game time is a very exciting prospect, and something which I found myself getting increasingly excited about on the run up to release last month.

Frankly I was sceptical after being bitterly disappointed by the original Project CARS game, so it came as something of a surprise when I gradually found myself being reeled in by the relentless marketing push for the new title throughout the build up to a public release, especially all the noise the developers were making about how the game would push the boundaries of realism and "redefine the genre of sim racing". These are all things that grab my attention, massively.

On face value many of the boxes one would like to see ticked prior to getting out on track have a resounding big fat happy smiley face next to them - loads of cars? Check. Loads of tracks? Check. VR support? Check. Dynamic weather and time of day? Check. These things are all good. These things give the game a massive leg up over the competition before a wheel has even been turned. Unfortunately turning said wheel is when things start to go a little bit wrong for Project CARS 2, and that is where the disappointment and frustration start to creep in to the experience, massively.

Now I'm no technical expert but I've been around a while, and mixing together my own experiences and using the help of our community and my good friend Mr. Google, after literally hours of tinkering and a download of the epic Jack Spade tweaker file later I managed to get a pretty decent setup going through my wheel (Fanatec CSW V2). This is a massive improvement over the original title, however you still have to work to damn hard to get under the skin of the game to find something half reasonable in the force feedback, which frankly is a shame and unnecessary. Why after all the discussion and criticism from the community levelled at the developers following the original PCARS release do we still have to download a community made file to get the FFB half decent is beyond me, and something that SMS should really consider as a bit of an own goal once all the initial fuss has died down following game release.

Now don't get me wrong, I still don't think I'm fully in the sweet spot for the force feedback despite my trials and tribulations getting things setup, and the rear of the car still feels too vague for me to confidently begin to push past the outer edge of performance, but in comparison to the original release the overall experience is much better and doesn't kill off the game before it even starts. Not at the level of the other sim racing titles out on the market today, but definitely a decent base from which to build upon.

So lets break down our impressions into a few key areas of the title:

UI - Vastly improved over the cluster of mess that was Project CARS. Looks neat, professional and functional. I find flicking through to the different menus easy and straight forward, but still keeping that stylish Project CARS feel and vibe. For me this is one of the most impressive improvements over the original game, and possibly the best UI of any of the sim racing titles currently available. Nice background music too and the bits of Ben Collins speaking about Senna are a nice touch, although these could maybe get a bit tiresome after a few hours of continual play.

Weather - Visually very impressive and aquaplaning is a thoroughly enjoyable extra dimension. Perhaps more grip than I would expect as my track experiences suggest more throttle steer and better modulation of the loud pedal out of corners would be needed than is currently simulated, however overall despite the limitations in some areas weather in PC2 is an area where the game stands out above its rivals. Some gripes I do have with it are when you get to the randomisation element of this feature, as basically selecting random weather means over 90% of the time you can expect some level of wetness, which is a shame as I would have liked to see more variety in the mix, such as dry running for a number of sessions then maybe a shower at the end of the race or something. Having tested almost 20 race weekends with random weather, I've had rain or snow during at least one session on every occasion...

Speaking of snow, lets be honest now, this is a gimmick and one that any serious sim racer will rarely use in a race setting. Strangely this cannot be removed from the weather randomiser, so you could get seriously annoyed when it pops up in a race weekend and spoils all the fun. This really does need to be addressed, as who wants to race GT3's at Brands Hatch in the snow anyway?

AI - A total and utter disaster. Period. How in the name of all that is sacred did this get past QA I will never know. The AI is simply awful. First corner crashes, no awareness and ridiculously slow wet driving are all regular occurrences that continually pop up to hurt the soul. One evening I endeavoured to do a race weekend at the Nurburgring in a Lamborghini GT3, a car and track combination I hadn't yet tried. At 105% difficulty with a default setup and no fuel removed I finished my 15 minute practice in P23, 1.6 seconds off the pace. This was good, I had some more pace to give in the limited time I had on track, but that is exactly where I wanted to be and I was a happy boy. Maybe another 3 tenths could've been won if I didn't keep crossing up in the chicane, but that was fine. Come my 10 minute qualifying and hey, random weather so time for rain. Ran two laps, put it on pole by 1.6 seconds. Parked it, remained on pole. Hmm.

Race day comes around and the rain has progressed to a thunderstorm (random weather rain strikes again). Get a good launch off the rolling start and by lap 3 I have 45 seconds of lead, without even pushing the car at all. ESC and back to menu. Little grey X button in the top right hand corner, shut down PC, walk away and mash a cup of tea. Not impressed. Sadly this is the case every time some rain falls, and let us be honest, I'm no Michael Schumacher in the rain. Something is wrong, very wrong indeed.

Car selection - Excellent. Some really nice cars and a lovely mix of the old and new are included, giving pretty much everyone the opportunity to have a go in something they might enjoy. All the big brands are present, so Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes or whatever takes your fancy can be fired up and raced around the many tracks in the game. A nice nod towards official series such as IndyCar are also welcomed, however the lack of real drivers despite the series licence and liveries grinds a bit, and kinda spoils it for me. Regardless of that little bugbear, you can't really fault the choice of cars in game, and all seem to be of solid quality and look wonderful from inside the cockpit using VR. Very happy.

Tracks - Again plenty to choose from, however for me the quality varies massively between different circuit selections. Some of them are just downright bad, both the visuals and accuracy, leaving a bit of a hit and miss feel to the whole game and giving one the impression that quite a few have been thrown in just to bump up the numbers, rather than striving to match the quality level expected of a game of this level.

Quality variances aside, it is nice to see that all the different weather options can be used on all the circuits, and that the game doesn't artificially limit what cars can be used on which circuit. Red Bull Ring in snow driving a WRX? No worries, the option is open for you to try. IndyCar at Knockhill? Go for it. Quite a cool thing to see and something I'm pleased about, if only for the novelty value of trying out weird combinations you would never see in real life.

Summary - Now I started writing this review very soon after the game released (about a week or so after) and I've parked it until now, half finished, as I wanted to give a bit of space for the developers to patch up some things and get it firing on all cylinders. We've had two patches so far, and still the AI is a joke. Wet weather is pointless against the computer opponents, and the dry weather awareness of where I am relative to the opposition is still poor. Not PCARS 1 bad, but for me at least still not close to the big hitters in the sim racing world. Over a month from launch day, I would expect this to be rectified and frankly I'm shocked it hasn't been addressed yet, making it very hard for me to want to invest any serious time in the sim. Assetto Corsa took a long time to get offline right, but that wasn't too much of a pain as the online stability was pretty rock solid, and more importantly the actual experience of driving the car was first rate, making hot lapping and just simply enjoying the driving experience of the different cars a pleasure, sadly for me at least PCARS 2 doesn't give the same level of driving thrill, it just feels canned and not really an "organic" driving experience. Open up your mind a little and AC or rF2 etc can feel like driving the real thing, PCARS 2 feels like a game. In my experience at least..

Moving to the online portion of the title is where my experience very dramatically drops off, as the events I've ventured into have all pretty much ended in various levels of frustration and disaster. Netcode has been poor at best, with plenty of lagging and cars floating or spawning at random all over the place. I suspect this has been improved since my last try, but frankly I've not got enough inclination to fire it up and have another bash, so this element of the sim will have to wait a while until further updates are released to entice me back to the game again.

Now I'm aware that my opinions are probably going to be quite polarising in the community and probably come across a bit harsh, this isn't intended and saddens me to write them. I really, really, really wanted this to be good, and honestly the basics are in place for a very solid racing game. What has probably caused me the biggest disappointment is how I fell for the hype once again, having been promised something that would blow me away and having eventually just sat through what was eventually a light breeze. It feels like I've been promised the best Ferrari in the world, and eventually had a top of the range Fiat Punto delivered. Nothing wrong with the Punto, actually its a rather nice car, but when one expected a brand new 700bhp Ferrari on the drive and looking out over a nearly new Punto just fills you full of disappointment at what could of been.

Project CARS 2 claimed to be "redefining the genre of sim racing" prior to release, and having sunk plenty of hours into getting under the skin of the new title I can say one thing for sure: despite having quite a few compelling positives if you look hard enough at the game, if this is the new definition of sim racing then I'm not entirely sure I want to stick around for much longer.

PC2 could be so much better if SMS had polished the game. But of course they didn't as they didn't with Project CARS 1, as they didn't with TDU Ferrari Legends and as they didn't with Shift 2U. Instead they used their money to muzzle an alt-right Canadian...
 
I Love the mature reviews without "fan boy thoughts" and a lot of experiences of virtual driving... and I dislike so much "fan boy thoughts" without maturity and respect for the "dinosaurs".

Fully agree! Well written! But the FF is fine with my T300 and T500 as others have already mentioned. I would also don't rate it as a simulator. IMHO, it's more a simcade. It took me a weekend to reach 1.18s in Spa with the 488 in AC and I was able to make it within 3 laps in pc2. And I am not an AC-fanboy! I have almost all racing games and play most of them on a regularly basis. Except pc2, because it has too many bugs right now. Mainly because of the unstable online part. But I am sure sms can fix all of that issues, as they have done it before with pc1. Maybe do a re-review in 6 months?
 
Wow the SMS attack dogs are strong on this one, I cant go through whole thread but has Ian rocked up yet?
What a vile stench that surrounds PCars franchise.
Some reviewer reviews a game and doesn't blindly do the hard sell as he's not been paid off and the rabid attack dogs come sniffing around...

I await this review being reversed once Ian steps in with either cash or threats or simply so much abuse from the fanboys...
I also await the Pretend race cars article slagging off RD.. good luck guys...
 
Not sure if I saw ovals mentioned in the article:

1. The front tires of the IndyCar appear as if they are not moving or just hanging there when you are going 200 mph. at Indy
2. You can't feel the track at all except for some resistance in the turns
3. The A.I. are so bad on ovals it's as if they didn't test them
4. When you try to hotlap with no A.I. in SP @ Indy, your tires go to 400 degrees after 3 laps in every scenario, in every car (that I have tried).

And these are only the worst...

So, they "faked it" with ovals (after all, why make money attracting a whole new fan base?). Same with Daytona and Texas which are also afterthoughts and unplayable in any form. (remember, Multiplayer does not work on the console). That's why, at core, Microsoft (or the retailer) will refund you instantly. It's a defective product.
 
Everybody got valid points both in pro’s and con’s areas. My view on this - and maybe why the reviews differs so very much - is that a part of the reviewing community probably had received incentives with their copy to review. I don’t know if this is true with the major reviews of PC2, but it is a fairly standard practice. And not only in the game industry. And with incentives involved, the tendency is always to portrait a title a little more positive than maybe truly deserved. In the case of a paid review it’s likely to get worse. You don’t bite the hand that feeds you. It takes away critisism. And in the end I think paid reviews is always killing for a product if isn’t up to expectations for the general public.

Great reallife example in the Netherlands is Autoweek (Dutch car magazine). They will always be positive about VAG manufactured cars and tend to give them the best scores. In their community, that’s always a gripe because on many points positives aren’t truly valid, as well as the con’s on the competitors cars aren’t always valid. And the discussion is always whether PON (imports VAG cars in the Netherlands) is the most important advertiser of the magazine. The outcome is an eternal endless discussion about the topic.

And in case of PC2 with the bombastic announcements at various times, expectations are build up and eventually gets to high wen it’s to hyped up. And with many left dissapointed with PC1, it is fairly logic for them to see mainly the con’s of PC2.

I see it this way, PC1 brought me back in sim racing after almost 20 years. When I explored other race games, I became aware of PC1’s gripes. The bigger joy I got from R3E, rFactor 2 and later AC, the lesser enjoyable the PC1 experience became. To me it became a disinctive and recognizable object to the sub genre of simcade. And with that in mind, I could still enjoy an occasional drive in PC1. And it is only about a year ago this happened.

And when compared to other titles, no title is free from it’s peculiarities and gripes. That’s why we all tends to love one title over another. And I sure do understand @Paul Jeffrey opinion. And let’s face it, many oddities of PC2 (which were already present in PC1, such as the inconsistencies in cars and track quality and drops in performance for no reason on certain tracks) could and should have been fixed at release state of PC2. And the differences in development of the console versions are imho pretty bad for such a (relative) big budget title. That’s for the negative part.

On the other hand, so much what’s gone wrong with PC1 is fixed in PC2. Like for example FFB is way better (though maybe still not perfect, but very doable), the physics are way better, the dynamic tracksurface changes are very interesting etc. And with all that in mind, for me it became a proper sim which I enjoy once in a while.

And I think a title as PC2 is way more likely to get someone interested to get more involved with sim racing than Gran Turismo or Forza.

And in the end one thing is always undeniably true... They are all just games which tries to mimic racing. Nothing more, nothing less... :thumbsup:

Couldn't agree more with you summing up of the AI, also found they don't race each other in the career races I've done and when you battle to get past them they just give up and never try to overtake you again for the whole race.

Did a very polite post on the SMS forum pointing this out but my post just got deleted.

Unfortunately going by this post from "Mr bell" today on the SMS forum....

"I will say though that I think our AI is close to the best out there already. Some issues yes, but 'some issues' exist in reality and we're emulating reality."

there isn't much wrong with the AI....is he deluded or what

I just don't get it. The games been out for a mere month and people are complaining. I mean the say what do you expect when games are not properly tested or beta tested. There is no such thing as beta testers only guinea pigs and that's what we are for any gaming company these days. All I read is AC this AC that. I can only imagine when AC was released a thread such as this one would be pretty much read the same. Complain complain without giving it a chance.

I get the impression some people just want the Sims to be all the same well that's simply impossible and should be accepted, as so. As you can't base one on another. In this case due to time difference in development period.

I simply get the impression some of you think this game, Project Cars 2 is crap. So I say on to you was AC crap when it first came out. I can probably safely say it was, but is it now, no it is one of the finest because it's had time to develop. Which I am willing and prepared to give Project Cars 2 time to develop as we all should. You've done it with other titles and stuck it out why not this one. And the most ridiculous things I've read, people not even bothered the play the game because of the judgement of others. I can understand holding off for a while until some issues are fixed but saying I won't be bothered buying this at all is just ridiculous.

The hype has bloated the expectations and there's always going to be disappointment no matter what.
I personally come from an F1 game background for more than 10 years but gave up on 2016 one of the worst issues I've ever played and was told by Codemasters some of the issues like drifting was unfixable.
So I came to race department and started playing raceroom experience I thought to myself wow this is different also thinking there is something seriously wrong with this game and several months later I realised this just a different game what do I expect but I gave it the chance and now I consider it one of the best, but still odd in some areas. Unfortunately the company is more concerned with profit, before quality. As still some of the cars are undriveable after God knows how long and are more concerned about pumping out more content instead of fixing what they already have. But this is common amongst gaming manufacturers nowadays. But I stick with it all the same with the faith things will improve. As I do with all games I play. I have to, we all have to, what choice do we have, play no games at all.

All I'm saying guys and girls, give the game a chance giving up and condemning it so soon you are not being fair to the game or or yourself for that measure. Be your own judge don't be told by others, what you should be thinking of this game.
Like I said I haven't even got this game but I am going to get it in the expectations that problems will be dealt with. Then and only then if this is not for filled I can safely say never never again.
 
Thanks for the honest and good review @Paul Jeffrey, I have pCars2 on my Wish List but your review (amongst others) only further cements the need to wait for it to become a Sale item and then question whether I really want to buy it anyway.

I'm already fulfilling my racing time with RF2 & AC and they are more than enough at this moment in time so theres not really any room for another Sim, especially one that claims to "redefine the genre of sim racing" which I find big headed and a bold statement when quite clearly it doesn't do that at all. Finally I spend a lot of my time racing AI and again yours and others perceptions of the AI mean this game is a massive turn off.
 
Just a few words about the AI in simulations or mixed simulation/arcade... and I think It will be a good post for developping it.

I NEVER encountered a good one... just a simply good with recent games !

I play a lot on AC (I'm not playing online and in a league) so, when I'm not for hotlaping, I challenge against AI in the several challenges and It's purely catastrophic in ALL levels !
You are a sort of "ghost", AI are completely mad or in a "kamikaze style"... a huge frustration and billions of neurones killed in my poor brain !
Continuing challenging against AI will be made a dummy of me !

I don't want to be polemic (not my things !), It's just a thought about AI in recent games and particulary Assetto Corsa !
I really don't understand why It seems worse and worse in this simulation after many updates !?
 

Even if PC2 had a crowd funding part, which I am still uncertain it did, that does not automatically mean that you endorse the game as an “funder”.

I was an original PC crowd funder and I did not like the game during development and was disappointed when released - hardly playing it.

Actually the only positive for a long time was the dividend - not sure, but I’d guess the total return was probably 200% maybe a little bit more. The latest payout this year covered most of the PC2 price. The crowd funding was very modest, normal game price iirc could get you in, and instead of the regular early access scheme we got something in return. There were bigger investments possible, but if you think that this will influence reviews you have to look at the gaming industry in general as well and accept that there are many bigger players involved than a few crowd funders.

Back to topic I had a negative Steam review on PC, which I removed only some months ago because it was no longer relevant and in the mean time PC had changed for the better.

I think it was a very fair review by Paul, besides the many bugs it's been released with again, what's more frustrating and disappointing is the fact some of the many bugs that existed in PC1 still exist in PC2..very bad quality control.

You need to play the game first before defending it and as it's a continuation of project cars 1 it's had plenty of development time, probably more than AC and it's still a mess with most aspects of the game barely working as intended

It was perhaps a poor sense of late night humour linking to the "trick or treat" line I used.

Bit of fun is all.
However, it seems apparent a lot of the community will not trust this developer again.

FFB was easy to set up for me and feels good. Not quite Automobilista or RF2 good, but good. Of course different wheels and expectations might be driving that different experience but I do think it is much, much easier to adjust this time. Some cars feel much better than others... kind of like the track quality differences mentioned in the review. The poor cars are really not very good. The best cars though, in my experience, are competitive in handling feel with quality cars in other pc sims.
 
I've got over 100 hours in PCars 2, is it perfect? no far from it.

For me the question I ask is 'is it fun?' and yes, for me it's a good deal of fun! Much more so than AC at the moment which I also have 100 hours in on PC with all DLC and about the same on xBone.

I found the FFB to be good to excellent in PC2 once I turned down the settings on Informative mode on my TX wheel (100/40/30/30 from memory) and the handling improved drastically once I turned the assists from Authentic to Off. In the dry I get some amazing races with the AI around 100% difficulty 50% aggression but in the wet I need to increase to 120% and they're still off the pace, and no where near as good as R3E AI for example.

After all, all that matters is the fun element of each game we choose to play. Yes RF2 has better physics and FFB but there's not a great deal to do in it offline (in the base game). Same for R3E, I love it and it's probably one of my favourites but offline it becomes stale quickly, AC has poor AI and can be very frustrating for me at the best of times but I play them all and have fun in them all, when it stops being enjoyable I fire up something else for a bit.

We all have opinions on the games we play but at the end of the day you do what you enjoy, otherwise there's no point.
 
So your ONLY complain (talking about opening post) would be AI !?
Well... that somehow doesn't convince me.
AI behavior has actually changed from first release of the game and I believe they will improve it in further patches, so... all the whining is pointless.

From my side - I really enjoy the game.
Maybe it's up to someone's expectation level, dunno... but I know one thing, when I started my first session, free practice, IndyCar, Long Beach... I literally drop my jaw how amazing (can't say enough how much it all remind reminds me on real indy race, replay especially) everything looks. Oh God, I was in love already. :inlove::inlove: And also feel convincing enough. I have G27. No AI there so I couldn't whine yet there you know... :)
Later, in some races, I got no significant problems with AI (wow, how's that?) but I've noticed another interesting thing.... PC2 is so much better optimized compared to PC one !?! And they scared me with their minimum/recommended specs ! Hell... everything is just flying on my quite middle aged pc, I couldn't believe it. Sliders ALMOST ALL to right ! :confused:

You can say whatever you want but for now... I'll just enjoy my time in PC 2. They have done a great job this time in my humble opinion.
This game reminds me of F1 2017 in a way. With insanely more content ! :D

Fun. Fun. Fun. While look amazing. And performed beautifully. That would be my "shortest review ever". :geek:
