1980 Spanish Grand Prix

It's the last race before the mid-season cut-off for points and pre-qualifying. Alan Jones is still leading the championship but Arrows's Jacques Laffite has been closing on him rapidly following the Frenchman's victories in the previous two races. Both are, however, already in a position where only a win (Jones) or a podium finish (Laffite) will add to their points total. No other driver is in danger of "losing" points.

In the WCC, there are 11 teams that have scored points already this season and thus are in a strong position of avoinding pre-qualifying in the second half of the season. Brabham has already secured their place in the top-12 but Ensign's place is still very much in doubt. Jean-Pierre Jabouille's 8th place in Brazil has so far kept them in front of Ligier (best finish of 9th), Rebaque (10th), Wolf (11th), ATS and Osella (not classified). Which team will take the ever so important 12th place?

Pre-qualifying

The most important pre-qualifying of the season so far. It's the last chance to aid your team in the pursuit out of this misery for the second half of the season. Jabouille responded well with a strong second position for Ensign but unfortunately his teammate let him down once again. Rahal's time was not enough by some tenths of a second and so Wolf and Brabham advanced once again.

Qualifying
Ferrari has so far this season been on pole on every occasion but this weekend it was the in-form Jacques Laffite who drove the fastest lap in qualifying, beating the the Ferrari duo by mere thousands and hundreths of a second. McLarens followed in 4th and 5th following Mansell's return to speed. Lauda was a surprise sixth in the bright yellow Fittipaldi.

Williams drivers were in row 4, de Angelis again the faster of the two. Top-10 was completed by teammate of the pole sitter Binder and Villeneuve who thrashed teammate Arnoux by almost a second. Arnoux was in 20th. Between them were Shadows, Tyrrells, Lotuses and an odd Brabham and Ligier. Disqualified from the race were Wolf's Ricardo Zunino (3rd time in a row) and Team Rebaque's main investor Hector Rebaque (5th time in a row)

Race
Top drivers got away good as Laffite retained his lead. Jones passed his teammate for second and Rosberg for fourth. Lauda got up to 5th coming in to the first corner but made contact with another car, presumably with Mansell, and had to retire. In the back was some action too as Prost, Tambay and Hunt spun or crashed out too. By the end of first lap the running order was Laffite, Jones, Rosberg, Reutemann, de Angelis and Mansell. Binder had gone past Piquet. Villeneuve, Tyrrells and Ickx followed them closely. Patrese in the second Brabham got a ice start aswell, he was up to 17th.

After a few laps it was evident that overtaking was going to be difficult today. First major change happened on lap 14 after Jones made a slight error and dropped down to 14th. This meant Laffite was now leading all by himself as Rosberg hadn't been able to match the leading pair's pace. With a win Laffite would also take the championship lead so Jones' mistake was even more crucial.

De Angelis had been collecting a pack behind him for some laps and on lap 20 the reason became clear as his Cosworth engine lost all the remaining power. Few laps later drivers headed to pits. Biggest loser of the cycle was Binder who got caught behind Patrese after making a stop. This allowed Scheckter to close rapidly and make an easy overtake. Moments later Binder was in the walls with the back of his car up in flames - oil leak was the official reason for retirement.

In the midpoint of the race Laffite was leading by 17 seconds over Rosberg who in turn was leading Piquet by 22 seconds. Scheckter and Pironi had somehow gained a lot of speed and were in 4th and 5th ahead of the Ferraris after Mansell's Cosworth had blown up. Mass, Ickx and Patrese were also in top-10 but way back.

Some drivers stopped for a second time and with some 20 laps remaining the pack was shuffled again. Laffite and Rosberg were safe and in 3rd was Pironi who had only stopped once! Piquet, Jones and Scheckter were someway behind but closing steadily. Reutemann had tried to stretch his pit stops and got held up badly. He was out of the points. This was the finishing order as well and so Arrows' Jacques Laffite took his third win in a row and the championship lead after seven races!

e. MID-SEASON CUT-OFF REVIEW WILL FOLLOW

Fantastic from Keke, a very well driven race and securing us some well needed points. We'll see where we'll go from this, but it's a great result and right now we're going to celebrate it

YES Jacques, 3 in a row! Plus first non-Ferrari pole

Perhaps I should no longer be so suprised about these :D But we need to sort out our reliability issues that seem to be plaguing Binder's car, hopefully they don't get to Jacques too.

our pace seems strong, and I think 2nd is possible in the constructors' championship, maybe even 1st with some luck. For the drivers, I really hope Jacques can get us numbers 1-2 :D

Another finish but THAT'S NOT ENOUGH FROM US!

should've gone with Ford in 1979, just 200$ more expencive and much better. Ligier was already a top team in those days
I would choose that, but Matra was something the French team would mostly be "interested" in, and I would think it would be reliable enough back in 1979.
