Tomorrow will see McLaren launch their 2012 workhorse, but amid the excitement, the Woking-based squad are also expecting some backlash from rivals with regards the legality of some of the car's design features.

The team, who are notorious for holding back on technical innovations through fear of breaching regulations, usually have a poor start to a season as a result of being conservative. However, Geoff McGrath, McLaren Applied Technologies MD, told Autosport that it's all change this year.

"We've started way behind in the last couple of years — that's the really disappointing thing," he said. "But when we're behind, you can see that historically we always catch up faster than anyone else.

"Until we go to Jerez (7th February), the engineers won't know for sure if they got it right. There are technical innovations on the car which will be immediately obvious when you see them."

McGrath admitted that the team, headed by Martin Whitmarsh, are "getting ready for a fight over the MP4-27."
In another complete change of direction, it has been rumored that McLaren will be looking to dominate over single-lap pace, allowing the team to control a race from the front rather than their more reserved race-pace attitude of recent years.

The MP4-27 is due to be launched tomorrow, 1st February
