1979 South African Grand Prix

Pre-qualifying
Pre-qualifying on the short Kyalami circuit proved to be the tightest we've seen yet this season. Ensign's Alberto Colombo was surprisingly the fastest man, just beating Clay Regazzoni and Jochen Mass. Colombo's fastest time also marked the first time Ensign progressed to qualifying, although his teammate Jabouille was a little off the pace. Team Rebaque was the team sent packing.

Qualifying

Kyalami Circuit, located some 1800 metres above sea level was bound to favour Renaults and their turbo engines. It was Ferrari however that once again took the pole position, this time in the hands of Alan Jones. Villeneuve was second, Reutemann third and Pironi fourth ahead of the second turbo-engined Renault of Arnoux. McLarens were in promising pace, Rosberg taking sixth ahead of teammate Fittipaldi and Scheckter in the other Tyrrell. Cheever and Takahara were slight surprises in the top-10.

Race
Race day was extremely hot and so the race would be very demanding on the cars and drivers. First few laps were completed without problems. Scheckter's passes on both McLarens were the highlights of the race start. After five laps Jones was leading and Villeneuve was hot on his heels. Championship leader Reutemann was third and behind him Arnoux in a Tyrrell sandwich.

However, the Frenchman's race came to an end quickly when his left rear tyre punctured. Soon after we saw the first engine blow up when another Frenchman, Jabouille had to retire on his début of the season.

After ten laps Villeneuve had taken the lead from Jones. Reutemann was struggling too in the hot conditions - he was passed by Pironi, who unfortunately had to retire shortly after. First round of pit stops saw more high-profile retirees as Emerson Fittipaldi made contact with Jacky Ickx after making his stop.

At the half point of the 78 lap race Villeneuve was leading and following him were Reutemann, Scheckter, Rosberg, Cheever and Patrese. Jones had had a brief off-track moment and was in seventh ahead of Lauda and de Villota. Then, in a matter of minutes Scheckter, who was having a solid home GP and both Ferraris pulled to the side of the track after encountering technical issues.

For the rest of the race it was clear the attrition rate would be very high. Arrows' Emiliano de Villota was perhaps the driver who benefited from this the most. He visited second briefly some 15 laps before the finish but wasn't able to keep Rosberg and Lauda behind. His hopes of podium finish were looking very slim until the race leader's turbo broke down. Villeneuve had lead most of the race and was looking to cruise to victory.

After Villeneuve's retirement there were only six cars left in the race which meant every finisher would get points. All six did finish and it was McLaren's Keke Rosberg who came out on top and took the first F1 championship win of his career. Niki Lauda was second ahead of de Villota who got Arrows a marvellous podium finish. Renzo Zorzi added to Arrows' great day by finishing sixth. Elio de Angelis and James Hunt had quiet races but were able to cap them with points finishes.

An extremely unfortunate weekend for us. Both Didier and Jody showed a promising pace, but once again the rather poor reliability of our car prevented them from converting it in results.

Super effort from Keke here today. We're really happy with the current work being done on the car, this proves we have a good base to work on, and we're hoping to continue this work over the season. Because we feel that while this was great, we're not a guaranteed front runner just yet, so we'll work towards that.

7 cars finished, it's like the real-life 1996 Monaco GP :p

More like it reflects the actual situation of that time. Loads of retirements was the order of the day back then. From time to time I like watching some of the old races, seeing drama for the leaders and backmarkers sneaking up points :D. Kind of miss that ever since the reliability improved in the early 2000s.

Monaco1982 ftw :D

In real life 1979 season 3/15 races had seven or less finishers. So nothing extra-ordinary really here :whistling:

I'd like to stress one thing here to make it absolutely clear: I don't actually watch the races so some things described in the race commentary might not have happened exactly the same way in the actual simulation.

1979 United States Grand Prix

Pre-qualifying
The Long Beach street circuit in California hosted the fourth round of the 1979 F1 season. The weekend began once again with the pre-qualifying session. Perhaps surprisingly it was Team Rebaque that controlled the session. Jochen Mass has shown this season promising pace in patches and this time team he was backed by team owner Héctor Rebaque who was second fastest. Alfa Romeo's Clay Regazzoni was third fastest but unfortunately his Austrian team-mate Ertl couldn't match his pace. It was the first time Alfa Romeo couldn't advance from pre-qualifying.

Qualifying

Back from the high altitudes of Kyalami to the seaside, Renaults weren't tipped to do as well as in South Africa. Drivers Gilles Villeneuve and René Arnoux were to prove this wrong though. Villeneuve took the pole ending Ferrari's three race streak. Tyrrell's Jody Scheckter was in surprisingly good pace too pushing the Ferraris completely out of the front row. Reutemann and Jones were to end the qualifying in 3rd and 5th, Arnoux in between them.
Niki Lauda showed once again the potential of the Copersucar-Fittipaldi chassis, rounding out the top-6. Williams had clearly found a great setup for this track as both of their drivers managed to get into the top-10 for the first time. Emilio de Villota continued his great form and was 10th fastest.
Largest disappointments were Didier Pironi (16th) and the McLarens. Fittipaldi managed 13th and the winner of Kyalami, Rosberg, only 17th fastest time.

Race
After a somewhat chaotic South African GP, many expected to see a race of high attrition on the tight street circuit as well. However, this was not how the race panned out afterall.

Start was clean. Only Jabouille in the lone Ensign stalled to the grid and had to retire. In front Arnoux was the man to take the best start. After a marvellous first lap he would actually lead the race while his polesitter team-mate Villeneuve declined to fourth. Scheckter and Reutemann kept their positions in 2nd and 3rd.

Arnoux spun on the 10th lap and dropped out of the top-10. Lauda hadn't had a particularly good race and it wasn't going to change: his Cosworth engine blew up in a spectacular fashion. After Arnoux' error Scheckter inherited the lead. Reutemann had a slow pit stop and dropped out of points. Jones took his place in second. Villeneuve followed closely in third. Piquet, de Villota and Rosberg, who was having a killer race, were the other drivers on points.

Derek Daly had had a slow start to the race but was improving quickly. Gradually overtaking driver after driver he was fourth when 50 laps were completed. Soo after he too ran into problems and retired. Rosberg had also lost time after making a mistake which allowed Reutemann to sneak back into top-6.

From there on the gaps stabilized and it was Tyrrell's Jody Scheckter who crossed the finish line first. Alan Jones was second and took his first points of the season. Villeneuve was third ahead of Piquet and Reutemann, who will surely be happy to come away with two points after his problems. The hero of the previous race, Emilio de Villota continued his wonderful form taking home the last point after succesfully holding back Elio de Angelis. Rosberg and Arnoux recovered to 8th and 9th. Race winner Scheckter's team-mate Pironi had a quiet race and finished 10th.

Points again! And this race was even normal! However, I can proudly say the A2 (new chassis) will make its first appearance at the next weekend. We are hoping it is an improvement over the A1.

Superb performance from Jody throughout the whole weekend. Taking the teams first win this season, thus promoting us to 2nd in the constructors' championship. Didier struggled with to find a decent setup, after the messed up quali it was pretty clear that points wouldn't be possible today. Also important to note that finally both cars made it to the finish.

I will honestly say that so far the season is not to the level of what we were expecting, however we are happy to receive the new V12 from Alfa next race. We are confident that their engine will help us improve.

Shame for us today, after our win in South Africa we really wanted to build upon that. While in terms of points we were unable to do so, getting two cars to the end of the race is a great success, that is something that has let us down a little bit.
We'll be looking to return to the points next round.

Disappointing for Ligier, we will hope for a better result in the next race.
