2012 McLaren MP4-27

Sky Sports News:

Oliver Turvey will be the first McLaren driver to get behind the wheel of the MP4-27 - he'll be giving the team's new charger a shakedown at Jerez next week.

Will this be on the 7th? Or can they drive it beforehand?

A shakedown is not a test, they can also do some aero-tests. I know Williams are doing one aero-test before the first test.

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has admitted that the exhausts seen on the MP4-27 during its launch in Woking last week, were in fact fake outlets.
Teams often disguise parts of their cars by moulding fake parts from plastic, rather than carbon fibre, in an attempt to confuse their rivals or hide unique innovations.
Whitmarsh admitted that the rather odd looking exhaust exits on the MP4-27, which jut out beyond the bodywork, weren't what would be seen during testing.

"The exhaust was made of plastic, you won't see those components in that form again," he told Auto Motor und Sport.
"The car will look different at Jerez to what it looked last week, and a lot different in Australia."
During the cars shake down at the weekend, in which Oliver Turvey was behind the wheel, Whitmarsh also admitted that they tested a series of new, unseen parts.
"At the weekend at Idiada we did an aero test where we had a series of news parts that were not on the car at Woking."

Martin Whitmarsh admits the MP4-27 launched in Woking last week will not be the car that McLaren take to the Australian GP.

McLaren unveiled their 2012 challenger last Friday with several parts of the car well covered, notable the exhaust exits.

And with F1 banning blown exhaust diffusers this season, how teams will make up for the lost downforce is one of the hot topics.

McLaren, though, are keeping their secrets well hidden - at least for now.
"Our exhaust was made of plastic, you will never see these components in this form again,"
Whitmarsh admitted to Auto Moto und Sport.


"The new car will not look the same in Jerez and in the season opener in Australia it will look very different.
"We spent the week in Idiada (Spain) doing an aero test on a series of new parts for the car that were on it in Woking."

That thing looks pretty naughty. Seems like they are circumventing the specification of the last part of the exhausts by encasing it in bodywork which is not subject to the regulation. But that makes it pretty obvious that the exhaust gases are used for aerodynamic purposes, which they might get in trouble for. No wonder Whitmarsh said they are getting ready to "fight" for their new car.

Yea it's a very clever interpretation of the rules :)
Fully legal according to the rule book as there is nothing ahead of the exhaust to deflect the gases.
And they have one "side" of the exhaust clear of bodywork.

I think some teams are a bit grumpy as they agreed not to exploit the exhausts :)
Same with holes in bodywork but then Mclaren popped out with the F-duct.

All legal though hehe,
